Another idea, since he's apparently fresh out of them, would be to take a year off not to study repackaged bronze age myths, but musical composition. The man clearly has a gift that's beyond mere pop music which makes it a pity that he can't read/write music. If he took the time to actually study composition, just imagine all the musical ideas he could explore. I suppose I'm echoing and adding to the sentiment someone had about him just releasing instrumentals, because by god, how did the man who wrote The Ballad of Dorothy Parker write a song about summer called Hot Summer which is about, you know, it being nice and hot in the summer? I just don't see the lyrical muse returning. I have no interest in his personal life, the man has a right to his privacy and to live his life however he sees fit, but the turn to JW undoubtedly has limited his lyrical scope and maybe if he stops trying to write a rock song that doesn't conflict with his faith, he can focus more intently on the music. Which takes us back to my first sentence.

No hard feelings.

This song reminds me of a combination of So Far, So Pleased and Cream..

It's a solid, fun pop song that really has a catchyness to it! I like it

yeahthat Throw in some beach boys sound and early Prince keyboards. Good pop song though.

Anyhow let's keep it real every orger with computer skills is downloading this track right now whether they love it or hate it.

Noooo, no no no. Honestly. I have no desire to do so. Nor did I download Cause & Affect, or the few tracks offered through the Lotusflow3r website. Truthfully, I don't think they're good enough to bother with. I'll just wait and pick up the new album when/if it's released so I can check out a handful of new tunes at once. If these tracks aren't on the album, then maybe I'll hunt them down.

I get your point, though. And I'm sure a lot of people are doing so. But I don't think the loyalty of his fanbase is quiet as crazed about the recent new material as we were back in the day (or even a few years ago).

In regards to what you said about the "Vault", which I actually meant to quote. I am still interested in getting batches of those songs properly mixed, mastered and released to us with the mans blessing. They will sound different than we've ever heard them before if that's done properly.

That's the only thing to get from a proper Vault release is better sound quality to songs that are 20-30 years old.

I saw downloads for 'Purple & Gold' and for 'Cause & Effect' on a well known site for orgers and they both had been dl'ed more than once. Most of us are completists and don't be fooled by anyone on here telling you otherwise. Even the "crappy audience recorded boots" get dl'ed by us. We want it all but some of us don't have the balls to come out and say it. There are a lot of "Sound Quality" elitists on here who still ran out and copped the Black Album on a homemade cassette back in 87-88 because they had to have it.

I hope Prince doesn't release another CD and decides to just record for himself and for his own personal enjoyment because if the masses around here are an indication then he was right "The Divine" is too good for us.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

It's a fun, happy pop song. Nothing more. Not bad, but I can't see myself being excited about it after a handfull of listens. Sounds like it came from the same braincell as "The Morning After" and "Shake!".

I'd be disapointed if this were an album track, but I'll accept it for what it is - a freebie streamed on the radio. Thanks Prince and happy birthday!

There are TONS of songs that are not circulating.

I agree, forget the mythical "Vault(TM)" crap, that's it's housing some hidden fountain of A+ tracks and all that shit, but it's documented fact that there are hundreds of widely uncirculating songs/alt. versions (documented as in they are named, have recording sessions, have been heard, etc, not just that someone said there are hundreds of tracks).

Is there no one at your station who listened to this track and said "guys, I think he's punking us?"

I'm sorry, but I'm supposed to believe that you and him talked about new music (which includes the ridiculously overrated Janelle Monáe) and then this is the track he hands you guys? And you actually play it on your station?

Why wouldn't someone at the station have been able to talk to Prince? As if Prince has never spoken to a radio station person before, or a journalist, or a program director? It's a nonsensical question, and should be considered rhetorical.

I'm not disputing they talked. I'm disputing they talked about music and Prince made any sense, since he's given them two tracks that are nowhere near good.

It's not a bad song. It's just a pop song, nothing more. It's the same vein as "Cream" or "Guitar", etc.

It's shit. It's not C&A-level shit, it's just shit. It's lazy, and that makes it shit.

No one's yet confirmed it's Janelle on it, but it'd be nice if it was her. She's not overrated, but she is a lot more original than 95% of the shit out there right now in R&B and Soul.

Being better than other music that's shit doesn't mean much. I've heard her album.

No one is punking anyone.

Prince is. Because if he cares about The Current and listens to them, he wouldn't hand them these tracks. If only to save his own reputation.

I'm sure you already figured this out, but it's obvious the station is grateful for exclusively tracks from a name like Prince that it really doesn't matter what the quality of the material is like.

Listen to it a few times now, fiddled with the equalizer the lot, its still sounds so flat and dated, just a big yawn fest, wheres the funk? wheres the grooveness? and Shelbeys voice is not being used to its full potential she has a fantastic voice, but on it she sounds like a drowning cat.

What a waste of an idea.

Some of the melody, especially near the chorus, reminds me of Beck's "Sexxx Laws" (which, strangely, was influenced by Prince).

My first thought was that apart from the annoying female vocals, the intro sounded very similiar to Cinnamon Girl.I can hear how people are hearing the Guitar demo in there.

The whole song sounds like a demo to me.

After a few more listens it's not as bad as when I first heard it but I dont really like it.

However Im grateful that Prince shared it with us.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

my fave words from the lyrics are "futuristical" and "shoo-be-doo-ee" lol Seriously though, I've listened to it a few times now (in the car and currently on my ipod) and it really has grown on me. It's a cheerful pop-rock ditty nothing more nothing less. I wish it did go into a killer guitar solo around the 1:50 mark though. He nearly goes into it then, nothing. Little tease... cool

What a waste of an idea.

I feel bad saying all that and it was a bit harsh, its a Prince tune some, we all aren't gonna like everything he does and hes still alive making and releasing music, i suppose we should be grafeful for small mercies.

I will have to give it a few more listens.

To be fair on the same album as "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" he had a song about starfish and coffee/maple syrup and jam/butterscotch clouds tangerines/and a side order of ham.

A one-off track to a radio station. It's probably not (or at least I hope it's not) the lead song to a new album, or even ON a new album. Bland and repetitive, but it does have a feel-good quality to it. I listened to it once, and that was more than enough. Bring on new music that really rocks. Or funks. Or pops.

Play this on the radio in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Austria and two things are bound to happen:

(a) many who bought tickets will read the fine print to see if they can get refunds

(b) casual fans won't bother buying tickets at all

Anybody else think Prince is killing his career extremely quickly?!

The past 3 released singles have been shocking to say the least.... Just remember this is a guy who created Purple rain, Around the world in a day, sign o' the times, lovesexy..Etc etc... and Now purple and gold, cause and effect and now this piece of shite.... And I thought the 90's were bad!!
