errant said: he's funky, but he is (or was) the next generation of funk. he took it away from the fat juicy slap bass lines, etc., and turned it glam and new wave in the early 80's. which was great. and makes it more disappointing that he's hooked up with people like Larry and Maceo who were at the foundation of the funk that came before him. he's very proficient at that style of funk and I'm sure there's a certain thrill with performing the kind of music he grew up on with his childhood heroes. but it kind of goes against the grain of the entire point of Prince as a funk revolutionary. he had such a spare, dry funk thing going on, and in some ways he traded it in to retread and pay homage to the past.
just my take on it.... The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

The funk left him over 20 years ago - I'd say the Black Album was the last of it. Lovesexy - not funky. Graffiti Bridge, Diamonds and Pearls - not funky. Etc etc.
It's okay, he had his 1999, his Purple Rain. Then he grew up. That's just how it goes.

His beats don't slam in the same way. These other chicken grease artists throw more on the grill. Prince is more coldly funky. His songwriting is more of a force than his actual funkyness. This is why It seems crazy to continue to mewl about him staying funky when he is rarely that funky anyhoo. I mean I was at an event and the DJ played Kiss. It sounded good, like it always does, but few people were dancing or shaking their groove thangs. Than he put on Atomic Dog and the house blew up. Kiss is funky but not Atomic Dog funky. My only point. Then they played Cha Cha Slide, a song I can't seem to escape. You had this huge line dance. Everybody was dancing, acting crazy. That song is lame, at least to me, but look at the reaction. Prince is funky but not funky in the way most people like. Prince uses third parties to express his funkiness. Think Morris James and the Time, Jermaine Johnson etc. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Perhaps he himself didn't perform direct funk as he didn't want to be typecast and wanted to appeal to a larger audience. So he used cartharsis'. Feel U Up. DMSR. Kiss. Housequake. Shockadelica. Funky! Sorry, but those songs that you mentioned were not that funky. But Nasty Girl by Vanity 6, and 7779311 were just about as funky as you could get. And he made both groups sing the songs by wrote, they werent even allowed to ad lib. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Prince is funky.
But whenever he does a funk album, people say they want a rock album, whenever he does a ... He tried both on MPLSsound, but I slowed the pace a bit with the ballads (which were still beautiful IMO). Anyone who thinks 'Old Skool Company' isn't funky is errrrr ... unfunky.

He's a pop/rock guy, and he's good at that. Prince got his start out opening for the funk master himself....Rick James. And he is obsessed with Larry Graham the most funkiest bass player ever. He channels his funk into the artists he produces. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

To piggy back on what some of u have said, I think P is funky. Funk sounds different from different people. Where you live/grew up influences your funk style. With P being from Minnesota, you can hear so many different influences in his music.
To say he's not "funky" is an insult to him and his music. Even a lot of Prince's rock songs have funky elements to them. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

You know, I posed a similar question in the Music non-Prince forum last year, asking why Prince's Jazz CDs weren't "Jazz"
To me, they sounded jazz even though they were apparently peppered with his signature guitar, etc. And I never really got a clear answer---well, let me say, I got some really good answers, but none that actually satisfied my curiosity as to why Prince 'isn't Jazz". I guess the same could be said about" 1. Is Prince rock? 2. Is Prince dance? 2 Is Prince funk? 3. Is Prince pop? You could argue each until the cows come home. Ultimately whatever Prince is doing, it's striking a chord with substantial numbers of listeners.

HatrinaHaterwitz said: Claiming anything on 3121 or Planet Earth is FUNK...IMO...is rationalizing.
If Prince, Sonny & Michael don't give you "the funk face" on the title track to 3121 then you're missing something. You can put Funk in a box and try to define it. It's an impossible task. For that matter, Prince won't fit in the box either. [Edited 5/23/10 9:39am] Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

I loved seeing him play that medley on the BET Awards (with his 3121 blouse on), but "DMSR" was dryer than a nun's pussy. It was utterly soulless. I saw a clip of him earlier from 2004 on Much Music performing "DMSR", and was just embarrassed. When he's cutting out simple lines like "Wear lingerie to a restaurant", the man has lost major amounts of mojo. That doesn't take away from his band always being tight, and able to stop on a dime, but when you're driving a jalopy instead of a vintage tune, who gives a shit, right?
