So by that you would agree that P is funky to a certain degree?

He never said he wasn't, he said there are folks funkier than Prince, and he's right.

What is funk?

Therein lies the issue with this thread.

I define funk as a song that hits HARD on the 1 (down beat). Usually it has a hard bass line and a rhythm guitar that colors the other funky elements.

I think so many people here on the org confuse a funky element with a funk song. Some say "Kiss" is not a funk song. Well, the album version isn't, but the extended version is. That 2nd part is such a traditional JB funk jam.

Kiss (regular version) hits hard on the 1... it has rhythm guitar...

that's not enough to be funk?

i agree prince is not funky ... his 20 minute versions of 1999 and its gonna be a beautiful nite are all played with a beat u might hear at a square dance

his heros are duran duran .. new wave white dance pop

he occasionally plays something funky when he writes on bass

revolution and lovesexy band were funky in a white uptight way

npg was complete canned preprogrammed dead funk

prince is not funky on the whole ..

james brown is funky

prince is only as funky as his band and he hasnt had a tight band since 86

prince plays on technique not soul or spirit ... he lost his drive he lost the funk so long ago ... its very very sad

Some of us, not you. Just read replies in this thread. You can hardly state your own opinion because of all those people who can't read. This thread is called "maybe Prince isn't THAT funky", not "Prince isn't funky".

I think the album version is a pop/r&b song built on funk. To me, "Kiss" (album/single) is structured like a straight up pop song.

EXACTLY.
My only issue is with fams that go overboard using the word "funk" to describe Prince, and they act like he took the f-ing baton from George and ran with it.

ok. But couldn't we equally start a thread that said "prince isn't pop" or "prince isn't r&b"...

Sure you could. But most fams will admit that Prince isn't just a pop artist or just an r&b artist.

But for some strange reason they tend to confuse "funky" with "funk". So if Prince has a song that makes them dance and feel kinda funny while shaking their butts "IT'S GOT TO BE A FUNK SONG!!!!!"

ergo, "Prince is the new KANG OF FUNK!!!!! WOOOOO!!!!!"

Prince is to funk as seven is shooting craps, Sometimes he gets lucky and pulls it off, sometimes not.

Remember, trying to be funky is like trying to be funny, and most of the time people are funny when they are not trying to be and it just happens.

So we're paying Prince the biggest compliment here by saying he's not any of these genres. He created his own genre.

In my house, I have all of my Prince music separated from everyone. He's his own genre to me.

When I go to a music store, I've seen Prince's music in the pop/rock and r&b sections. Does Chaos and Disorder really belong in the r&b section? does MPLSOUND belong in the pop section?

cool. I've seen in other threads people saying Prince's not an innovator... that he just recycled stuff from other artists... at least in this thread we admit he created something new... it's not funk pop or r&B... but something in and of itself...

I did it the exact same way. Everything is in it's own category except for Prince and related stuff, but to me it is its own genre.

To me, Prince's music encompasses so many different elements and genres. He can easily write a pop ballad and a sexy r&b ballad. I wouldn't say he does something "new" per se, but I would say that he has so many sides to his music that it can't all be clumped into one genre.
