I'll chime in-
I'm discovering that Prince can be anything he wants to musically, other artist mentioned, I feel they don't stretch themselves like Prince does. And thats fine, thats what makes them great. Prince might not be the best singer like Stevie Wonder or Michael Jackson, but Prince does everything that all of his peers does well, and in the 80's he was IN THE ZONE. I think also even if you don't like his recent output, I'm still thankful that Prince is still alive and recording! Peace  At this point in history, we have a choice to make

As one music professor stated many few years ago, the Spice Girls musically were more harmonious and melodic than Oasis. But we are talking about art here which often (rightly or wrongly) ignores the conventions of standards. | |

Art is also completely subjective. Making this thread, and all the other 'best of all time' threads, a complete waste of time. So my guess for the motivation of these threads? Ego. Some people clearly want to be seen to be the fan of the 'BEST....'. "Look at me! Not only do I listen to great music, I listen to the BEST music. Written by the most talented person EVER. I can prove it by this elaborate criteria I've made up. It does away with all this subjective arty bullshit. Seriously, how good am I?! How amazing is my taste!?" So perhaps every post that goes to PROVE that Prince/MJ/Whoever is undoubtedly the most talented person to ever take a shit, is nothing more than a personal vindication how flawless their taste in music is. Lots of talent, don't believe, go on youtube, look up Nat King Cole and see him demolish a piano and sing pitch perfect with no effort, or watch even an old cab calloway outdance just about anyone else. Too many great ones, and the oldsters didn't have half the attitudes these jerks today do. | |

If you want the debate on who can outdo Prince then let's pick a style/era/genre. 60s pop for instance. Sorry but Prince is shit at that. Metal? Umm, once again Prince flounders. How about folk? Not exactly John Martyn is he? Guitar face off between Larry Carlton and Prince? Why bother as we're talking different levels of comprehension and ability. There are lots of people who can beat Prince at anything (Russel Brand as the celebrity swordsman for instance), it just all comes down to what you like. Most people like Prince's Raspberry Berets and Doves Crying but can't stand his other stuff. As some of my colleagues put it when I'm playing Prince at work, "Man, you listen to some shit." Admittedly it's been times when I've put on Rainbow Children or Emancipation. My mate Jacko adores Paul Weller (bar the Style Council years) and loves his punk (Clash and so on) so there's no way he's gonna enjoy Prince and the whole Minneapolis funk thing. It's horses for courses. Personally I think the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Howard Shore are musically superior to Prince. But I know who I listen to more often. | |
