Well, I think Prince is untouchable overall. That's why I F with him. lol Look at the variety of great artists he's being compared to in this thread. It's that variety that shows just how bad he is. And he's still in top form in concert. You need to recognize.

innocent NEVER! haha Actually I was the stage manager for a theatre group in Hollywood. We were doing two one-act plays each night (Thurs-Saturday), and the first of the two was called "Father, Save Your Skin". It was a play about Minnesota Native Americans. The director, my friend Jane, knew Iron Eyes Cody somehow. We went to pick him up one night for the show. He sang an Indian song, and did some prayer and spoke for a minute before the show. It was nice. Although I'm from Oklahoma, which is full of Indian history (Oklahoma means Red man), and we have the five civilized tribes, I was just never much into Indian history. I can still name the tribes through. Choctaw, Seminole, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Creek.
[Edited 7/22/09 13:56pm]

Old Iron Eyes, actually he was Italian, I'm sure you knew that.

True on every point. Prince has never been what I call a "vocalist". He does rely heavily on his Falsetto register. His natural voice is unimpressive to say the least.

Kids back in the 80's were dancing like MJ. Even now, I remember last year a whole episode on America's Best Dance Crew was dedicated to MJ. His influence on todays youth is crazy! lol

I think Prince natural voice is impressive. MJ on the other hand I can't say the same. MJ may had dance, but I believe that makes up for other lack of talents. I'm not going to go further into that because I know this isn't a Prince vs MJ. One person I agree who is in a league with Prince is Stevie Wonder, but he doesn't have quite the diversity. ie have you ever heard Stevie Wonder do rock? I could be wrong because I haven't.

I think Prince is a good vocalist, but not a great one.I wouldn't put him up there with the greatest male vocalists of all time, like Otis Redding,Al Green or Marvin Gaye.

It is subjective and tricky too, lots of musicians excel on many instruments, lots of musicians write great songs, lots of them can enthrall an audience. Music is also a wide spectrum, wide, wide spectrum, some people can be the best at one thing and ok at everything else. Just no way you can say something like this without looking foolish. Just too much talent out there. And, I prefer to listen to lots of music, so I won't stop admiring a Frank Sinatra or a Nat King Cole etc.., to worship one guy.

Stevie Wonder? No not really, imo.

He was great in the 1970s, but how many great albums has Stevie made since the Hotter Than July masterpiece in - was it 1981...??

His last one wasn't good, A Time To Love, only the single he sang with Prince on Guitar was okay,

Conversation Peace in 1995 was okay too, but otherwise Stevie hasn't made great albums since... 1981.

People say the same thing about Prince with Chaos and Disorder, Crystal Ball, Planet Earth etc. They say Prince reached his peak with SOTT or Emanicpation. It's all relative really.

Yeah, the general consensus (among the general public) seems to be:

The 70s=Stevie's golden period
The 80s=Prince's golden period

If you think Stevie hasn't made a great album since 'Hotter Than July',be aware that there are many people who think Prince hasn't made a great album since 'Lovesexy'.For the record,I don't agree with either of those opinions wink

Obviously. It's just a light debate of cultural importance, creative juice and musical impact. I'm sure we all dig many different artists/musicians/singers but the question is a little more pointed. I love the music of Stevie, Aretha, Al Green, Parliament/Funkadelic/Funk, Fiona Apple, Winehouse, Wainwright, Bjork, Meshell, Miles...but they fall short of Prince in the perimeters of this argument.

I agree. And to lump the Dave Matthews Band as being on anything close to the musical level of P is a joke.

Clapton has acknowledged P's musical greatness, even calling him one of his favorite guitarists.

I don't know if it's been said before on this thread but the thing about music that makes it so incredible is that it all hit us in a certain kind of way. There are a lot of wonderful artists out here now but for me to say who the best is doesn't really matter any. That's because I think that music is an individual thing. Where one can say that Stevie Wonder or Michael Jackson were the best at A, B, C or D, another will say that's not true. Prince is the man when it comes to doing his own thing but so is David Bowie when he's doing his own thing too. No one is right but no one is wrong either. We can debate this till the sky turns green but we all won't agree with just one person being the best or that no one can mess with "____". It's all an opinion. Doesn't mean we can't talk about it either, but I think we won't come to one answer when there are so many that are so great at what they do. I hope that makes sense. biggrin
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Its just about personal tastes. Just coz someone likes another artist over another doesnt make the other artist wrong/better especially the ones that have had the same longevity musical careers, no matter how many times u say it!

Criteria: Influence/Impact, Longevity of Creativity, Complexity/Diversity of Sounds, Multi-Dimensional Talents (Songwriting, Production, Performance, Musicianship, etc), Intangibles.

In my opinion the following do not fit the bill: Springsteen, U2, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan.

Arguments anyone?

Bob Dylan just arrived at the right place at the right time. Ive watched video after video of Dylan. Documentary after documentary. Ive even seen him in concert. In all reality, he sucks and always has. He was just a decent story teller SOMETIMES. His voice is horrible, his guitar playing is mediocre at best. And his stage presence is that of an old time country singer. I know hes considered a legend and influencial, but Ill never understand it. The only thing i like about him is his interviews. I read somwhere that Prince snubbed Dylan years ago...lol

Yeah, I started the "Is Prince the Best of All Time?" thread...lol

The answer is simple really...NO ONE can F with P...not only in the last 60 years, but, EVER...No offense, but did someone really mention MJ in THIS discussion???

What I want to discuss is WHY it is that Prince isn't given his due???...the man has done it all on a very high level for a very long time...his musicianship is top notch, his songwriting clever and thought-provoking, his singing is stellar, his dancing was spectacular, his style is immpeccable....yet, here we are, on a site dedicated to the man, and EVEN WE cannot give him his due....What do you expect the rest of the world to do???

Prince the best...ever?? Are you serious? C'mon. Do you honestly believe that Prince is a better Musician than Beethoven or Mozart? Funky..yes. Talented..yes. But, the best ever..No

Let's not even get into the performing part. But, since you mentioned MJ...I will. I saw both perform. Prince was cool...but I was ready to leave an hour into it. Let's just say that if I wanted a James Brown review concert I would have saw the Godfather himself. I saw MJ in 1987...words cannot express the brilliance I witnessed. Singing and dancing were flawless. Prince is about Musicianship...nothing else. It takes more to be looked at as the Greatest Ever.

Dancing - Let's put it out there. Prince is NOT or never was a great "Dancer". Sure, he did cute moves & splits..and acrobatic stuff like that. But, MJ is on another planet when it comes to "Dancing". Ask any street kid who can dance..and Prince won't even get mentioned. But, I bet MJ will. lol

Singing - Prince has a good Falsetto. Is he a pure singer like MJ or Stevie Wonder?? Not in your wildest dreams. MJ would have sung Prince under the table...when he was 14! lol Prince could not hold 1 candle to Stevie when it somes to singing. Like I said...good Falsetto...that's it.

Musicianship - What can Prince do on Guitar that Jimi wasn't doing back in 1967? Don't worry...I'll wait. lol On Piano...what can Prince do that Herbie Hanckock wasn't doing with Miles Davis & still doing now???

I just named 3 categories for you: Dancing, Singing, Musicianship. Prince is not the best in any of these categories. Can you tell me one category that he IS the best in??

Don't worry....I'll wait. wink
[Edited 7/22/09 15:08pm]

it was flawless cause he was LIP SYNCHING MORE THAN HALF THE SHOW!!! and doing the same routines he did on the victory tour ..go ahead look it up on youtube ..i'll wait ...

and when u come back from discovering the horror that u were mislead, bamboozled and hoodwinked. or maybe ur ear isn't trained enough 2 discern the difference between live and memorex
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Hey Ernest

Isn't it ironic how you defend P to the detractors, yet marginalize him every chance you get on this site? Your comments about P 'not being able to hold a candle' to the artists you named...and the other offhanded remarks...are downright questionable.

Look, you're grown (I assume) and you can say anything you like on a blog. But you should know that you seem to me to carry a hatred for P, beneath your exterior. The comments about P being 'racist' (TRC) and the constant marginaliztion....

And 'no', I am not some young/dumb Prince-bot. There are a handful of things that I don't like about P as well. But I don't feel as if I need to marginalize one of the greatest talents of musical history in order to neutralize an argument.

I know many of the members on this site have mad respect for you, as do I, but I had to call you out.....

Um.....what? You didn't call anyone out, sunshine.

I'm not the only one who thinks Prince put a lot of racism on TRC. They voice it as much as I do.

And you're right, I can say whatever I want. I will continue to do so. I didn't really need the confirmation from you on it, but it was a sweet effort. comfort

Ernest, I have to tell ya'. You have an elitist, passive-aggressive undertone about you. Forever 'name-dropping', as to give your posts clout. The consummate expert. I can only SMH and proceed, before I slide the slippery slope, get nasty, and use the full expanse of my ever-widening vocabulary to expose the astonishing magnitude of your immature, blogospheric bully-tactics.
