I have said it before and I will say it again. Prince is like an all around gymnast. He may not be the best in any particular area, but he is so darn close that when you add up all the event scores, he wins every time! biggrin

Stevie, in my book, is the only one who even comes close!
Wake up!......Wake up!

Prince is a good singer. The fact that he can sing in the falsetto even though his voice is deep (Barry White like) is very impressive. Stevie Wonder and MJ are good singers too but not GREAT the way some of you want to make them out to be. The best African American singer in recent years was Luther Vandross RIP. The poster who started this thread asked the question of who is better than Prince in different dimensions of talent and the answer is no one. A lot of artists are good in certain things but they are not good in a multitude of things. The only one who comes close is Stevie Wonder but he is not an entertainer. BTW, there is one particular poster (not naming names but who commented in this thread) who never has anything positive to say about Prince or his music. I can understand criticism but when its 24/7, I'm like dude why don't you just find another artist to get into instead of wasting your time posting on this board.

Prince is the full package..he can do a little bit of every thing...

and I think the only artist who can match his constant out put would be miles davis....

The quanity of music that he does entirly by himself is amazing...thats what seperates him fromthe rest....plus who else can fuck with hip hop, r and b, jazz, rock, funk, classical, folk, house, new wave and make it all sound good.

prince is overall considered one of the best...

song writers
guitarist
the best falsetto of our generation
dancers (ask bet)
performers....it might sound like i'm out of my mind...but Prince is the

Listen again. Prince and Barry White do not have the same type of voice. Prince might be able to hit low notes, but his register is nowhere near that of Barry White. And yes Stevie Wonder is a great singer, great songwriter, great multi-instrumentalist. Even Prince said that any good artist will gauge their work against Stevie's Songs In The Key Of Life.

I'm suprised these names haven't been added to the debate:

Aretha- Greatest ever singer, interesting pianist, prodigy, multiple styles and genres, iconic, long career

JB- Multi-talented, underappreciated musician, composer, songwriter, brilliant performer, Influential and innovative over several decades. Not as diverse musically as P or Stevie and without their pop songcraft.

Marvin Gaye- Amazing singer, performer. Great Songwriter. Complex career. Defined album concept with What's Goin On. Hugely influential (Stevie), Conflicted, Complex.

Rolling Stones- That catalog is so deep.

Not anymore. His songs are ridiculous most of the time. What 51 year old goes around singing "I got a box o' chocolates that'll knock the socks of any girl that wanna come my way...." I mean REALLY?! REALLY?!?!?!

guitarist

He's up there, but he still can't hold a candle to folks like Clapton, or even John Mayer, or Dave Matthews, the last two being very underrated guitarists.

the best falsetto of our generation

Yeah, cuz BET is the end all and be all of black music opinion. rolleyes
Prince ain't a dancer the way MJ or even someone like Ne-Yo or Chris BeatHerDown Brown is. Prince can do choreography sure. That's not hard for most folks. But he's not coming up with anything terribly original standing behind a guitar that we've not seen since 1982 with him.

I agree with you that Stevie is a monster. His 70's run of creativity is comparable to no one else's except you-know-who's 80's run. What hurts Stevie in this debate is his laziness and lack of productivity over the last twenty-five years. Could you see Prince not putting out an album for 5-8 years? P has put out more strong side projects (Time, Madhouse, Sheila) than most people have in their own catalogs.

Stevie is a great drummer in addition to an all-around multi-instrumentalist. But P is so talented on each instrument and has never needed studio musicians. When Alan Leeds compared Prince and Stevie, he stated that this is where Stevie and Prince are separated in talent. P is a better multi-instrumentalist. Not to mention P's baroque, cutting edge, left-field, brilliant musical compositional mind. And P is the superior stage performer.

innocent NEVER! haha Actually I was the stage manager for a theatre group in Hollywood. We were doing two one-act plays each night (Thurs-Saturday), and the first of the two was called "Father, Save Your Skin". It was a play about Minnesota Native Americans. The director, my friend Jane, knew Iron Eyes Cody somehow. We went to pick him up one night for the show. He sang an Indian song, and did some prayer and spoke for a minute before the show. It was nice. Although I'm from Oklahoma, which is full of Indian history (Oklahoma means Red man), and we have the five civilized tribes, I was just never much into Indian history. I can still name the tribes through. Choctaw, Seminole, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Creek.
[Edited 7/22/09 13:56pm]

Actually did you know that he is Italian and not Native American? I was UPSET when I learned that. Hollywood would give a lot of people jobs playing Indians, but they wouldn't hire REL Native people for a good while back in the day! confused

Hey Ernest

Isn't it ironic how you defend P to the detractors, yet marginalize him every chance you get on this site? Your comments about P 'not being able to hold a candle' to the artists you named...and the other offhanded remarks...are downright questionable.

Look, you're grown (I assume) and you can say anything you like on a blog. But you should know that you seem to me to carry a hatred for P, beneath your exterior. The comments about P being 'racist' (TRC) and the constant marginaliztion....

And 'no', I am not some young/dumb Prince-bot. There are a handful of things that I don't like about P as well. But I don't feel as if I need to marginalize one of the greatest talents of musical history in order to neutralize an argument.

I know many of the members on this site have mad respect for you, as do I, but I had to call you out.....

Too true. It's one thing to disagree with someone. It's also a hell of a thing to start a "Who can fuck with Prince" bait thread in the 1st place.

However, it's another kind of madness to constantly bash Prince, and poke his fans on THE Prince fan site. I mean, feel free to do it, but the way I see it is this:

It is a PRINCE FANSITE people are supposed to be crazy and overreaching of their admiration for Prince. If someone builds a lifesize Prince statue out of styrofoam and prays to it at their house....they probably should hang out at this website. It would be time and energy well spent.

Yet, someone who is honestly going to try to choose John Mayer and Dave (overrated) Matthews over Prince is, in my eyes, wasting their breath and time convincing people at this website. Again, feel free, but what it the point?

Prince the best...ever?? Are you serious? C'mon. Do you honestly believe that Prince is a better Musician than Beethoven or Mozart? Funky..yes. Talented..yes. But, the best ever..No

Let's not even get into the performing part. But, since you mentioned MJ...I will. I saw both perform. Prince was cool...but I was ready to leave an hour into it. Let's just say that if I wanted a James Brown review concert I would have saw the Godfather himself. I saw MJ in 1987...words cannot express the brilliance I witnessed. Singing and dancing were flawless. Prince is about Musicianship...nothing else. It takes more to be looked at as the Greatest Ever.

Dancing - Let's put it out there. Prince is NOT or never was a great "Dancer". Sure, he did cute moves & splits..and acrobatic stuff like that. But, MJ is on another planet when it comes to "Dancing". Ask any street kid who can dance..and Prince won't even get mentioned. But, I bet MJ will. lol

Singing - Prince has a good Falsetto. Is he a pure singer like MJ or Stevie Wonder?? Not in your wildest dreams. MJ would have sung Prince under the table...when he was 14! lol Prince could not hold 1 candle to Stevie when it somes to singing. Like I said...good Falsetto...that's it.

Musicianship - What can Prince do on Guitar that Jimi wasn't doing back in 1967? Don't worry...I'll wait. lol On Piano...what can Prince do that Herbie Hanckock wasn't doing with Miles Davis & still doing now???

I just named 3 categories for you: Dancing, Singing, Musicianship. Prince is not the best in any of these categories. Can you tell me one category that he IS the best in??

Don't worry....I'll wait.

Spot on. Let's not forget that at the same age, MJ was singing in his real voice, while Prince said he couldn't, and it hurt his throat to do so, hence the falsetto. Prince can certainly hold his own singing at this point, but MJ's definitely had more time in the business using his real voice. Even on more recent songs like "Childhood", and "Smile", MJ's voice was in great shape. It seems Prince jumps to the falsetto when he can't quite pull it off in his regular register. "Somewhere Here On Earth" would have been even better if he just sang it straight out. Same with some of the mess on the One Nite Alone album.

And it's true about the dancing. Kids weren't doing The Bird on the streets in 1984, they were still doing the Moonwalk and the "Thriller" dance.

eek

I agree with everything both of you stated. If I were to have posted before you, I would have typed those exact sentiments.

In addition, I think Prince is a modern "renaissance entertainer." Like Queen Latifah, for example. Both of them do/did almost EVERYTHING possible regarding music, modeling, and acting. They are very good at what they do onstage or in the studio, and are unique. But are they the "best" or "most amazing" of any of it like MJ, Stevie, or even Whitney? Absolutely not. But as a complete package, both are outstanding, especially considering their efforts to be skilled in so many different forms of musical art simultaneously.

Meat and Cheese

I just named 3 categories for you: Dancing, Singing, Musicianship. Prince is not the best in any of these categories. Can you tell me one category that he IS the best in??

Here is the deal. I like a good sandwich and not just the parts. Now, Hendrix might have made the best meat, and Herbie might have made some stanky good cheese, but neither put it together the way Prince did. None made a sandwich.

Sure, Hendrix was "better" than Prince on guitar, but it was meat..no funk, no synth, no sandwich.

Prince is the great amalgamator. His gift (which makes him like no other) is how he is damn good at everything. The best at any one thing? Probably not. Most well rounded and versatile? You know it.

Ever play Super Mario 2? Prince is like Mario. Not the best at anyone thing, but the only character you would want for any level, anytime, anywhere.

Lastly...doesn't the fact that you all are deep with in the bowels of a Prince fan site, arguing how great his isn't, nullify your argument quite a bit? I mean, you are registered here. You are fans already. We used to call that "fronting" or "posing".

LOL, Man you're funny. I didn't say he talked like Barry White, either. His voice is deep, similar to Barry White. Don't you know that the human voice differs in tone. Some people have deep voices, soft voices, high pitch voices, nasal voices, etc. I have a soft voice.
