I agree that it's not a rip-off if it's priced in such a way that it's not mass-market. If you don't buy it you can't be ripped off.

But its not really presenting any new content... apart from the concert video, which is of unknown quality. (I suspect it's just edited-together footage from the audience screen cameras, intercut with some interviews. But I guess we'll find out eventually).

I think the frustration stems from the fact that a vast amount of time and money is getting directed into producing and promoting merchandise that the fans don't really want (and in this case can't afford).

Who here would not have traded the Indigo Nights book and CD, the Lotusflow3r subscription and the free Planet Earth CD, for a professionally shot and recorded double DVD of (Disc 1) the O2 Arena show, and (Disc 2) highlights from the Indigo aftershows (or even just the last night).

A really great live DVD would have made the fans happy, massively enhanced P's reputation, and would have been a product that would have sold and sold and sold, for years to come.

Can you say that about "Indigo Nights"?

I'd also bet that a double DVD could have been produced for less than it cost to simply print the Indigo Nights book - which I suspect was sold at a loss in the end.

For comparison, last year we produced a triple DVD and a five-disc CD box set (two separate products) from The Mission's final shows in London. Ten cameras at the last show, full multitrack recording and mix from every night, editing/post production and authoring. The fans are crazy for it, it was a top-ten selling music DVD the week of release, it has five-star reviews all over the place, yet it probably cost less to make than a single night's London hotel bills for Prince's band and crew.

I love what he does, but still, Prince strikes me a bit like the husband or wife who only ever buys Christmas presents that they'd like to get for themselves.

I don't have a problem with the Opus in principle. There's nothing wrong with limited edition items being offered for inflated prices. It could even turn out to be an investment, it's highly likely that you'd be able to sell it on for a profit within a short time.

The thing that really worries me though is this. If Prince sees this as worth $2100, then he probably thinks that we've already had more than $77 worth from lotusflow3r.com.
