Cosmic Day:Was it worth it??

At Housequake.com this song was 1 of the most discussed/debated songs on that site. Now that the sample is floating around, did it in your opinion live up 2 all the hype & praise bestowed upon it?

It absolutely did, it's simply amazing. I must have played that minute long clip 500x in a row when I first got hold of it.

I'd sell a kidney for the full version.

Nice username btw. Love Prince's demo of "Mind Bells". Released version is cool too but obviously mostly in Japanese so I can't understand what's being said....but still FUNKY

It's ok, nice intro, camille vocals, hard to comment on a 1:01 long clip really.

Oh, now U bring on a very cool subject! I really wish that a full version of this uncomparable gem could see the light of day.
That 1:something version gives U the hint of a wonderfully beautiful musical anarchy. The sped up voice, the arrangement are a clear sign that he was really having a lot of fun those days.

Well, there is at least one person at the org that swears he/she has the full version! He/she swore I was not as huge of a Prince fan as he/she was because I did not have the full version. (I was laughing at that one)
But I digress...The first time I heard it, I was like....Hmmmm. That is interesting. The second time it became more interesting. And then I ended up digging it. However for me, it is really hard to grasp the entire concept because it does not last long enough.
However, a few points I can make is that I am loving the sped up voice and that it sounds quirky and fun.

Forgot to mention, the guitar rocks on it too, comes in sounding like a chainsaw.

I like 'Traffic Jam' and 'Big House' too.

Whoa! Where did these gems come from?

What was the thinking behind releasing these, so close to the release of the new albums? Maybe they've been out for a while?

Faves:

1)Everybody Want What They Don't Got
2)Go
3)Traffic Jam / Hard To Get ('81 version)
4)Cosmic Day (intriguing intro, want to hear more)

The leak happened about a year ago, possibly more.

The story goes that there was a promo tape containing 2-minute snippets of various songs that Prince was offering for other artists to record their own versions of.

These two minute snippets on the tape were ripped to MP3 and shortened even further, making the 1 minute clips which were then uploaded somewhere online, or shared initally amongst hardcore collectors, and then found their way out to places where anyone could find them.

It's a really cool sounding song, but it didn't exactly live up to the hype, in my opinion. But it's still really cool!

Thanks Militant

That dude is truly a Jukebox with a Heartbeat! I had no idea these cuts had been on the street so long. I'd give my left kneecap for the ability to play everything that I hear, as Prince obviously can.

Peace

its aiiight. Not totally convinced its even Prince on the vocals as its even faster than the usual Camile voice.

Much more impressed by "Stone" (Heart of?), a more recent tune I just discovered. Dont understand how that hasnt been released yet he releases dreck like Life O' the Party.

It is Prince.

The reason why the vocals are even higher, is because all the other Camille songs were recorded in his natural register (ie a lower tone) and then speeded up.

Cosmic Day, on the other hand was originally sung in falsetto and then speeded up. So that's why it sounds higher.

And "Stone" is definately a great track.

Yeah it sort of did.

And so did "Traffic Jam" and the studio version of "Go" from those snippets.

I was just listening to this on my iPod today, what a coincidence!
It certainly lives up to the hype imo, but it's just different from what we expected.

I absolutely love the psychedelic sound and lyrics of it... if only we could hear the full version one day. Is there any info on how long the full version is?? cool

Ok so I just went and listened to these for the first time. (Funny how fast and easy it is to get interesting Prince stuff on the net except on his own site)

Cosmic Day was getting hype & praise? Yikes! To me most of those snips sound like his typical 90's cheese, Cosmic Day in particular brings to mind Camille versions of "Three Chains o gold" and "Graffiti Bridge"

The only ones that I find interesting are "Traffic Jam" & "hard to get (81 version)"

I think it’s cool and interesting to listen to Prince outtakes, but a lot of these outtakes are only of interest to us hardcore fans as curiosities, and most rightly belong under wraps

Heard about these for what seems like forever now.
Came across this thread and decided it was finally time to scour the interwebs for this "release"... didn't take as long as I expected.
After all the hype, here's my not-so-humble-opinion:

Cosmic Day - Really?!? This is the track that's gotten all the hype for years now by the few that had heard it before this release? Wow, I'm not feeling it.

Everybody Wants What They Don't Got - Interesting, I like it, want to hear more.

Adonis And Bathsheba - Nice vocal arrangement, musically very typical of Prince, nothing new. No strong feelings either way about this one... S'alright.

Hard To Get ('81 Version) - 1981 indeed! I dig this one, need to hear more.

Big House - This one's interesting, too. Wouldn't mind hearing more of this as well.

Traffic Jam - Now this is GOOD! Gimme more!!

Go - Don't dislike it, but not especially digging it either.

Overall, while it's always nice to hear new old Prince tracks. It's annoying that they are such short samples and they certainly don't live up to the hype bestowed upon them these past few years. I mean, people talked like Cosmic Day was the great unknown masterpiece... I wouldn't rank any of these in my top 50 Prince outtakes list.
