You realize that the private party only happens if you win the Sotheby's auction later this year for the diamond-encrusted version. Buying the $2100 one doesn't get you a shot at that.

Nope... The prize draw is for all books - if your certificate number is drawn by Prince, you win. simples

The Hollywood Elite at his parties can afford this...

That "Million Dollar Check" better be in your box beforehand!

One person who's not being considered here is Randee, the photographer. This could be being done to help promote her work also, since she is the one who will be signing the books. If Prince was approached about doing this by Opus, should he have turned it down, when that would've meant shutting her out of it too?

They seem to have a good relationship which has lasted over the years, so maybe he wants to help her get some more sales and $$, who knows? But why the hell get all angry and self-righteous over it? So should everyone who has the Opus sets for sale all be burned at the stake because the items are pricey collectibles?

Some of you guys remind me of my eldest sister telling my mom I shouldn't get to go to The Doors concert because she would never have been allowed to do something like that. hammer STFU and let others enjoy what they like! Why deny someone something they may consider special, just because you don't want or can't afford the same thing?!?.

I don't mind too much that Prince is offering the book and the iPod. I don't even care about the price that much - it's not for me, but some people might like it.

What bothers me is the use of alligator skin and leather (some also mention the silk, but I have read conflicting reports on how destructive that really is).

He was outspoken against eating meat, milk, and even shearing wool from sheep. I think that was a late 90s fad for him, and I also think it was more based on what he chose to put into his own body than about the animal's welfare.

But everything doesn't have to be FOR US. There are other collectors, that may like the special binding or paper used in the book. Just because YOU don't want it, others might, so why shouldn't they have the opportunity? If I had the extra $$, I'd sure as hell get one for my collection. But, by your logic, I shouldn't be able to, because YOU don't think it's needed.

As I said, he's not only lining his pockets, but Randee's and everyone else who is involved in the making/selling of it, thus providing jobs.

Exactly. What really cheeses me off is the attitude of some that if they can't have it - nobody should be able to have it.

Did I call your name? confuse

How, exactly, is Prince being greedy or hypocritical? The company that's doing this has done similar collectibles for others. I'm sure they came to him and said, "We'd like to put this together and we'll give you a cut. What do you say?" Prince thinks to himself, "Hmmmm...there might be some interest in this. They put it together...I get final approval and a cut of the proceeds. There's no risk to me. And no inventory to worry about if they don't sell. Yeah, okay...why not?"

The "hypocritical" accusation I just don't get, at all. Is it an animal thing? He's not a vegetarian. He rarely does anything for free - so I don't think he can be accused of hypocrisy for taking a cut from someone selling a product using his name.

Don't even try any of that semantics bullshit either because we all know if anybody dared put anything on the internet that Prince deemed untrue, his "brilliant" lawyers would not have hesitated in bringing up a lawsuit! rolleyes

This PETA press release came out around the time of the 3121 album, the release of which was celebrated with a party at Prince's place, where sushi was served. You know, that stuff that's made out of Prince's little friends from the sea? lol

Prince hasn't been vegan or vegetarian in years. He just doesn't talk about such things publicly anymore, and I'm guessing if a group like PETA doesn't wanna do their homework and if they want to give him awards, he'll be happy to take them if they make him look in some way righteous.

And if the release of this OPUS mess doesn't put the "Prince is vegan" myth to bed once and for all, then I don't know what else to say to you. lol

how are people supposed to know he is no longer vegan, though?

we at least have a reason to think he was vegan, but what was supposed to signal us that he no longer is? the non-vegan food and alcohol served at his shows was happening even at the height of his reported veganism.

i have been away a while but this truly is a new one on me. if he's no longer vegan then obviously he is not contradicting himself by violating the tenets of veganism.

i'm not interested in this product but the price is not a problem for me. i figured it was a smart move in the sense that people who can afford it will pay for it and he'll make money.

Ah, Come on, People!!!
Don't you know that anything that has p-u-s in it
is costly and should be highly prized?
First Elixer, then O-p-u-s wink wink
Fellows, you better get out your checkbooks
And, ladies, you too, those of you who like p-u-s razz razz

See what you are doing to me, Mr. Nelson?
You are turning me into a very naughty girl...
and me likes it, me likes it very much lol lol

Anyway, back to the part of me that is still sane cool
Here is how I am getting it, and I see many of you have
spent the last few days trying to place this someplace
in your minds where you can at least decipher
and tolerate the message behind the madness
But in one simple sentence,
I say the brotha is liquid, so let him flow!!!

Do you all understand the concept of
Intellectual Property (IP) monetization
and collateralization to maximize one's value
by adding liquidity to one's portfolio
whilst at the same time making one's self
more attractive in the marketplace?

Well, since there is a credit freeze, Wall Street meltdown,
and all that, smart minds, who, upon realizing that
there are $5 trillion sitting idle in IP portfolios,
have now ushered in a new era called the IP Stock Market,
offering a new and dynamic vehicle for savvy investors.

Now, of course times are hard,
$2,100 is not easily accessible to the average struggler,
but there are still folks who have cash handy and
want to turn a profit.
And for them, Mr. Nelson has got a product too wink
A brand, such as Prince is, and by recent sales figures
he has demonstrated and proven to be a very lucrative one,
is attractive to this new breed of investor.

Now, I know most folks were expecting that this
would be the kind of stuff you would get on the website
for 77 bucks, but being the smart businessman that
Prince is, he has got to maintain an advantage in
the marketplace whilst at the same time staying competitive.
In the end, this works out well for whoever
owns a piece of Prince
because by him increasing and maintaining value,
whatever piece of memorabilia you own also increases in value.
You kinda grasp the concept?

Now, if you have $2,100 handy, by all means invest.
You not only are gambling on turning that into $31,000
in a few months, but also, based on what the
Limited Edition sells for at auction,
you, more likely than not, will increase the value
of your $2,100 purchase.
And for those who can't afford it, no need to be dismayed;
I am sure he will find something to cater to
your budget very shortly too wink

Now, I don't claim to be an expert in Intellectual Property
Law, nor am I a financial advisor by any long stretch
of the imagination
so please treat this as a disclaimer.
I am just trying to wrap my hands around this
like everyone else here.
And I would sincerely welcome comments, and corrections,
from the smart minds who I know will read this
and understand more about this issue. neutral wink

Yeah and that fact that the author, Randee, is the one signing the books, means that this is benefiting her also. So I guess she should be included as being audacious & greedy. Damn her for trying to have an income producing career!!!
