The time to put record straight was when PETA erroneously awarded him the 2006 sexiest vegetarian award with all the now outdated late-90s quotes attached.

you know what - i agree with others on this forum and pls dont bash me as everyone has their opinions (as well as P)....

this whole opus thing has gone waay out of control - yeh ok he's released a follow up to the book with an ipod and whatever else you might get with it.....we're NOT entitled to go and buy it nor is P entitled to go sell merchandise at 31.21 every time. it doesnt make you less of a fan if you cant afford it so screw it - wait till theres something you can afford. Prince is doing just what he thinks or feels is right - or maybe not even his decision - but even so.....I reeally dont think he deserves this much bashing just cos of this book. there are different nieches in markets and you obviously arnt one of them.

ive been upset with some decisions in terms of Prince's strategy towards things but hey, he's not out there JUST for me...he's an artist and expressing as it comes. and i wont start bashing him and sayin shit just to make me feel better cos you know what?? ITS ABOUT THE MUSIC and im diggin the new stuff.

Rant over....carry on chatterbox

I guess this confirms that Prince no longer lives a harcore Vegan lifestyle anymore.I couldn't fathom him promoting a product that took the lives of so many animals and living creatures to create if he was stil Vegan. Either that or he's not an animal rights actiivst anymore.

it is really freaking expensive, and to be honest, if i hadn't gotten it as a christmas gift, i don't know that i would have shelled out the money for it on my own accord. but i have to admit, it IS nice, and a lot of fun to flip through. and it's autographed by bowie himself. for $5 or 600, however much it cost, at least it's something that a normal human being could consider owning if they were that big of a fan.

THINKTIMM

I would buy it if I had $2100 to spend on Prince... I have damn near have everyting that I could buy within reason. The key is within reason. I have the 21 Nights book and honestly I never read it... I looked @ the pictures and loaded the CD on my PC. It does become a good conversation peice when company comes over, as does everything else Prince related.

As 4 Prince himself or the company that put this project 2gether... It works, it a good qaulity collector item 4 those who can afford it. It's a realy nice book and the jewel encrusted symbol, is the greatest thing ever and don't 4getthe 40 minute documentry (like we won't b searching 4 it 2 leak out). Like I said... If this was a few years ago, and I wanted 2 spend $2100, I would without thought order it. I now have a family and I don't go off the deep end 4 Prince collectables like I used 2.

I stand by the thought that Prince can demand such a price 4 those who want 2 pay the price. Prince has just as many fans that r not effected financally by the "recession" here in America. It's their choice 2 buy or not 2 buy such a book. I know that, I would... if I could bring myself 2 part with the cash, just 2 say that I have something that under a 950 people in the world have that is a true Prince collectable. But that is where it would stop becuase A collectable like this doesn't belong 2 those who trip over the price.
THINKTIMM... if nothing else!!!

I'm not saying that he doesn't have 950 fans, I'm saying that there aren't 950 fans who'd spend that money. And even if there are: I hope that they aren't hoping that this is an "investment" of sorts.

Compare it to NIN's ultra-deluxe edition of Ghosts:

http://www.ninwiki.com/Ghosts#Formats

Ghosts I–IV (also known as Halo 26) is the seventh studio album from Nine Inch Nails, released March 2, 2008

[...]

Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition, which includes everything in the Deluxe Edition, as well as the album on a 4-part 180 gram vinyl edition and two Giclée prints. This version is limited to 2500 copies, each of which is numbered and signed by Reznor himself. Although it was initally expected that this edition would take a while to sell out, it was announced on March 4, 2008 that all 2500 copies had been sold.

See, this worked, because the initial package was affordable, it was valuable and it was collectible, and it just reeked of Reznor. I bet most of those things actually ended up in the hands of fans.

Prince's set however is some gaudy crap, thought up by a company. It is impersonal, it's rehashed crap that wasn't selling in the first place. It seems squarely aimed at a public that doesn't give a hoot about Prince but likes to spend ridiculous money and dumb crap, plus the occasional avid collector with more money than sense.

Let's face it: when most fans think $77 is a ridiculous price for a website subscription (and it is), $2100 is just obscene. Add to that the ultra-tacky contest where one buyer can win £21,000...

This is yet another lame stunt.

And to think that he could easily get massive publicity by releasing a Special Edition of Purple Rain.

I don't believe i said it was the most collectible/rarest piece of crap available... I just pointed out you were wrong in stating that 950 isn't limited... And your follow up example states a limited number of 2500... nearly 3 x 950, methinks hmm

how are people supposed to know he is no longer vegan, though?

we at least have a reason to think he was vegan, but what was supposed to signal us that he no longer is? the non-vegan food and alcohol served at his shows was happening even at the height of his reported veganism.

i have been away a while but this truly is a new one on me. if he's no longer vegan then obviously he is not contradicting himself by violating the tenets of veganism.

i'm not interested in this product but the price is not a problem for me. i figured it was a smart move in the sense that people who can afford it will pay for it and he'll make money.

Maybe for really valuable stuff, like ultra-rare releases. But this?

stanleylieber said:

my memory of the gold era is that there were something on the order of 20-30 folks posting regularly who were wealthy enough to follow him around all over the world.

I don't doubt that there are some people who'll buy these things. But 950 of them? $2100 is a lot of money.

Let's look at this:

http://eil.com/fulltext/s...prodtype=1

Or this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PRI...26004r2157

I mean, that's the "51 Hours" promo, 25/30 copies in existence, and it's £275.00 . If there are 950 people in the world willing to pay $2100 for the hideous crap this thread is about, how come they're not buying this? I mean, this is a steal, plus it is an item that will go up in price since Prince doesn't seem eager to release the track.

i don't necessarily think his richest fans are his most knowledgeable or even that they are the ones who necessarily care the most about his unreleased/rare material. you could very well be right that there aren't 950 people willing to drop $2100 on this new item.

i think the crux of this is that it doesn't prove anything. prince is perfectly capable of still being a hardcore vegan while simultaneously releasing a product like this. it's not like the man has never contradicted himself before.

to me, cognitive dissonance like this is annoying. is the ambiguity still fun when it's a matter of life and death?

maybe prince was never a vegetarian or vegan at all. maybe he was just writing meaningless lyrics to go with his music.

that is one of the interviews i remember. prince calling himself a vegan out of his own mouth. so there's one down; prince was a vegan.

now, do we have a comparable source where prince declares that he is not a vegan, or are we really just basing that claim on assumptions drawn from him providing sushi at a live show?

i'm saying, we can't expect to draw such concrete inferences from prince's actions. he's a walking contradiction. at the same time, we can't jump on other prince fans for accurately referring to things that have come out of his own mouth. he called himself a vegan. if he is no longer a vegan, then fine. but if he is, then the crocodile/leather/silk thing is hypocritical and it's not unreasonable for that to be pointed out.

Again... it's 2009, people!
Life changes.

because you guys are making assumptions just like we are. i've asked you to tell my why you think prince is no longer vegan, and your response has just been to say that 1996 was a long time ago. i think my assumptions are better sourced. fair enough, i could be wrong. but so could you. unless i'm mistaken, prince hasn't told you he's not vegan, either.

maybe prince was never a vegetarian or vegan at all. maybe he was just writing meaningless lyrics to go with his music.

regardless, i don't see why the question itself is supposed to be irrelevant.

Honestly, I don't care if he never eats again, or sips sewer water....In fact, I think I made that point- that NONE of us knows what he eats/doesn't eat...
I'm just tired of people whining about and insulting each other over what Prince does or does not do. Are any of our lives forever altered if he stops at Fat Burger after leaving the club tonite? No.

So the question is irrelevant because it really doesn't matter in the bigger scheme of things. If U live in the US, we are in the midst of a recession, and there are troops at war. What Prince eats isn't important.

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

i think i'm just out of touch with prince fandom. when i last participated regularly at this site, not being a vegan meant you weren't a prince fan. rolleyes
