is it possible that the numbers reported don't yet have sales from Prince's site - and would those even be included anyway? * * *

Raspberry Beret, U Got The Look and even Purple Rain (the singles) only made it to #2 (If I remember right)!? [Edited 4/8/09 6:45am] You're right. This is just, man it sucks ass right now but he sold a lot. I just hope that Prince won't stop promoting this CD because of this. That's not impossible with him and that's what makes me worry. He needs to go on Oprah and get these sales to rise up. That will work for him if he does this. [Edited 4/8/09 6:48am] No worry, he still did a good job considering dealing with one retailer when you look at it.

Pretty sure ButterscotchPimp works (or used to work) for EMI, so I'd consider his word to be pretty credible as well. Not that yours isn't, though. Now I don't know what to believe! *sits back, grabs popcorn and hopes for Prince to be #1* I do still work for them. And in my 13 years on the job, i've rarely seen Soundscan revise a chart where the #1 changed. I'm not trying to position myself as the "Org Insider" or anything like that, and don't care to be that. I love the new album regardless of if it's #1 or #2. http://www.facebook.com/p...111?ref=ts

considering prince's album is only available at one store vs. the urban album being available presumably everywhere, it's pretty impressive, i think.

All things considered, he sold his CD set exclusively to Target and limited his national promotion of LOTUSFLOW3R to just three late night performances on Jay Leno and yet still sold 168,000 copies while Keith Urban had blanket coverage of sales outlets like Walmart, Target, Amazon, and all of the remaining record stores out there, plus wall-to-wall radio airplay on country radio plus an appearance at the Academy of Country Music Awards and he only edged out Prince by about 3,000 copies. I'd say that Prince still did really well for himself.
And I wouldn't worry so much about the sales numbers as much as the quality of the album. LOTUSFLOW3R is a pretty awesome 2-disc set (not counting the added Bria Valente disc) and is one of his best albums in quite awhile. I was so anxious to get Mariah's E=MC2 CD when it came out about the same time last year, and it sold over 450,000 copies in the first week; but as much as I love Mariah, frankly that CD sucked. So far, I've been listening to Prince's new albums almost non-stop.

This hype over 1st week sales is a waste of time.
The real question is: Do U like the material? Does the public know that it is available? Do they have access 2 buy it? Are they interested in the material?

Graycap23 said: stanleylieber said: everyone knows that. Then why is this thread up to 76 replys?.....lol because for obvious reasons prince scoring a #1 independent of record labels would be big/great news for prince and prince fans alike. it's not that the charts matter in terms of enjoying the music, but the impact of his new releases definitely has an affect on how he chooses to proceed in the future. chart success or chart failure also help define his options if he chooses to work with a label again. being able to point to a recent #1 gives him more bargaining power, regardless of the crooked nature of the charts. it's a complex game! it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die
