None of this Lotus Flower stuff seems to matter that much now since we've Heard The King is coming back.
My focus is well and truly on the O2.

No, it's about alot of issues regarding this corporation. It doesn't look good from Prince's standpoint. That is what the discussion is about. You can argue the point all you want. But when the smoke clears it still doesn't look ethical. It's a company that relies on intimidation and Slave Labor. I don't know about you but that isn't a good road to traverse for any independent artist.

I do not agree.

My first part-time job as a waitress only paid 5.75 and hour. There are a lot of stores that pay minimum wage. A lot of times they pay that for jobs that are not all that challenging. I do not mean that to put anyone down but the more a person works and learns the more that person can move up in the world.
If you owned a large business would you pay 11.00 or more an hour to your employees for pushing carts inside and bagging merchandise? Jobs like these are aimed more at the younger generation part-time employees to give them a starter type job. This is just my outlook on it.
I already stated my opinion on the union issue (which to me is NOT an issue).
If there is a particular Target store that does not 'recognize' its' employees than that particular store could simply be bad management...not 'bad chain'.
And I do not feel that any of this makes it look bad on Prince or Bria.
But again, my opinion.
This again is not intended to put anyone down, however, honestly those minimum wage type jobs are targeted (I think) towards the newer worker. I never expected anymore than min. wage when I was started my career.
I would have been happy making 8.40 or 7.75 an hour at my first job!
[Edited 3/3/09 13:02pm]

Exactly. My niece got her first job almost two years ago (when she was 14) - at a fast food restaurant.

I asked her, "So...how do you like the job?" She said, "It's okay, I guess. Kind of boring."

I said, "When it gets tough, just keep this in mind: You work this kind of job now...so you don't have to work it later. Learn everything you can about being a good employee, give it your best, and you'll eventually be given a chance to do something more to your liking."

Too many people these days - young people, especially - think everything should just be handed to them. I worked my share of crappy and/or low-paying jobs when I was coming up. I sucked it up in the hope that something better was out there - and that my current employer would one day give me a great reference.

i like prince. he's not without fault, but i like the majority of what he's done.

i like target. it's not without fault, but i like the majority of what target does.

prince is selling his new music at target. well, okay then.

i don't mean to be dismissive, but he could have made far worse choices for a retail distributor.

AGREED. Target is a much better choice. Better than the mother of all (retail) slave labor..(walmart).
Who cares anyway, bring on the music. I got my Target charge card ready!!!! biggrin
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

This also raises the question...how many choices did he have, really? I mean...think about it. He needs a national retailer – with plenty of brick and mortar - that sells music. How many of those still exist? Starbucks is out of the music business, for the most part. Circuit City is out of business, entirely. So is Tower Records (and they weren't in smaller markets, anyway).

So you have Target...Walmart...and Best Buy. Two of the three are based in Minneapolis. And Target probably has better saturation.

I dont believe that the average consumer will look in depth into the relationship P has contracted with Target or how bad this is for him/Bria. It will be more about "OOhh, Prince has a new CD out and it's only 12 bucks!" Whatever ethical issues Target has with their employees is bigger than Prince releasing his album through them.

An in depth critical thinking panel on the ethics of(Target) this chain store.

Should Not be in a Prince forum.

Cheap Prince CD sold on a little cardboard display next to 10-packs of Strawberry-Banana Bubalicious and X-treme Spice Dorritos?! Welcome 2 the Dawn?

WTF, Prince? Aren't we past all this? Aren't you comfortable enough in your own reputation and legend to just be able to release a CD in the few record stores left. Or maybe as a download on your cool new site? What's with jumping into the Made in China fray. Let us find you, don't come looking for us.

what happened to Prince between Rainbow Children and Musicology? It's as if he had a panic attack that no one would ever love him again. Free CD's at concerts, in newspapers, etc. Relax, dude...if it's good it'll be found.

Oh wait! Maybe that's the problem...

I think Prince linking up with Target he didn't do his homework on the moral/ethical practices of Target.

All the major retailers will follow the lead of their biggest competition by virtue of their need to stay in business. So Targets wage levels are a moot point as far as I'm concerned. Its national labor regulation that sets the bar so low for labor rights, not the companies taking advantage of it. Criticize the former first and foremost, then go after the company paving the standard. Trying to convince Target to do otherwise would be the equivalent of asking it to slowly be put out of business by a consistent underselling by a company that has way bigger pockets than it does.

And another thing that your "facts" omit is just how much Target gives back. As someone who works in the international philanthropy community I can say without hesitation that Target is among the largest charitable givers in the US per profit-margin. They give millions weekly to support local causes throughout the US (whethey be community/civil development, volunteerism, environmental, human services, social services, their grants run the gammot of critical charitable needs in this country). So blanketedly labeling them slave-drivers is kinda silly. Thats like pointing at a single politician in Washington and calling him a pawn to lobbyist... thats kinda assumed. US capitalism has never championed living-wages. This isn't Europe. Your whole argument that Prince should somehow forget the environment we live and operate in doesn't fly.

You are also engaging in brushing off unethical practices that are across the board that have not been thorougly discussed or investigated due to the fact that Target is a powerful corporation with a cabal of legal counsel. But I assure you a small business could not partake in actions like this due to the unethical matters.

Nothing would prevent anyone from coming out with a story against Target if there was ANY knowing envolvement with illegal practices anywhere in the world. No "cabal of legal counsel" that any corporation could ever muster up can do something like that in this day and age. This isn't the 1950's. The fact is, large corporations like this are forced to take allegations and any potential envolvement with potentially damaging actions or operations very seriously. They have to carefully vet all the subcontractors and vendors they work with, and precisly because it'd be all too easy to break a story with damaging evidence against them.

You also present a very blind naive dichotomy between small and big business as though small businesses are by their very nature "ethical" and big ones by nature "unethical". No factual study of business (small to large) would ever in a million years corroborate such a blind dichotomy. A business either has ethical corporate governance engrained in its operations or it doesn't. In this area, size is completely irrelevant.
Change it one more time..

i'll be interested to see exactly what versions of this is going to be available how, and from exactly where. lol

i wish target would release a special edition of the set with pics and lyrics for those of us who don't want printouts from the web site and are willing to shell out a few bucks more for a nice liner notes booklet.

but if that's the worst of my complaints, i'm doing pretty good with princey this time around. lol

I hate to say it but, Prince might be just another fat cat. A brill musician but a fat cat none the less. He's a celeb. He's Hollywood. Why would he honestly care about this? I remember an article written by a roadie who worked for some concerts in Spain during a Prince tour in the 90's, saying that he and others were provided with not the best conditions, like warm running water or even a proper place to sleep at times. If someone remembers what I'm talking about please elaborate and correct me, but it didn't seem like rights were the first thing on his mind for members of his own staff so why would he care about workers rights and slave labor for Target? Here is a more recent example of the point I'm trying to make: He's a Jehovahs Witness. In one article he was asked if he had speacial interest in Obamas election. His answer ended in him comparing his skin color to the reporter and laughing. Cut to him at the Tavis Smiley thing saying "I appreciate righteous leadership-blah, blah, blah." As a P fan I have come to learn that P is A LOT of things. One of those things may be a hypocrite. Listen to the music but if your looking for some... I dunno, something else from the man himself...Expecting something, you will most likely be disappointed. Not sure of all I'm saying. Just rambling but, there you go.

Yes but a lot of times you have people that want an actual hard copy with the book and artwork which is likely why he chose to also go the Target route.
