Possibly. When I think of it in terms of

"I'd rather listen to Planet Earth than _____"

the only Prince album that I'd put in the blank is Emancipation and I loathe that album like no other. So yeah, PE is down there pretty far. I wanted to like it, I really did. But it fucking sucks. doody

In fact, I think I'd rather listen to Carmen Electra rap over Kamasutra than listen to Planet Earth. ill

I just never liked it. Lovesexy and The Black Album are the only Princealbums I truly can't listen to at all. Most of songs are overlong and drag on forever, and I just don't like the flow of these two albums, or the individual tracks for that matter, though there are a few good ones on each.
Don't worry about it, I've never been too bothered about Dirty Mind, Controversy and *whispers* 1999.

eek eek
You thought you got off there didn't you?

Just pullin your leg. lol

But I love 1999!

I kind of disagree with this. I think when Prince is bad, hes' actually quite bad overall. Planet Earth has some of the lamest lyrics I've ever heard a talented musician write.

not his best.not his worst.it's in that realm of prince albums i don't listen to much(along with rave, chaos and disorder.musicology, batman and prince).although it kind of reminds me of come and nps in that there are some near classics(somewhere here on earth, planet earth, all the midnights in the world, guitar) but the rest is kinda so-so.i'm more interested in some of his other music right now,i've only listened to it a few times.i'm sure i'll get back around to it.the lyrics aren't that good,i'll admit.the two aforementioned "i ain't tryna be a hater" and "the main problem with war is,that nobody ever wins" are the worst but on two decent songs so i'll let them slide.3121 was a classic imo(except for incense and candles ill).i wore that one out.i can't see why no one likes it.it's the closest he's gotten to sign o the times this millineum,i think.
For all time I am with you, you are with me.

I really don't understand all the hate about the lyrics. For me Prince has never been the greatest lyricist, so I just don't see it. If you stop to think about it, there has been lyrical shit on most of his albums along the way. Obviously I'm not going to turn to anyone and say that you must love Planet Earth but I just don't see what's so wrong.

Sure , he also wrote a couple of stupid lines in his heyday but for every stupid song, you had gems like:

Ballad of Dorothy Parker

Anna Stesia

The Beautiful Ones

Computer Blue

She´s Always In My Hair

Something in the Water

Condition of the Heart

Lady Cab Driver

Let´s Go Crazy

Controversy

Money Don´t Matter 2nite

Live 4 Love

Adore

Damn U

The Sacrifice of Victor

Space

Days Of Wild

I Hate U

When U Were Mine

Party Up

17 Days

Strange Relationship

Joy In Repetition

and the list goes on and on and on.

I quite like Planet Earth, and I also enjoyed 3121 and parts of Musicology but some of the lyrics on Planet Earth are horrid. Whereas most listeners had problems with the content of the lyrics on TRC, a true masterpiece but laced with controversial lyrics, this time the lyrics are neither controversial nor creative....just bland, stupid, simple and trying too hard.

The songs are not really bad, the melodies are there and they´re nice but come on, some of those lyrics are really embarrassing, some , on the other hand, are trademark Prince and not bad at all.And some are great, just marred by a few bad lines in between that make me cringe even though the rest is quite good.

sigh All this hate towards my favorite track

His rapping is embarassing? Not in this song, not for me.
When I heard that song the first time, it had me smiling cheek2cheek... cuz I dig it when he speaks his name and when he speaks in general. Love that low, sexy voice.

Resolution is probably one of the weakest endings I've ever seen on lyrics alone... and pretty much all of the songs except for "Planet Earth" and "Chelsea Rodgers" is about him... why change the subject when it's getting good? biggrin I guess to bring it full circle... cuz Resolution does have to do with the Planet Earth concept. That along makes it a pretty tight project and I enjoy his tighter projects sometimes in comparison to the lengthier ones (i.e. Purple Rain 2 1999, Come 2 TGE)... therefore this does outdue 3121 in my book because PE feels like it has a tight storyline and every track builds up on the next beautifully.

I suppose the hating towards PE is never gonna stop. But to call it his worst is nothing short of an insult. Knowing Prince, he's probably onto a new musical project by now and he won't care too much about this one anymore ("it's ran its course, so its time for something new").
My way of expressing my support of his gifts is by listening to each album carefully and deciding where I stand, what can I do to make it shine as much as possible.

PE needs no help from me because it shines with a certain magic. I could take out Chelsea Rodgers or put PE at the end of the album, or even play thru it in reverse order... but I like it as is. In fact, love it.

I might be making too much of this. I'll most likely pay a toll for this from people who say "Prince doesn't care how you care to listen to his work as long as he gets paid." Even if that's true, doesn't stop me from getting the most out of his work.

And this is one of his best. It won't compete with classics like 1999, Purple Rain, and TGE... but it's definitely in my top 6-7 albums.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

Except for Guitar which is cool, I also enjoy listening to future baby mama, mr. goodnight and chelsea rodgers but the rest needs to be skipped.
The sadness of PE is most of the songs don't stay in your head, they are just average, not Prince worthy. And playing them over and over doesn't help, which helps with other CD's (had that a lot with Emancipation, after playing it for weeks most of it suddenly became great).

And believe me, I'm a huge Prince addict.

But it's just like parfume, everybody has got a different tast so we cannot criticise someone else for liking of disliking it. Why do people like Metalica or Opera.

Definitely not, but it's not a good album, either.

It just feels really unambitious. The lyrics sound like they were written in minutes, and a lot of the songs are really forgettable.

Still, these albums are all far worse:

Musicology
NEWS
NPS
Rave
Diamonds and Pearls

Co-sign all of that except ranking D&P alongside those shitfests. D&P had some junk on it, but there are at least 5 or 6 tunes on it that are genuinely good. What's more there's nothing on the album to make me cringe like with NPS and Rave (no, not even lame tracks like Daddy Pop and Jughead) . As for PE it's got a nice vibe, but like you said, the lyrics suck.

See, I'm not from London or the U.K.

I got it at Target for $14.99.

And it was worth every penny biggrin

One thing I have heard a few times is that none of the songs stick in your head.
In one instance, I agree with that. It was the very first listen. I know that I lloved the album. But none of the songs stuck in my head when I first listened to it. Although Guitar did kinda stick because it was so catchy. But I couldn't even remember the name of Track 9 and it took me a while to get the right title (Lion of Judah).

I didn't have access to this website when I got the album. And I'm glad. I didn't have any pre-grown/established predjuices or favoritisms of certain tracks. I took every track as I personally felt about it without any influence. And I'm glad that I got to hear it on my own before my return. Or I'd be miserable like some of you guys who seem to hate it with a passion.

Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic was flat out weird when I first heard it and none of those songs stuck at all... so I shelved it for a month b4 picking it up again. NewPower Soul was just plain... ugh, un-Prince-like for the majority of the time (but of course, it was a prince album overshadowed by the NPG's influence mad ... w/o them, at least it would be decent as a whole. I had to take out 2 songs cuz of them.)

Diamonds & Pearls, other than Jughead, is a really good album. The lyrics in some of the songs I say are on the same plane as on PE... but PE feels like continous R&B with a hint of brilliance, guitar and catchy melodies. D&P is more of a collection of diff. tastes. Whether the vibe is continuous or not, doesn't make either better or worse than the other.

But to me, there is no "better or worse"... there is only good, really good and excellent. PE is 8.9/10... just short of excellence, but brilliant enough to rank higher than a lot of the other albums I own.
