I'd love to hear the outtakes. Apparently, there were a lot more than 10 songs recorded for the project. Anybody have any info on this? Giovanni?

Not in my estimation, no. PE is a fun listen - Nothing too special, with a few standout tracks. It's more consistently good than his last few albums, which helps. Nothing remotely as cringeworthy as "Wedding Feast," "Life O' the Party," or "Get On the Boat" to be found here. The lone exception would be "Resolution," which may be the blandest, most uninspired track he's done in a long time - It's so mediocre, it can't even drag itself into "bad" territory.

The main weakness comes down to the lyrics - They just haven't been interesting in the post-Rave years, and PE doesn't offer anything to challenge that claim.

His worst efforts, to my ears, remain Newpower Soul, The Rainbow Children, and 3121.

very disappointing counterpoint (bookend) to the AWESOME title track for me.
the lyrics are actually better than the music . . . sad

but again, i say it's a good album, even within the P barometer.
i just figure he wrote those lyrics while performing a ton in Vegas.
not an inspired time for bold introspection.
i think he just wanted to get another release out w/the momentum he's got goin'.

Is this one of worst? Oh great, I have this one (still sealed).

Oh, I love PE by the way and don't know where it falls on any scale as I really have nothing to compare it to as you can see, I'm just hung up on this album and the others are still sealed. One day I will have a listen unless someone wants to buy it from me????

Definitely not, but it's not a good album, either.

It just feels really unambitious. The lyrics sound like they were written in minutes, and a lot of the songs are really forgettable.

Still, these albums are all far worse:

Musicology
NEWS
NPS
Rave
Diamonds and Pearls

I think he's upset that Prince didn't put enough funk on the album, which is actually why many folks here resent it. At the same time, some people have very little tolerance and patience for what Prince is doing now as great as it may be. They all want another "Dirty Mind" and "1999".

I personally think "Planet Earth" is some of the best stuff he's done in a while. I'm glad to hear him rock out again and bring back some of that Revolution-flavored pop of his days of yore. His reunion with the GirlBros. even made this an extra special affair. Folks here seem to have a problem with Prince turning his amp up and rocking the fuck out, I see. But who said Prince was just a one-trick pony? This just shows his creativity and versatility. He's not just about the Funk and the Soul. He can rock out like the best of them too.

So no, PE is not his worst album. It's one of his best, IMO. "NewPowerSoul" on the other hand.....

Enough? Bitch didn't put any funk on the album lol
Anyways, I don't mind the fact that he dind't make an all-funk album, I mean Musicology doesn't have too many funk tracks but I dig that album. It's much better than 3121 and Planet Earth. Planet Earth doesn't have any good tracks on it AND it includes one of the worst tracks ever, EVER, 'Mr. Goodnight'. Jesus H. Christ what a steaming pile cringeworthy dun ill ill

I just never liked it. Lovesexy and The Black Album are the only Princealbums I truly can't listen to at all. Most of songs are overlong and drag on forever, and I just don't like the flow of these two albums, or the individual tracks for that matter, though there are a few good ones on each.

You and me both.
Can't believe all the hate goin' round hrmph

I enjoy the vibe of the album so much that I think I just ignore how amateurish the lyrics are at times... I don't care, I enjoy them all the same. And a lot of people are so hard on "Mr. Goodnight", which, hands down, is my favorite. I enjoy that one the most, but I'd have to say that "Somewhere here on Earth" is his BEST on the album and probably ranks with "The Dance" as one of his current best. It shows class and sophistication at its optimum level (if you're willing to forgive/ignore the line "in this digital age, you can just page me..." -- makes no diff. to me).

I suspect that maybe "Mr. Goodnight" is a ladies-track-favorite, but it depends on what your POV is shrug To me, it feels like Prince being his charming self.

It doesn't feel dated at all (unlike the last 2 that came b4 it) and it sounds more alive than the majority of 3121 (The Word and The Dance are the best he has).

It all depends on tastes of course. But I love the PE vibe and there are few that rival that... 5-6 other albums that are stronger as a whole with stronger lyrics, etc.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

It's pretty much right in the middle for me now. I definitely liked it more at first, but time pretty quickly revealed it's got a great first half and a sucky second half. The diversity of the first run of tracks is pretty breathtaking, even though the lyrics are kinda crap. But Mr. Goodnight is unexcusable, definitely one of hi his worst ever, mostly for just being so boring. I still think the album's a hair better than 3121, mostly because it doesn't have that cold, mechanical production.

mad Even the Org bug revolts against PE. lol

What I was trying to say was:

Possibly. When I think of it in terms of

"I'd rather listen to Planet Earth than _____"

the only Prince album that I'd put in the blank is Emancipation and I loathe that album like no other. So yeah, PE is down there pretty far. I wanted to like it, I really did. But it fucking sucks. doody

In fact, I think I'd rather listen to Carmen Electra rap over Kamasutra than listen to Planet Earth. ill

Please ... PE is not even close to being his worse album. Sorry, but that title is taken by NPS hands down followed closely by Rave. But, I always cut the man some slack on NPS due the circumstances it was written and released under.

I no longer look at releases as collections of songs.

I see them as parts of an artist's timeline. I pick what I like from each release and add it to my iPod's collection.

At the end of the day, I have a body of work. But no albums.

I cant distiguish between these three "comeback" albums. Musicology and 3121 are more "R&B", PE is more "pop" but overall they are about the same. Some good songs, maybe one "great" song on each and some real clunkers on each.

We should all just admit he's been treading water since Gold/Emancipation.

Well I like Planet Earth, it's a pretty good album,I really liked 3121, I loved a lot of the songs on it, especially 'Love'; and I absolutely hated 'Musicology', it had some good songs on it, but I didn't like it. I'm a pretty new Prince fan, I've only heard about 8-9 of his albums, so I'm not prepared to say any of these are his worst albums, but out of the last three...it is definitely 'Musicology' for me. But Planet Earth is good.
Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!
