me too. i just wish he'd let go of other people's expecations of what a prince album should be even more than he has on the album we got now and just go full on folky, 60's songwriter. you can just tell from lots of his songs that he totally has a soft spot for that type of stuff but somehow he always put up only one or at most 2 of those type songs on an album, in the middle of some hard funk or rock. i'm still convinced that some day we will get prince's very own Joni Mitchell-ish folky singer songwriter album stuff on ATWIAD, The Truth, ONA and some occasional tracks came very close but there's not really an album where he goes that way all out. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Reminds me of a stage musical song. I can imagine some guy over acting this song.

I don't hear Joni Mitchell in this. In fact I was trying to figure out just what would inspire him to write something like this?

There's a part of the song that reminds me of "Morning Papers" melody wise, though I like this song much better than that one. 7/10 " A mind changed against its will, is of the same opinion still"

A wonderfully catchy little tune, I just wish it was longer...

Like, where it ends could be the start of a b-section.

Any reviewers who deemed this one of the 'worst' Prince-songs at the French listening sessions were full of ... .
This is a beautiful, sublime song. A ray of sunshine, reminiscent but not deriative of 'Starfish & Coffee'.

I like the melody, and have no problem with the fun style - he's been addopting this for years so its nice to see it make a recurrance. My problem is his singing - its awful - very strained. Actually it reminds me of Pearls B4 Swine, which i think its slightly better.

wonderful track, just wish he would venture out of the r&b area and more into something like this... maybe not quite like this, but this is a great track

I like this track!!! 8/10
It could have been placed else where on the album as I kind of forget about it after I start groving to Chelsea Rogers. But I always go back to give it another listen! [Edited 7/16/07 5:57am] One minute they want peace……
Then do everything to make it go away.

Nice song, my only complaint about it is that it's too short. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

"prickly fingered scallywags who masquerade as friends"
That line makes me smile. I like this song. I like the way it sounds so throwaway. fun track, beautiful melody I'm testing postive 4 the funk

I like it.
It sounds free, and he sounds comfortable using that voice again. It also fits and sits well on the album. "He's a musician's musician..."

This is this album's equivalent of 'Tangerine' on 'Rave'.
And imo, both are lovely, intriguing miniatures.

this is the best i can come up with right now: Because I turn my eye toward u Because I seek ur hand Every other woman envies u And me every other man And as the circle of jealousy Is coming round again Those prickly-fingered scallywags that masquerade as friends make a promise this very night that they will no longer pose a threat 2 either one of us and let the chapter close 4 all the midnights in the world This one will serve us better If u choose to be my girl Like Zuzu's petals, a wonderful life (*) The 2 of us shall lead The children of the future All the spiritual food they need The secrets that the ones b4 With grace have come and shown 2gether with love 4 one another We shall make them known Remember love, our happy days Are numbered like grains of sand That and 12 times evermore If I could be your man (??) 2 rubies, crystals and black pearls I’d trade them all just to spend with u All the midnights in the world All the midnights in the world (*) from the film, "It's a Wonderful Life". In the film, protagonist George Bailey (James Stewart) has a daughter called Zuzu. As order is restored and George is attempting to prove to himself that he indeed exists, he reaches into his pocket and finds the flower petals his daughter gave to him. On finding the floral remnants, George triumphantly shouts, "Zuzu's petals!" .. [Edited 7/16/07 14:55pm] and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I think it's easily the most heartfelt track on the whole CD, and is my favorite thus far! I really love the "Zuzu's petals" reference! How original! Who else would have thought of that besides P? I can't think of anyone.

Quite possibly my favorite song on the album. Honestly.
Really puzzled about the disdain for this song. Simple, beautiful melody, with some of best lyrics I've heard from him in years. Once again I really feel that if this was an older unreleased song it would be on everyone's favorite list. He is exactly who we thought he was

This song reminds me greatly of something that could have been recorded during the I'll Do Anything sessions and wouldn't have sounded out of place on The Vault at all, I don't think.

I like it when Prince does sweet, short songs like "Starfish and Coffee" and "Tangerine". I'm not crazy about the vocal delivery here. The transitions between his natural tone and the falsetto aren't so smooth to my ears. That said, I'm glad to hear Prince trying this kind of song again, and I bet it will grow on me, as I've only listened to it once. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!
