wonderful track, just wish he would venture out of the r&b area and more into something like this... maybe not quite like this, but this is a great track

Yeah, you're right. Prince could do a full album or two of this kind of obscure music, but then we'd have all the resident "Prince should do R&B" fans complain about how Prince is doing this kooky music. That's part of the reason Prince got rid of Wendy and Lisa, because after ATWIAD and Parade, many Prince fans thought he was no longer doing "black music." Such a shame.

Wait, couldn't "Starfish & Coffee" be considered Prince doing "Sesame Street" as well? Yet, that particular song is (in most cases) celebrated. Why is that?

Again, I think "Midnights" is one of those tunes that won't get it's just due by those critical of it until years down the line. It's a shame though...because IMO, it's Prince at his best!

It's like that because no matter what Prince releases these days some people are gonna bitch and moan because they think it's cool to not like Prince's new stuff.

This is a fantastic song, that, if it was to have been on The Dream Factory, 99% of people on here would fuckin' love it.

That's a very good point! I've noticed that some people seem not to like his new stuff because it is...well...new stuff (and not shit he recorderd in the 80's). I was joking with someone recently that if he took one of his 80's songs from the vault...one that nobody had ever heard...and released it as "new music" today, there'd be those who complain that it's not as good as his 80's stuff... rolleyes

The guys just can't seem to win with some people!

Starts off bad with Prince's horrid vocal and the jarring piano but gets
better towards the ( thankfully short ) ending . Worst track on the album
though easily , and not even close to the brilliance of Tangerine which a few
people are comparing it too ( although Tangerine is a lot simpler musically
and sung delightfully of course ) .
Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

Sorry, but all around this is just a much better song than Tangerine.

sad Lyrics, please.....

this is the best i can come up with right now:

Because I turn my eye toward u
Because I seek ur hand
Every other woman envies u
And me every other man

And as the circle of jealousy
Is coming round again
Those prickly-fingered scallywags
that masquerade as friends

make a promise this very night
that they will no longer pose
a threat 2 either one of us
and let the chapter close

4 all the midnights in the world
This one will serve us better
If u choose to be my girl

Like Zuzu's petals, a wonderful life (*)
The 2 of us shall lead
The children of the future
All the spiritual food they need

The secrets that the ones b4
With grace have come and shown
2gether with love 4 one another
We shall make them known

Remember love, our happy days
Are numbered like grains of sand
That and 12 times evermore
If I could be your man

(??) 2 rubies, crystals and black pearls
I’d trade them all just to spend with u
All the midnights in the world
All the midnights in the world

(*)
from the film, "It's a Wonderful Life". In the film, protagonist George Bailey (James Stewart) has a daughter called Zuzu. As order is restored and George is attempting to prove to himself that he indeed exists, he reaches into his pocket and finds the flower petals his daughter gave to him. On finding the floral remnants, George triumphantly shouts, "Zuzu's petals!"

Oh it's so gorgeous, one of the best on the album, which is a really great album all things considered.

The lyrics are great, which is what this album is lacking.

I'm really hoping W+L stick around for the next, the world needs another quirky irreverent Prince album

I surely wasn't feeling it at first, but then I learned the music and I couldn't avoid its appeal.

Prince hasn't written many segue tracks this effective. It's like taking a trip back beneath the "Cherry Moon" or uncovering "Starfish" in one of your lunch cases.

Too saccharine for some, for sure, but sugar is a part of a balanced diet.

But no sweet tooth here, as this song makes its connection and then dissolves like so much cotton candy.

I'm liking this one, although I can see why some might think it's too sugary sweet.

Not so keen on the slower 'All_the_midnights_' parts, but the faster rise and fall of the verses, eg 'Make a promise...This very night...' etc are gorgeous.

Each one seems to kick in a little bit more - I almost wish there was one more tht then soared away somewhere really great.

But although I'm not so fussed by the slower chorus, it works insomuch as it creates the contrast with the verses really well.

I think this might be the worst song Prince has ever released -- I mean that literally, not as hyperbole. It makes the track that comes before it sound good -- and that's saying something. Can't find anything to praise... derivative melody, terrible vocal performance, poor choice of sounds, rote arrangement, uninspired playing, embarassing lyrics... wow.

Amazing how quickly the album comes unraveled after starting off with five strong tracks... 2 clunkers in a row with this one really plumbing new depths.

Such a great feel good song. Love the scallywags line.

Sounds like it could have been on a Badly Draw Boy album, especially One Plus One.

So if you like this I suggest you check that out.

This song is fan-fuckin'-tastic!

Such a beautiful little simple melody along with some of the best lyrics he's written in years.

For all you overly nostalgic 80's only Prince lovers this track SHOULD be right up your alley.

This song could have easily fit right in on The Dream Factory.

It's really a shame most people aren't gonna give this song a chance.
