I agree with Prince and NPG. Copyrights r HOLY so Prince had the complete right 2 allow or deny the use of pictures and other things.

Princefams aint a so friendly and nice site, so I dont mind whats going on.

I could understand it if people were making money off of the photos/images, since they are copyrighted, but what is the harm of using them simply for discussion and fan purposes? It's like movies- they're copyrighted and have FBI warnings but everybody dubs, videotapes, copies them at home for their own use. No cash is being made off of them. I'm all for the ownership of intellectual property but it seems some sort of balance and common sense is lacking in some cases.

If he holds back anything which was previously free for all it will, at some point, become more sought after. Then he can put a price on it and reap the rewards. I think I can see some kind of sense to his actions, even if they are ultimarely self-destructive, But I can't agree with him to any degree.

From what I understand the lifetime membership was valid only when the website is active, and they did stop taking membership money weeks before it closed (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I am quite sure Prince's legal department look at the obligation to those who paid the $25, so I don't think he's required to issue a refund. Again, someone with a legal background can correct me.

As far as your second paragraph, I respect people who take the stand and literally be done with Prince. I never understood why folks continue to support him when they despise him. That's just my opinion. No matter how good the music is, I would never support a musician who I feel treats fans like shit. (I don't believe that at all, I'm just repeating what I've read in the past few days). I don't understand why people just can't leave Prince world totally and go and devote time to other artists who do things the way they think they should, rather than devote time daily talking about a man one no longer respects. That's just me.
[Edited 12/30/06 23:07pm]

Stand corrected...the site took $$ days before it closed. (I don't remember so I'll leave it at that.
Lifetime membership; unless it closes... that's an oxymoron.
The same attorneys protecting Prince's copyrights are the same who put the fine print in the website. No responsibility for anything. Actually, if they did that, that means that are responsible.

I'm usually in GD. Responding to the forum to support the site. Not here to argue with the cheerleaders.

My statement was based on your admission here and in the Concert forum that you were planning a trip to see Prince. Why are you going to see Prince, in Vegas of all places which cost alot more momeny, when you think his treatment of fans is unfavorable? that's all i'm saying. it's just a practice I don't understand. just be done with Price altogether if its that bad.

We are quite happy to deny other people their freedom, when they have stolen something of ours. Think of this like someone stealing a picture of you on the wall from your house and then doing what they want with it, you'd want to 'control' them to stop, wouldn't you? Okay, you can argue that online media isn't the same thing, but for some people whose living is fairly insubstantient things such as music, video, graphics and photos, ie. intellectually copyrighted things that are easily duplicated, then theft/making a stand over ownership of images, etc can be crucially important.

At the end of the day, no one is denying anyone their freedom to express themselves, as long as they aren't doing anything illegal. You can quite easily have a website about Prince as long as you follow certain legal rules. He can't touch you if you do that.

People moan about Prince being a control freak, yet it is this same controlling manner that meant he has been allowed to produce his own albums from the beginning and given him the freedom to follow his creative impulses and go against the trends, ie be the amazingly unique individual he is that actually makes people want to make websites discussing him!

Whatever you might think of Prince's decision, metalorange is right. Prince has the right to control the use of his likemess. While I believe such usage enhances his "goodwill" and marketability in some ways, Prince has the legal right to do so.

Well-said and I agreed with your post and they are very insightful as usual. As for me, I think Prince isn't using his head of the advantages of how his images and unauthorized material can be for example introducing new fans without his effort but still he has a right to control his images and music. But in the end I am going to continue to support him as an artist. In my perspective, he has to do something very offensive for me no longer support him. As a supporter of Prince for over 15 years, it was about the art and music he produces. I never was into his personal life or the like. Same goes the other celebrities that I like, I as of now Im supportive their art and creation without being too personal attach to them (not always been the case)because if you do then you are asking for a heartache. Prince always been this way for years, and I don't see a change anytime soon.

I been asking myself this though: I noticed that some of the pictures that was taken by indie photographers on that Princefams gallery aren't they the copyright owners and therefore Prince doesn't have too much to go on in court? Just like some other celebrities can't sue photographers for taking public pictures of them? What about the picture galleries that I be seeing of him on sites like Corbis, Gettyimages, and Wireimage why he haven't gone after them even if they are taken by indie photographers as well? Unlike those commerical picture sites that I mentioned, at least Princefams, they did a kickass and thankless job with the gallery and not making a profit. I am not trying to generate some ideas though of Prince should go after the big commerical companies as well but...

Prince have always being a bully trying to sue people who he knows doesn't have the financial means to defend themselves in court. Despite Prince is all about the music too, I will do my part to support the few fanbased sites that he have left in case his next outrageous tactic is threat to sue for the negative comments or comments that he doesn't like. lol

If a person is famous like Prince u ppl can do what they wanna (kinda) with ur picture. If u r a public person u must accept u wont have the privacy of a "common" person. Is it the same in USA?

I am suprised no one has said it yet but there needs to be a SERIOUS boycott going on here.

There are enough resources "legit and not-so-legit" out there where we (fans) technically never have to pay his ungrateful ass another solitary dime and STILL be knee deep in new Prince music, memorabilia etc.

How is he gonna fill seats at his shows? The general public could not care less about Prince and he knowwwwws that. He is a HAS-BEEN as far as folks in general are concerned. That;s why he is in Vegas in the first damned place.

90% of the people that pay good money to see his ass are diehard fans that have seen his shit hundreds of times. We are this bastards MAIN source of income.

This is the ONLY really famous artist that has shitted on his fans as much as this and still gets dedicated fans throwing money at him left and right.

And I mean EVERYBODY. Fuck a petition. Everybody that signed that petition (including myself) on princefams.com needs to now put their wallets on lock-down when it comes to Prince. I ain't even saying stop buying his shit. I am say don't buy it from HIM. dig?

Madonna does not do this shit to her fans
Janet Jackson does not do this shit
Michael Jackson never did this shit
Mariah Carey does not do this shit
Beyonce/Destiny's Child never did this shit.

Petitions and all that do not work on Prince. He only understands MONEY so don't give his ass amy more.
I sure as hell won't.

Princefams.com does not make money off of him. They don't use him for profit like those ass-licking watch dogs he has scouring the 'net for him. Princefams.com promoted his ass 24/7 FOR FREE, just as all other fansites. Rounding up people to support his ass and for what? So he could turn around and pull this shit again. AGAIN!

OMG! I was gonna say the same thing. When P put out Rave he was all nice and humble on Jay Leno too. Now he's got money again, he's back to his old tricks. Look, we're not talking about people stealing music for free off the Internet. We're talking about photos that the photographers got paid for, videos? televisions shows? Videos are promotion for the artist to sell their records. All you have to do is record them directly from VH1 and MTV so how is a fan putting these on their website ruining him? Heck, I saw Prince on a famsite on Jay Leno and I actually went and bought his album after that. So he better be glad his fans are posting his photos and his videos and his television appearances. Are do we have to wait until he gets low on cash again?

Nevermind this right and wrong lark! Prince is beyond good and evil. He's always talking from a higher ground. Now apparently he doesn't believe in this higher ground himself. This most recent action of his, is the first real sign that he may be spiritually washed up, Well this and the vegas move are the first two signs. I hope this is not the case, ahh but then again, what of it?

There is a such thing as fair use, which allows the use of copyrighted material for discussion, critiqueing, etc. As long as they are not selling the photos, I don't see how using them in the manner that PrinceFams or any other Prince fan website is causing him to lose money. Right. There may be someone actually threatening Prince and/or the NPG, for sites not crediting photographers and other owners of media attainable on the internet. We live in a capitalist country, unfortunately not all people do work for the sake of kindness or fanhood.

I heard there was a video spoof made over there that was offensive and may have sparked the video section in getting shutdown. I asked over at HQ but nobody responded. Does anyone know if this was true?

It's not illegal to do a video spoof that's unflattering. If that were the case, shows like SNL would have been history a long time ago.
