it´s a shame even from a marketing point of view. If a site isn´t earning money on him, why should it be threatened? It´s just a community. Youtube videos are great for people to see his talent as a live performer.

I'd like to see copies of what exactly was sent to the princefams folks... they seem like good people, obviously hoping to promote Prince and his endeavors via their site, and running ANY fansite is a ton of fairly thankless work. It's tricky, though, if there was something in particular (copyright offenses for example) that are within Prince's right to argue about, that should be respected.

Now, generally speaking, I think he's dead wrong from a practical, business, marketing, and even moral standpoint to attack fans and sites they put blood, sweat, tears, and money into maintianing, as he is likely the greatest benefactor of those efforts and expenditures, but we can't ignore legitimate legal requests. Even challenging illegitimate ones isn't always successful, if Prince is willing to pay big bucks to get "better" lawyers (e.x., the Uptown case).

If I understand correctly (and I'm not sure I do), the princefams folks were previously responsible for putting some video material Prince arguably owned copyright to, on YouTube and linking to it from their site--and were asked to remove it, and did comply with the request. I'm not sure the nature of this subsequent request but as I said, I'd like to know more details.

No matter what, it's never boring in Prince-fan-land, especially if you try to "help" the community. Let's see what happens...

Ben,

You've done the greatest thing by creating this website. Actually, I became a fan through Prince.org. I wasn't really a fan before being on this website. I've been on it since 2002 and met a tremendous amount of people: Vi, Minneapolis Funk, Psychodelicide, ..and many more who have been around for so long.
I'll do anything I can to back you up. You can sure count on me.

LOVE

Did anyone see the youtube video? Perhaps it was offensive to Prince and now he's retaliating against the site. hrmph

I've always felt Prince should PAY fan sites for all the free advertising he gets. Whether he has a comeback or a lull in his career, sites like this keep interest in his music going. Movies too, only in a humorous way, changing dialog and making fun of him.(WTF? if he can't laugh at himself once in a while he may as well be in the grave) I, for one, have purchased movies, concert videos, and CD's as a result of this site. When there's debate about his music, if I don't have it, I seek it out, and whip out the credit card. I calculate, I've spent over $300 dollars the past 10 months on Prince products. Replacing albumes I hadn't bothered to replace included. Buying the movies because of fun stuff orgers did with them.
With his misguided business instinct (does anyone know if tickets are for sale for Jan shows starting with NEXT WEEKEND or the following??) he should be more appreciative.
When he had a myspace account I sent him a message stating he needs to start paying for the free advertising, the cheap ass.

I've written this on my blog about this situation:

Here's my opinion on the current Prince situation:

The entire cease and desist phenomenon is strange. Prince is alienating his fans. We are the ones that buy his records, even when they are not good (Rave in2..), that became members of the npgmc and now have wma files that don't work, that listen to his music 24/7 and defend the guy from all those nasty jokes.

But why this harrassing towards fan sites. Posting a few pictures (as rarer as they are), videos (for younger fans it's a treat) is not stealing money from Mr. Nelson. So we listen to bootlegs, Mr. Nelson, but some of us even skip a day of work, just to be the first to buy your music the day it's released.

It's called promotion and congregation of fans, Mr. Nelson. Your lack of vision is contrary to your musical genius.

You call us "fams", Prince, but sometimes we feel like stepchildren of the great Paisley God...

Take the example of your 80's peer, Madonna. As far as I know she hasn't sued any website because of leaks of some material from the photo session of COADF or the various studio versions of songs performed in tour. Neither did she made efforts to remove material from youtube.

I know that in the end of day, I will always buy your stuff, even if it's your singing in the shower with Mayté's finger cymbal...

What if the industry never gets its footing again? and what if artists have to look for sponsors to carry them?

This isn't far from being a reality. If it does become the way of the future, all content will be branded and free to distribute, anyway. This will even be encouraged.

But maybe no one will want to.

I love P. I'll always buy his music and come see the show when he's in town. But this is another stupid move. He seems almost hell bent on self-destructing his career if this is the way that he continuosly treats his fans.

He might be able to play a bass guitar like nobody else, but his business sense is waaaaay off.

The thing is (in the UK) - if you don't protect your copyright, you lose it. And there's good reasons for not posting other people's photos. Read http://www.theregister.co...copyright/ for more. Still, I'm not sure Prince couldn't just license the stuff he actually owns.

Imperator

I've been readin' about these problems over the last days and I must confess that I don't quite understand what's happening. The people that are complaining are a little vague! Can somebody publish a mail, letter or whatsoever that demands that those pics are taking off these sites?

Who is forcing them to do it? Prince? His management? A third party? I can hardly believe that you can not place an albumcover on a site.

Now what's happening is that a lot of people are placing copyrighted pics and videos (YouTube and others) without the permission of the artist himself or his company. Maybe some of them want to put an end on all this since they consider that as illegal downloading? I know that Don Cornelius' company is axing all Soul Train vids on YouTube right now because of the same reason.

Maybe that is the reason behind all this? Can somebody post more (legal) details on this subject?

Maybe we should know all the facts before we judge on somebody.

clapping I would love to see the letter for myself.

My thoughts about all of this is first, there is no solidarity amongst websites. We're all too busy trying to say one is better than the other. Talking about people behind their backs, yada yada. Second, there was a person on this site that used my picture without my permission. That was not cool and I am not understanding why we want something from a person that we would not want someone to do to us. I do not care that he is a public figure, if he asks, why not comply with that? Next, I will never understand in twelve lifetimes why people say really fucked up things about Prince here and abroad and keep coming back for more. And lastly, why do people keep acting brand new? Is there anyone left in Prince fanworld that doesn't know how he feels about unauthorized use of his image or videos?

Prince simply does not get it...

His priorities are all out of whack.

Shame that he seems oblivious to the damage he has done, and continues to do to his loyal fanbase with these overzealous attacks on sites. I understand guarding what is yours, but Prince has no sense of degrees, when it comes to who he attacks; no sense of nuance.

For all the "pioneering" he is said to have done with the Internet, I think he's blown so many oportunities to strengthen his legacy and to build a connection with people that have supported him. If he gave fans a fraction of what they want, these other sites would not seem as threatening as they do to him, because his fans would come to him directly, but he can't see that anymore.

With all the promise upon his split with WB, and all the "free the music" rhetoric, Prince has failed to deliver in Cyberspace, and these legal wranglings are more proof of that.

A real shame...

Stymie, you must have dug into my head cause these are the questions that have been rolling in my head since last night when I heard about this. This should not be new to anyone who's been a fan for at least 10 years now. This is business as usual but Prince will always be seen as the bad guy in all of this. Even when he tries to do something great for us, people here and on all the other Prince fansites rip him to shreads. Some of the "fans" haven't liked a Prince album since 1988 or 1995 and yet they come here to bitch and moan and "hope" the next albums any good when they know full well they'll hate it as much as they hated the last CD. Whatever. I'm amazed he even bothers with us sometimes.
