My first reaction to the news that he'd be doing the half time show was, "WHY am I NOT excited about this?" neutral

He needs to get me excited again, he hasn't done so in a while lol Perhaps I should book a flight to Vegas hmm

biggrin I "LOVE' this commercial. biggrin lol
God doesn't just tells me how much he "LOVE's" me, God shows me how much he "LOVE's" me. Both telling and showing "LOVE" means to "LOVE". They go hand in hand. You can't have one with out the other. Something is spoken, then followed by an action. That is

haha. now he's acting all "what? raspberry beret? i don't play that shit"
and come the superbowl all we'll hear is him busting out that tired old,
overplayed medley of "take me with you/rapsberry beret" followed by some
chords of purple rain before he goes into "let's go crazy".

the only thing missing from this commercial is an exec saying "perhaps u
could say that you will perform these songs for the very last time durin
the superbowl half time"

i can see them pitching this commercial to prince and saying "we're basically going to show people how hard it is to be you, and how everyone wants you to be their hitmaking monkey and how put upon you are" and i can see prince doing a happy little spin and yelling "oh ready aim FIYAH - I'LL DO IT! because, you know, he ends every sentence in "owwah". nod

Prince to perform at Super Bowl halftime

NEW YORK (Dec. 10, 2006) -- McCartney, Jagger and now Prince.

For the third year in a row, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act will headline the Super Bowl halftime entertainment. This time it's Prince.

The Purple One, winner of six Grammy Awards and nominated for five more this year, will play at the game in Miami on Feb. 4.

The Super Bowl, which will be televised by CBS, is annually television's highest rated show. An estimated 141 million people watched last year's game between Pittsburgh and Seattle.

The Rolling Stones headlined the halftime show for that Super Bowl, and two years ago it was Paul McCartney.

The NFL has tended to take a more cautious approach since Janet Jackson's widely criticized "wardrobe malfunction" at halftime of the 2004 game. That game also was televised by CBS.

Last year, Mick Jagger's microphone was silenced as he sang sexually suggestive lyrics in a couple of songs the Stones performed.

Prince gained attention early his career with raunchy lyrics and racy performances, but has toned down his act somewhat in recent years.

woo hoo! that commercial gave me goosebumps!
this is a MASS appeal preformance so OFCOUSE he's gonna do mostly hits! anyone who thinks otherwise is nuts
seems the commercial is leading us to believe it will be guitar oriented and I do believe that's the correct direction with this performance.
hmmm I wonder what songs he'll perform? How long is the half time show? anyone know? 20 minutes? 30? less? more?

I think it would be so cool if Prince did something controversial. Fuck this JW crap. I will always know Prince as that skinny mothafucka with the high voice and he's always been the baddest mutha in the music industry. I hope he gets up there does something real dirty and sexual. Imagine if he did Erotic City. Shit that'd be awesome.

If we cannot make babies
Maybe we can make some time
*Beep* so pretty you and me
Erotic City come alive
We could *beep* in to the dawn
Making love til' cherry's gone
Erotic city can't you see
*Beep* so pretty you and me

Fuck yeh, that'd be awesome! That'd keep the guy on the beeper busy. Shit would hit the fan if Prince did that.

At the superbowl, I think Prince will play:

Let's Go Crazy (yes and everyone will be doing that on Superbowl night
when Prince starts playing dancing jig )
Kiss
U Got the Look
Johnny B. Good (This song will rock the crowd like it did at Club 3121)
and end in either
Purple Rain (because more than likely the masses expect to hear that)
or something new like Get on the Boat (w/Sheila E and Maceo)
[Edited 12/11/06 7:54am]

These choices only because he'll be playing for the masses, and they relate more to his classics, other than his usual fan base where we keep up with classics and new stuff.

How about Automatic and have a stage set just like the video and perform it just like the video. That would top Janet's boob for sure.

I've never seen that video, but since Prince has changed, he will keep it clean for sure, especially if it's the Superbowl, and that's a good thing, especially with kids watching the superbowl with their parents.

Is anyone else a little worried about the reaction Prince is going to get? I bet the performance will be great, but aren't Superbowl fans usually hyper-masculine and rowdy? Don't most macho guys think Prince is a bit... well... 'gay'?

I think there will be many who think "huh" whofarted when they hear Prince is playing but....those will most likely be the ones most blown away by his performance. biggrin
you wouldn't think Justin and Janet were typical football fan type music either ...maybe that's why they resorted to such tactics....shrug

No, not really. They'll know he's going to perform well before they get there with all the advertisements that will be around. I don't think Prince cares about the rumors. Apparently he's been dealing with those kind of rumors for so many years, that it's obvious "rumors and gossip" is not a priority on his "Agenda of the Day". What the superbowl fans will get is a dose of the Prince of today. and will be partying it up at the superbowl!! dancing jig

Watchthemfall....do you know that the type of guys you describe as "hyper-masculine rowdy macho type" doesn't dismiss the fact that they could be gay? Especially in these days and times. wink

I can see your point.

And yes, Prince is very very very gay.

But he's a top notch performer and known for making people talk about his performances for days and days afterwords. If he does it right he walk out of this guaranteeing his next album would be a hit album.

I mean, Michael Jackson is the biggest queen of them all and his performance was well received.

Yes indeed. He will garner many new fans and much respect from the audience.
It's about the music and the entertainment ...and Prince knows how to play the music and he knows how to entertain.
So...how's everybody doing? smile

I don't think the advert is saying he won't play the hits, just that there won't be any gimmicky add-ons to it. I suspect he will play something like the beginning of the Musicology concerts - Let's Go Crazy/Baby I'm A Star/When Doves Cry/Raspberry Beret/Kiss/Purple Rain something like that. I think the show is only about 20 minutes long, so a medley of hits with only snippets of each, which would be a shame, the longer versions are always better.

The thing is, you just know half the fans on here and other fansites are going to be having a go at him for doing the hits, but really it is expected at these type of occasions. I think it is a forlorn hope at best he do some lesser known songs.

If it was a general football game during the regular season, then, yeah...his act might not "fit" in.

But the Superbowl is bigger than football (if that makes any sense). It's practically a national holiday. People who never watch football will tune in to the Superbowl just for the commercials and/or just for the half-time show.

As for the hyper-masculine element, even those who think he's gay give him big props for having "great taste in women". Hell, half of 'em remember getting some action by throwing on a Prince tune or two while in the back seat of their parent's car, so they owe him some respect.

As long as he rocks it, they won't have any problem with the performance. Typical comment from these guys the next morning will be, "Wow! I always thought he was gay, but man can he play the guitar! Who knew?!?!"
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.
