The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Shorty said: jone70 said: Yes, a bit harsh perhaps, but I do actually have an MA in Contemporary Art history and took an entire seminar on Picasso from Rosalind Krauss who is one of the most influential art historians and post-modern theorists of the late 20th century (plus she wrote an entire book on Picasso: The Picasso Papers)...so I'm not making that statement in a vacuum... (not trying to sound snotty, but you did sort of ask.) But to look at it another way, even Picasso's suckiest later work is still better than a lot of other artists' best works. I do like early Picasso, but the later stuff (I'm talking 50s and 60s)--not so good. And again--I don't think Prince's career is that comparable to Picasso's except for the fact that they are geniuses in their respective arts. cube that edit [Edited 7/25/06 10:11am] well, It's great you do have a background in art to say such things. I guess I just wouldn't feel comfortable saying anyone's "art" sucked. To me, art is a personal thing..but..to each their own I suppose. It's a pretty documented universal belief that his later artwork was very subpar. SNL even did a skit with Jon Lovitz playing Picasso in his later life scribbling out art screaming "I am Picasso".

To me, art is a personal thing..but..to each their own I suppose. True, but when you put your art out there and make a career of it you have to expect criticism. If the art is so personal that you can't take criticism of it, maybe that's one piece that doesn't go to the gallery/museum. Also ironic that I'm getting jumped on by DTNDTS for critiquing Picasso when this whole website is full of "armchair quarterbacks" that are merciless when it comes to critiquing Prince's career. I'm a huge Prince fan...I haven't said a single thing against him on this thread. In general, I'm pretty supportive of Prince's music/decisions. I only pointed out that in my professional opinion, Picasso's later work is extremely weak (especially when compared to his earlier oeuvre). Anyway, enough of the art discussion in the superbowl thread...I don't want to be the reason the thread gets locked. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

The reason it doesn't excite you is because you KNOW that he's either going to do Purple Rain (and ruin it with blatant preaching), Let's Go Crazy (a solo and a lame "GO, GO, GO!" chorus) and/or one of the new songs that no one will know. Seems like whenever he performs for the masses on TV, he reverts to the same couple of songs to appease everyone. That's good for TV, but that's why WE hardcore fans don't get too excited. I'm glad he's doing it though. Personally, I'd like to see him do a rippin' version of Star Spangled Banner or America The Beautiful. Mix it up, then if it's well-received he could release that as a single. I guess so... he's been really coasting on his tv gigs lately. The only one that stands out is Fury on SNL

Wait a damn minute...you mean to tell me that this little indie MOFO
is getting asked EVERY year to do the SB and Grammy's... As much as I think of Prince...I think I've underestimated him... Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I agree with u. Whats consider now being a sell out??? Superbowl is but saturday night live is not?? When it comes right down 2 it he's just performing in front of a large audience (like he has since 1978 or so) I'm going to watch it and add it to my prince tv video collection.

Ok, lovemachine you got me. I guess I shouldn't have said.."I wouldn't feel comfortable saying anyone's art, sucked" Just legendary artists such as Picasso or those I feel are in that category. How's this for judgment...I don't think most movies, tv shows, and singers fall into that "art" category...sure they are considered..Art but...In my opinion they don't compare, well, not until they reach a certain level. I think there's a big difference in saying something like no, I didn't like that movie, song, or TV show and saying their work sucks. but hey...that's just me, you don't have to agree with me love. "not a fan" yeah...ok

I never really wanted him to do this. Every year, EVERYONE trashes the halftime show. No matter who it is, they either lip sync, cheese it up or they are called sell-outs. It's a no-win situation. I just don't want my man to down like that. ---------------------------------
