This just in from MTV.com...

For the past five weeks, the "High School Musical" phenomenon has made its home in the top 10, while big-name artists sit back and watch as tracks from the children's TV movie crush high-charting hopes. Four weeks ago, "High School Musical" hit #1 after selling 101,000 copies (see "What Is 'High School Musical' And How Did It Get To #1?"). Since then, the disc has hovered in the #2 and #3 spots. According to the latest SoundScan figures, the soundtrack will return to #1 on next week's Billboard chart after logging 142,000-plus scans last week. Total sales of the disc are currently at 811,000.

The chart they mean is the current chart- the one just prior to next week's when Prince will make his debut...

Oh don't scare me like that. We can't have that High School Bullshit stay at #1. Prince has to top that shit.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

E-40 Gets Schooled As Teen 'Musical' Reclaims Billboard #1

Bay Area rapper opens at #3; bonus tracks put Fall Out Boy back in top 10.

After seemingly coming from out of nowhere just over two months ago, "High School Musical" has emerged as the surprise hit of 2006. The soundtrack to the Disney Channel original movie debuted at #143 on Billboard's albums chart after selling 5,000 copies. The following week, it skyrocketed to the #58 spot, selling close to 13,000 copies — but the climb didn't end there.

so when do these charts get released? i don't understand all this talk
about Prince charting either this week or next week?

my guess would be the chart comes out on saturday, right? and if so, I
would assume that Prince's album, no matter if released on tuesday or
even on thursday, would be counted for the very next chart, no matter
how many days after the release of the album.

the way some of you tell it, prince's album will be on sale, counting
numbers for more than 7 days before it will count toward the chart, a
system that doesn't sound fair.

confuse

whatever, i still think it would be great if he gets to number 1 this
time round. hopefully he'll get back to releasing weird indi shit on
his website sometime soon though lol.

For folks who care...The US SoundScan charts are released on Wednesdays...What folks have been talking about is the chart-watching site Hits Daily Double, which is usually very aaccurate in its chart projections....They are the ones projecting Prince to be no. next week....Who knows...anything can happen...We will see, but it looks positive...

Interesting.... in my opinion The Rainbow Children is one of the top 5 Prince records, yet it only reached 109 on the charts..... I am happy Prince is getting some chart action again but sometimes I wonder about these "charts".

The low chart placing for 'The Rainbow Children' is because that album was released independently. It didn't get the benefit of a huge promotional blitz that major labels can provide. The same with 'N.E.W.S.' which didn't even chart if I remember correctly.

Low chart placement does not equate to a bad album. Nor does high chart placement equate to a good album.

If 3121 makes #1, it will be excellent because it will be an example of a FANTASTIC RECORD also having substantial commercial success. Would it be a success if it made the Top 5 and not #1? Of course, but the added publicity of #1 would be a huge help to Prince's overall stature, IMHO. For him to come back after all this time and hit #1 again would be fantastic.

Obviously, the SNL performance is what is selling the album, since Prince's best asset has been his live performance, and that one was a monster. He has been away for a while too, and that has made people hungry for his next record. I guess Warner was right after all. To sell an album proper, you do have to wait a few years between albums, for proper selling potential, not that I care about how much it sells, since to me, it is more about quality, less about sales. I don't get a cut from the album, so who gives a shit.

His lack of radio play has helped, I'd say. When songs get too much exposure on the radio they bore people, and they have less of a need to buy the album. The videos helped, because it showed the world that Prince has new music and that he is willing to pander to the kids.

We will see a host of newbie's on here now, and the whole Purple Rain fiasco will ensue. Purple wannabees will flock to this site and others, telling us how Lolita is better than anything on SOTT and we will roll our eyes, but they will take over the org and we will be in the purple outhouse, hocking up koolaid.

I see the gloom before the sun.

well radio airplay would have helped!! Every bit of airplay helps

The main thing what is helpin sales is the tour!!! period!!

he was playin to 60-80k ppl each week so 200k isnt too far fetched

prince more then madonna gained the most
since 1.5mil ppl attended some new fans but most old fans turned on agian!!

madonna played to so few ppl who r hardcore fans anyways so the impact was minimum!

If the album would have been released to itunes it would have sold 300k first week mainly becasue older fans dont go to stores to pick up cds!!

I am profoundly confused why it wasnt avialable to downloads

just imagine some of his mid 90s releases sold 300k total

and if this tour is bigger then the last one see the next cd to be way bigger and with proper promotion he can rule once agian in single charts too!!

FYI only ne-yo(300k) has open up above 200k so far in 2006
