Ya know what? Even though I think 3121 is just "pretty good," I still want it to sell like gangbusters. I would love it if he got this big hit radio hankering out of the way, and then felt free to delve back into the weirdness!

Well this is just amazing. I'm still holding off on celebrating but to know that Prince could sell this many and be on top is just GREAT. Let's hope it happens.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

As little as I think of the album, I'm happy for Prince and he deserves a number one album for all the great work he's done. Of course, it doesn't mean anything in the long term for an artist, but it seems important to him and many of his fans, so here's a toast to his Purple Majesty. Now get back to making exciting music and we're all happy.
No hard feelings.

I thought D & P charted at No1... But youre probably right. It took a while for P to really catch on over here in the UK, but we certainly stayed loyal for a while once he made his mark. Wasnt the Symbol album a no1 too?

Its quite hard to believe he has only ever had one no1 single over here tho'. TMBGITW... Do you think 3121 has the potential to give him his 2nd?

I´ve read a lot of your posts and you seem to be quite critical with Prince´s more recent output, which is fine, to each their own ( and there are many points where I´d agree with you, even though I also kinda dig his new music) but don´t you think that being number one in the charts again might lead to even better music in the future...I mean there´s the ego boost, the thought of "mission accomplished, what´s next?", and " now that I´ve proven I can do this, let´s do something different"...and so on.

Guess you catch my drift.

As much as I like Prince´s new music, I can also totally relate to the socalled "haters"...the thing with Prince seems to be that all those sceptics know very well what he´s still got in him, and it only takes a few minor changes to make even those happy again.

Nevertheless, he always keeps us curious.

Where do they think he made the Batman album, in the Batcave?

if 3121 can pull this off, it will be a big coup for Prince, and will result in considerable media attention. It should actually help spur additional sales of 3121.

Keeping fingers crossed! cool

People have until Saturday to buy 3121 for the sale price at $9.98, On Sunday Target will sell it at $13.99. $9.98 is a good deal with the CD, packaging, and lyric booklet that's included. It was also fun to open an see if there was a purple ticket inside. $13.99 is too much to pay for a single CD.

ONE-DAY SALES:
THE PRINCE OF TIDES

Through the Shifting Currents of the Music Biz, One Legend Continues to Walk on Water

March 22, 2006

In the early going, Prince’s new album on Universal Republic, 3121, is trending just shy of 200k and has a shot at hitting that sales plateau, depending on how much Starbucks weighs in. What’s stunning about this activity is that the Purple One is pulling it off without a tour, extensive radio play or iTunes (he hasn’t yet made the LP available to online services). That means the Hall of Famer will most probably notch up his first #1 since that Batman soundtrack, and it’ll be his first studio album to top the chart since Around the World in a Day in 1985.That said, we won’t completely rule out incumbent High School Musical (Walt Disney Records), which airs again this week on the Disney Channel. That could conceivably generate another 15-20% bump, which still wouldn’t quite get it over the hump, but this release is a bona fide phenomenon, so anything is possible.

The next big debut is from Virgin’s Ben Harper, which should move over 50k units and possibly top 60k, depending on the total generated by downloads on iTunes, where the Inland Empire icon is currently #1.

Other chart-worthy bows are from rapper B.G. (Koch), which should wind up at 55k-60k; teen rocker Teddy Geiger (Columbia), who’s #3 on iTunes and heading past 40k with a shot at 50k in an impressive first week for a developing artist; a live LP with studio B-sides from My Chemical Romance (WB), which is looking 35k-40k-ish; and indie rockers From First to Last (Epitph/ADA), who are on the way to around 25k.

Dollying back to take in the big picture, ccording to our research, the market was down 2-3% vs. last week according to our research, and down about 4% compared to the same week last year. That puts year-to-date album sales down around 3%.

This just in from MTV.com...

For the past five weeks, the "High School Musical" phenomenon has made its home in the top 10, while big-name artists sit back and watch as tracks from the children's TV movie crush high-charting hopes. Four weeks ago, "High School Musical" hit #1 after selling 101,000 copies (see "What Is 'High School Musical' And How Did It Get To #1?"). Since then, the disc has hovered in the #2 and #3 spots. According to the latest SoundScan figures, the soundtrack will return to #1 on next week's Billboard chart after logging 142,000-plus scans last week. Total sales of the disc are currently at 811,000.
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Hmmm, if Prince's sales are supposed to be just below, 200,000, wouldn't that still be ahead of High School Musical?
You know someone at Warner Bros. is buying up all the copies of HSM. They definitely don't want Prince to land in the #1 spot. lol

Wait a minute. I just checked the Billboard chart. HSM is #1 now. That MTV story must be from last week.
I mean, we will have to wait till next week to see where 3121 lands, right? The CD has only been out for 2 days.
