This cover is as exciting as TAC. BORING!!!!! I'd like to know why in the hell he just don't use Sheila E naked from belly button down, as a cover.

It's not all that bad. it's acutally a bit of eye catcher. that bright white font of the "3121" will catch ur eye. when your looking over albums in the new realse section.

sorry - but that hand placement makes it look like he's going into a kung fu pose. the asian inspired garb doesn't help! maybe 3121 stands for the number of people he's going to kill with his roundhouse kick.

Is this really the cover!? Hope not.

The spacing of the "3121" is way off. Not only that but the harsh texture of it clashes with the softer texture of everything else. (Should have been done in Photoshop)

I like the image but it would better serve the back. Not the cover. Rudeboy is 200% correct, he should be "more accessible".

Perhaps if elements of both these photos were combined. Maybe if the hand on the wall touched the hand (in a Daliesque way) of his own reflection, and that reflection directly confronts the viewer. Especially given the music we've already heard...it's "in your face".

I think that the designer should first listen to "Fury" a few times and then re-approach.

Anyway, hope this isn't the final.

Balls, when Joe Public is walking into the record store to buy a new CD do you seriously think that THIS will grab his attention!. First and foremost the price sticker will be slapped on his head or indeed over the title and secondly it comes across as a negative image i.e. dark, facing the wall etc. To be honest i only want the music on my IPOD but in the wider context of selling the CD to a wider audience i really don't think this does him any favours. At least with musicology we could see his face!.
Do you remember that stunning, gothic B&W picture that came out during the Chaos and Disorder promos where he looked like he was at deaths door with really dark make up?. Now THAT was a statement, look at the SOTT cover, Lovesexy cover, Dirty Mind etc.
Have shown the 3121 cover to some neutrals and they have just looked puzzled and used the word Crap to describe it!

-----
First of all outside of Best Buy,Circuit City and a few large department stores.
What records are you talking about.(LOL) Most are going out of business or hurting for cash.

"Do you remember that stunning, gothic B&W picture that came out during the Chaos and Disorder promos where he looked like he was at deaths door with really dark make up?. "

Yes, looking like he was at deaths door was a real great way to move all those copies of Chaos and Disorder. No one cares about the covers of CD's now a days.

Durrrr, there are record stores outside the US you know.Over here in UK for example if you don't have major instore marketing material your CD will be lost especially in somewhere like HMV.
I think you are totally missing the point, a CD cover IS a statement, that Gothic photo i referred to symbolised so much at the time where Princes head was at and how he was feeling, it would have made a stunning cover. 3121 aside look at it purely from a sales point of view next time you're in the store and see which appeal to you and which don't. A good cover HAS to grab a potential buyers attention yet I see so many that don't do that. Look at Green Days last CD cover , it has such a powerful image.
At the end of the day people like me think that the cover should be part of the Art and the music and i guess people like you don't which is cool.

WOW that is awful. What statement does this make?. This makes the Musicology cover look like Sgt Pepper!!!!. It's cheap looking, unimaginative and whatever else you choose!.

Hmmm.....I take it by that lame statement you are refering to The Beatles. Album covers.....do they matter...surley it is the content on the album that REALLY matters. Perhaps I'm wrong I dont think so though.

Just to clarify you ARE wrong.!. That Beatles cover is part of Musical history as are many other Iconic covers. If you had a great store wouldn't you want to window dress it properly?.

The more I look at the new the cover, the more I like it. There's a lot of warmth in the colors in the wall, which contrasts with the coldness of him having his back 2 the viewer. I can almost hear the opening of "Fury" when I look at it.

Yeah, me likes. biggrin

Does anyone from Chicago have a USA Today with the advertisement? In the one I have, Prince is not in either of the two "Life" sections.

sad I'm very disappointed by this cover. After hearing Black Sweat & Fury I expected something edgier. This cover is dull and doesn't not draw me in for a closer look (like 1999, ATWIAD, SOTT, TRC with all sorts of things to discover).

Even if he was going for the "mysterious" feel, I don't get it from this cover. To me the cover doesn't express the coolness and musical genius of Prince.

twocents
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I'm hoping that cover is just a small section of a much larger picture , maybe the entire cd artwork when opened up shows that its actually Prince listening at a wall and on the other side theres all celebrities dancing to his music a la the 3121 parties , chocolate fountain in the background , people having a good time etc etc ..... hey I can dream smile
