His guitar playing was breathtaking, but the song itself just doesn't have much of a memorable hook or chorus. I don't think Prince knows how to write a song that's catchy anymore. [Edited 2/5/06 13:03pm] I think "Fury" is very catchy and as someone else pointed out, the guitar part makes it catchy. At least you realize how good his guitar playing was! Indeed the tune is pretty catchy. It's not just a simple sing-along chorus though (if that's what you want, you can still turn to Britney&co).
It's the whole composition that makes it catchy. The bassline has been sticking in my mind for a while now.. Actually i thihnk thgis is one of the most solid tunes P has been putting out there since a looong time.

i did -- last week... "Black Sweat" Prince somehow tapped into something that went right. Why can't he do this ALL the time???

This song is really inspired by Jimi Hendrix, especially the vocal phrasings and guitar licks thrown in between the lyrics in the verses..... I really hope the energy of it is captured well on record, and if so, this could be the 3rd single from 3121 (I don't count Beautiful, Loved & Blessed, since that is a Támar feat. Prince track).... this song could get some airplay, especially in places with radio stations that aren't confined to narrow genres....

Good observations about the vocals.. it's so Jimmy. Yet it also has a distinct P-flavor.. just notice those 1999-ish synth riffs, the hits (which are a standard feature of Morris' setup, apparently), the way the synth plays the high G near the end of the song (a trick P has used throughout his career, and which especially the Time made into an artform all by itself.. lol). I agree that this should be made into a single a.s.a.p

Like some people here, I only hope the album version isn´t overproduced....If he plays it in the same vein of SNL, this is gonna be one of my fave Prince rock songs ever.

hmmmm.... I think that if he goes into the screeching and falsetto in a rocksong, he might repulse the mainstream of today.... I knew something was missing in the song but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. It's the falsetto. This song would have been really hot sung in his sassy falsetto. It just seems kind of bland, generic, and ordinary without it. As far as it pissing off today's mainstream, well, that would be a good thing. no it wouldn't have. It would have sounded like every other song that P does. The song sounds great just like he performed it last night in that earthy deep voice that he rarely sings in. The falsetto works beautifully on Black Sweat. Glad to see here Prince showing his range and chops on Fury! [Edited 2/5/06 15:10pm] Dance... Let me see you dance

Hmmm. 2freaky4church1 has been suspiciously quiet today. Could it be that he actually has nothing bad to say about Fury? That would be a first. Still, it's very unlike him to NOT come on here just to get attention and stir things up.

I am SO very glad to see all this love for "Fury" -- but it's making me quite nervous at the same time. If the studio version of "Fury" isn't a VERY close approximation of the live cut, this board is going to look like Carrie's high school gym the morning after the prom.
Peace, David | |

Peace, David well, the prince of old would just release the soundboard from the show. if he had some balls he would do just that, again. and for all you, "you folks living in the past", commentors please note this aint be living in the past..just me pointing out how prince can save face once again by releasing live versions of songs (which always have much more energy) like he did for Purple Rain. Brendan said: That was one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen on SNL; far superior to his Grammy performance that to this day continues to be talked about as if it were the stuff of legend. “Fury” is the stuff of legend, along with “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Clapton, The Rolling Stones and Hendrix -- if he were still alive -- I suspect would all love to have “Fury” in their grand repertoire. This is the type of song that can make a career, or reshape one. It’s that improbably good. And if Prince should ever find himself in the presence of a Stones’ audience again, he now has the goods to keep the drunken Hells Angels from violent outbursts; unless you count demanding an encore at knifepoint violent. Hendrix is dead?!! Man, I gotta start cruisin the news sites! "Don't hate me cos I'm beautiful"

[Edited 2/5/06 16:49pm] That second thread had a little too much homophobia and obsession with Prince's sexcapades for me (among other broad misconceptions)...but I did laugh when they were talking about Prince making faces like other famous guitarists...I guess they don't recognize the funk face when they see it. Ta Amo Corazon was kinda dull IMO.
Black Sweat was cool. But oh sweet Jesus, I love this song! How'd he know I'm a sucker for guitar? Prays he doesn't water it down or overproduce it on the album. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

What is this obsession with falsetto? I'd be happy if I never heard him sing falsetto again. He's done it to death. He's got a great regular singing voice and wish he's use it more often. Anyway theres something disturbing about a (nearly) 50 year old man sing as though his balls ain't dropped yet! Boo to falsetto...and hiss as well! "Don't hate me cos I'm beautiful"

Why does every f'ing song have to be about someone? How come no one is asking who Black Sweat is about... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. Seems everyone is talking about this tune! My jaw was left on the floor after the performance of this song last night and I was checking around to see if others caught it. Sure enough on message boards of all kinds from sports forums to other music forums there were threads popping up about it. Just WOW!
