I don't think that all the "relationships" Prince had with all the other women after Vanity, would agree with that. I'm sure he must have told them that he loved them also, especially Mayte and Manuela, his ex-wives.

I think that was Denise's fear about Prince. In one of the interviews she did after her conversion, maybe it was on Joan Rivers (I can't remember), she said that it could be easy to slip back into that lifestyle.

I don't think Prince was that sentimental that he was so lost with the passing of Vanity. Mayte on the ohter hand, seems like she never let go of Pirnce. She people should look out for. To All the Haters on the Internet

I don't know, 1contessa. This is just my belief. I don't believe Prince was some secret druggie like the media is trying to portray. Could he have indulged in drugs ocassionally? Of course. It just doesn't make sense given his lifestyle and religion. If the autopsy doesn't reveal an illness, I will always believe he died of a broken heart.

I see your point, Vanity wasn't the only women in his life, and we don't know what happened to Prince. We will never know how he would have reacted if any one of his other women had passed away. But I do believe he had a deep connection with Vanity and he was very hurt by her passing which was widely reported in Feb, you cannot deny that. Keep Calm & Listen To Prince

cool to learn about how many songs were about Denise and that his mom played basketball
i had looked up that the name Denise means "wine" -- so now i think he sang a case of u about her, too
its cool to think that Denise's prayers were part of Prince's trans4mation over the years.
on another thread i mentioned that the moon is a mirror, so wondering how much the moon symbolism he used was related to Vanity, his mirror.
i had copied this picture on another thread, but perhaps it is more apporpriate here, from prince's march 31 tweet
i just had a feeling this could represent prince and denise flowing through the veins of the tree of life...purplemaplesyrup

I am one who believes that a person might have several "soul mates" out there and through fate might meet one or two (hopefully not at the same time). That said "soul mate" is very different for one absolutely true, passionate maybe even torrid love........and that person might not be the best person to partner up with for many reasons. I think Denise Matthews was Prince's torrid, passionate love........I think he might have been better off or maybe should have married Sheila E who seemed to be a much better match. Solid musical family, I saw the Escovedos perform at the 1987 Berkeley Jazz festival with Sheila (thats when I figured out WHO she was) and from everything I've seen what a wonderful-well adjusted Mexican American family BEYOND music. If he could have just gotten out of the stereotypical 24ish Vanity looking beauty model and realized what that Ms. Escovedo might have really been the love of his life.....I think he would still be with us if he had.....I don't think he would have been alone in that building on 4.21.15 and I think she might have talked some sense into him regarding Mr. Graham and the JWs. No matter what he died from good, consistent medical care and some rest (a good partner would have insisted) would have maybe given him 10-15 more years if not more. Oh well........We love you anyway Mr. Nelson!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I agree....its to me more about not embracing where he was in life as a 57 year old man and not realizing that, as out parents probably told us, its not ALWAYS good to be alone meaning he probably missed some opportunities for a true, caring life-partner that would probably have said: 1) take your meds [no matter what he died from]; 2) worship in moderation.....maybe go back to being a 7th Day Adventist cuz the JWs are going to ruin your health; 3) get some sleep....get some rest...do other things that you love in between; 4) spend time with my [whoever this person would have been] and your [whoever in his fam was stable...or his chosen fam if not blood relate] fam.
Just common sense good loving is what the guy was missing...you could hear this void or emptiness on certain songs on AoA and I think middle age was a tough leap for him w/o a partner. Probably would help if he had gotten out of the Vanity-look alike thing too....Vanity was his muse but I think Sheila E would have been a wonderful partner. Kinda like Santana and Cindy Blackmon...oh well....

This may have hurt him alot and made him even more vulnerable because of his sadness. But he acted fine later on. Wish I could've done more, wish I could've been a comfort to him myself. Lesson: make sure to take care of ur loved ones and let them know how much u care, each and every day!

It would have upset him no doubt, she was his first big love, but she was very firmly in the distant past by now. With some of the songs we don't really know about which woman they were, if indeed they were about one particular woman.

If it brings people comfort to know that Prince and Vanity finally have their "face to face" and God supernaturally put them together, then go ahead believe that, we all need to find some comfort and joy in such horrible news. I don't think he ever found his soulmate because he never was able to get over his oedipus complex, you're supposed to find your equal, not someone that's equal to your mother. For a person that spoke about freedom and free will, well I don't think he was able to exert free will when he was stuck in his oedipus complex. Personally, I think Prince was already aware that his time in earth was limited, I'm not sure if he had an illness or if he was just so spiritually aware that he knew when his time was up. Personally, I get comfort from knowing he's with his son and is jamming with the greats up there, Can you imagine him and Jimi Hendrix jamming together? There actually are some rumours that Prince and Vanity were off and on after the breakup in 83.
In 1985 Vanity told someone on a talk show that they were together off and on for 2 1/2 years. The official timeline has them together for only 1 1/2.
In Nikki Sixx autobiography he says he went to her apartment in Jan 1987 and it was filled with roses and a card said "Drop him. Take me back. Prince," . Prince had just spent a week in LA recording and this was right after. That summer in June Vanity meets Nikki in Minneapolis for his concert but stays behind to see Prince who was in town finishing the SOTT movie. Nikki breaks up with her shortly thereafter and I wondered whether it was because there was still some back and forth with Prince.
She did an interview around 2007 where she said they still spoke on the phone occasionally.
There are alot of parallels in their lives which I spoke about in another thread on strange symmetries. But it always seemed like Vanity was one step ahead of him, leading him, as it were. She left him first, renounced her nname first, renounced the Hollywood lifestyle, found religion first, got married first, got divorced first, etc. She was like the moon, exerting a pull on him, or perhaps like a star, guiding him.
He of course may have, in his mind, written her off, and kept himself distracted with younger women, lots of them. They never lasted either. It doesn't mean that she had no effect on him over the years. There seems to have been alot of influence, either that or big coincidences.
According to this article, his friends thought he was depressed over Vanity's death. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/05/arts/music/friends-sought-help-for-princes-addiction-lawyer-says.html?_r=0 [Edited 5/9/16 20:07pm]

Is that really from Prince's twitter? Yep, it was posted with a link to a review of the Parade album which had celebrated its 30th anniversary. I took it as a symbol for the story of Under the Cherry Moon, some have claimed that he was referencing him and Denise as soulmates. Feel free to have your own interpretation of it. Love is God,

I had a rare opportunity to listen to the concert he did in Australia right around the time he found out Denise had passed away. You could hear that he was very emotional in his singing. His playing the piano and having songs like Little Red Corvette and Dirty Mind mashed together in slow tempo, you knew that his mood was full of sadness and sorrow. I cried through the some of it. ALL so true.
I saw that interview and she said her and Prince were together off and on for 2 and a half years and yes the Nikki Sixx book did state Prince was still trying to get her back yeeeeears later.
He still wanted her, he loved her and she kept walking away..she got so messed up after she met Nikki..not blaming him..she was already doing drugs, she admitted that, but things changed a lot for her then, Prince did want her to take him back though, more than once.
Thats why he wrote The Beautiful Ones for her, she had just left him the first time...right when Purple Rain was being written and rehearsels were happening, he was heartbroken.
She said in an interview, she wasn't going to get paid!!! She was expected to do itall for free. And Berry Gordy (Motown) offered her a million dollar MUSIC AND MOVIE DEAL she said...and Prince said she couldn't have both....she had to make a difficult choice and he was heartbroken (she said she was heartbroken as well) because she wanted an actual career, not just run around in her underwear singing. She wanted the Motown contract ANNNNND still wanted to stay with Prince, but he made her chose.
I did also read they kept in touch by phone after she became ill and was told she only had 3 days to live...he did love her!!!!!!
Thanks so much for the link about what his friends said ''The beautiful ones they hurt you every tiiiiime....''

Just wanted any1 more knowledgable to correct the accuracy of some thoughts i've been having on this subject. So
I'm getting the idea that Vanity was Prince's first deep love, and his first, prototype protege (and also the first of his deep loves to pass on?)? And maybe his evolving tapestry of proteges were in some ways attempts to redeem aspects of his first protege that he wished had turned out better. Even though her drug use was her choice, maybe he felt a great hope to somehow undo those things that had led to her health issues. Did any of his future proteges have drug issues to the extent that Vanity had? He being a perfectionist, maybe part of him always wanted to fix that first love. Maybe part of his spiritual interests were inspired by a desire to heal Denise. And when she passed on, that closed a door on a hope that had been fueling some of his goals. But perhaps it also meant that he had succeeded, he had perfected the protege process, so that his mirror muse angel could now return to heaven.
I noticed that Denise married in 1995 and wondered if this had any influence on Prince deciding to marry in 1996, i.e. move on since Denise was now officially unavailable. Also wonder if Vanity's overdose in 1994 was in any way connected to sadness of Prince's growing love with Mayte. Sorry, just trying to make connections to more fully understand this theory. I had zero interest in Prince's personal life until this news hit that i want to undo or at least make sense of. I can understand his desire to have young beautiful women around him. I think part of his ministry was to appeal to people attracted to that beautiful face, and he being a sensitive mirror himself, found it helpful to be around and reflect that youth and beauty.
Honestly i believe that he could be alive somewhere. Any cause would be tragic, but this thought of a connection to Denise is the most deep beautiful poetic explanation i'm aware of. it seems like he was aware that something big and unexpected was coming. flowing through the veins of the tree of life...purplemaplesyrup

I swear you just read my mind and this ^^^^ (the bold type) was something i picked up on yeeeeears ago! Once she got married, i felt he gave up on her, for good (or so it seemed) and they both divorced eventually, Denise once...Prince, twice. ''The beautiful ones they hurt you every tiiiiime....''

I tend to think there was alot of immaturity, drugs, promiscuity, jealousy, huge egos esp Prince's involved in their breakup but also the back and forth that apparently went on for some time. Underneath it all though I think Vanity represented his ideal woman, of whom he found many copies but never quite found the original again. Vanity had come very close to dying on a couple of occasions and could not risk that life again but also I think Prince's promiscuity upset her emotionally to the degree it spun her into drug abuse. They had both come from broken homes with physical abuse (esp Vanity) and I also read that because of her abusive background and emotional sensitivity she could not tolerate feeling controlled.Prince on the other hand admitted to an interviewer that he needed to control people because otherwise he felt they would leave him and he would be all alone (his parents pushed him out onto the streets when he was 12). Prince would be with other women and in revenge Vanity would be with other men, and Prince just could not tolerate that. Apparently the summer of 83 Prince was conducting an affair with Jill Jones and in return Vanity went off with the director of Purple Rain Albert Magnoli, and was getting cozy with Adam Ant, Micki Freeh, and the final nail in the coffin was Brownmark, which is when Prince decided he could not take anymore.
At least she was his equal in dishing it back out to him. Underneath it all they had a wild and crazy attraction for each other that was extremely passionate. It was said when she quit the movie that he immediately found another girl to star in it that looked just like her, and this was Appolonia, whom he took to a club to parade in front of Vanity, and also took her to bed to hurt Vanity.
In the diary of Vanity's that was recently on ebay there is a page describing her last day in Minneapolis, how she called Prince to say goodbye and they met up at First Avenue. She says in the diary that she knows he will never change (his ways about women) and so even though this is the hardest thing she's done, she's determined to leave. But she did so sweetly, on good terms. There seems to have been some overlap with Susannah, and some meetings in 1987 but by this year Vanity was in sorry shape due to the drugs, and this was also a negative time for Prince.
Personally I think Prince getting married was a reaction to Vanity's marriage which had taken place out of the blue in March 1995. Vanity's marriage collapsed amidst worries about her safety because of her husband's tendency toward physical abuse in 1996 so I also wondered if that breakup played any role in the breakdown of his marriage to Mayte since she was free again. But then Vanity's kidneys gave out and she needed a transplant and then became fulltime evangelist. As sweet as Mayte was, as intelligent as Susannah was, as great musically as Sheila E was, I always felt that Vanity was his match. She had a kind of charisma that the others lacked, but which complemented Prince's, and they seemed to amplify each other's 'light' as it were. I did not regard Mani as anything more than a palliative rebound girl who was in the right place at the right time and looked alot like Vanity. He married her right when both his parents died. That's when he married Mani (mother substitute?) and got heavily involved with Larry Graham and JW (father substitute?)
Oh one other parallel. Vanity announced her engagement to Nikki Sixx in June 1987 then goes to Minneapolis to see Prince (to rub his face in it?). Prince is in his black period, and horrible to work with (reaction to her engagement?). The next year on tour he 'asks' Sheila to marry him but never follows through. Just like Vanity had done. I also wondered whether Prince asking Sheila E was just a way of keeping score with Vanity and getting pleasure from knowing he could marry if he wanted to. Poor Sheila.

As far as any of his proteges having drugs issues like Vanity none come to mind, except perhaps Amy Winehouse who he wanted to work with but her husband introduced her to hard drugs and from there she never recovered. But then again she was more a peer than a protege so it doesn't really apply. Whether or not Vanity and Prince were soulmates, it just warms my heart that they are free of any pain they were suffering from in this life. [Edited 5/9/16 22:20pm] Love is God,
