I get that..its like when Marilyn Monroe died..she dies still so young, gorgeous, sex symbol...tragic...but if she had lived to reach her 70's 80's etc. she would not be worshipped as the mega sex symbol she has been for so many centuries.......

Its ONLY because our last moments with her/from her were her as a ''fantasy'' of youth, sex appeal and lust were....we never saw her age, get fat, etc....hope that makes sense......................................... confused

Ok, woudn't it be great if Prince & Vanity were both in a witness protection type situation where they have assumed new names, identites, etc.. and are swigging margheritas on a tropical beach somewhere, happy and together???

Ahh the 2 most beautiful ones of them all...P&V 4eva cool

I dont know...I never heard Vanity say they did...but who knows?

Yes they stayed in touch! Vanity had said that in some recent interviews. Remember when she passed Prince said "someone very dear to us has passed". He was the love of her life. This is coming from one of her best friends. She had such incredible unconditional love for him. I believe he truly realized that. And yes I believe he was striving to be the ultimate man for her just the way he was seeking spirituality and practicing celibacy these are all things she too was into. So yes I truly believe if Vanity was still on this earth so would be Prince.

There's no way to tell that if Vanity was still on this earth, that Prince would be also. Everyone has to die, as it is written in the Bible, that every man/woman is appointed a time to live and a time to die, and Vanity nor Prince was no different, they were human beings just like all of us.

You know ur right. I'm just saying her death was a big factor in his downfall.

IMO her death affected him greatly. If anything the Feb 16 shows in Melbourne, which my cousin attended where he talked so candidly and tenderly about her, and dedicated songs to her showed his TRUE feelings once and for all!. She wasn't some fling, he loved her deeply! I went to the Feb 20 show 1 in Sydney and I really enjoyed myself (out of the the 3 times I have seen him over the years its my favourite cause its just him with piano), but learning from my cousin and other fans descriptions about that particular night I wish I was there. In fact those Feb 16 shows are on top of my list, I want to hear it for myself, it took me over 2 weeks to listen to the last show and not cry I think I will be be ready now to hear the rest of the shows and put it in context.

During his last Atlanta show he sang Dark, Little Red Corvettee/Dirty Mind and Purple Rain which were all about Vanity. Were Indifference, Eye Love U, But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore (especially the “favourite protege line”) about her as well?

"Pop Life" was about her too wasn't it? Vanity had a huge coke problem that took a toll on her kidneys and caused her to depend on dialysis to live. I remember someone on FB writing about Prince's death being hastened by Vanity's death. They said something like "the heart wants what it wants....." very powerful, who knows about the spiritual realm. Perhaps she was calling him?

Hello Orgers. I am a longtime lurker. I'd always visit this site to get info when Prince was touring. I've been a Prince fan for over a decade. My love for him grew steadily over the years. I have to admit I'm not familiar with his entire catalog. I became a fan because of the more known hits, but I never missed an opportunity to see him live when I could. My condolences to you all. There are other artists whose music/lives I'm more intimately familiar with and I'd be completely devastated if they passed unexpectedly, so I can't imagine the pain you feel. I was surprised at how Prince's death affected me, so I'm sure it's a lot worse for those who have been in his corner forever.

I wanted to contribute to this topic. I believe Vanity's death had a profound effect on Prince. I think they loved each other very much, but maybe being together was too toxic. You can carry a deep love for someone without being in their physical presence. Love is very powerful. I believe Vanity may have been Prince's inspiration for his spirituality. I agree that she was the prototype for all the women who came after her. It was clear that Vanity respected her relationship with Prince. She rarely spoke ill of him. I think they shared a soul bond, and I feel that Maybe Prince figured they could reuinte later in life. Her death closed the door on that. If he died of an overdose, I think it's because he wasn't aware of the amount of medication he was taking to dull his pain. Prince wasn't behaving like someone who knew he was going to die. He was planning shows and writing a memoir. I think the media wants to paint him as a drug addict because it's easy. Prince was such a private person and they don't have a story. I hope one day someone edits and publishes the portion of his memoir he completed. Although I am sad Prince is no longer with us, I think he couldn't handle his angel's homegoing and subconciously wanted to be with her.

I agree and have thought everything you've said.

My feeling is that Denise's death closed the chapter on Purple Rain- their story. My theory is because the theme for one of concerts he did just after Denise's funeral was "We need a new story". Why would do need a new story? I could be wrong, but I surmise that it meant the Purple Rain story was over. When I think about it, it sounds sad and devastating. sad Especially because I do believe both had a hope of reconciliation when they could handle a mature and pure relationship.
Another orger mentioned that they lived parallel lives. Which I agree with as well. Their deepening spiritually happened around the same time. I have said this before, but I think the reason they didn't come together again is because Denise, despite still being in love with him, had fears of her past coming back to haunt her. Once She gave her life to Christ, she left the Hollywood lifestyle behind. Prince with his musical career, still had a foot in it. Maybe he was planning to slide more into a mentorship role with other upcoming artists rather than jumping off of pianos. Maybe he was hoping to arrive at place in his life that could've made reconciliation with Denise possible. Now they were both mature, more spiritually connected, and all the crazy and stupid things people do in their 20's, sometimes even 30's, was behind them. Her dying closed all those possibilities. He lost her a second time and for good- as far as earthly life. Perhaps it was too much to bear. I think Prince had some serious underlying health problem(s), but like you, I don't think he was planning on dying so soon. I think after Denise's death, he lost his way. He was medicating but was trying to ease more than just physical pain.

Exactly I think he was coping or trying to cope with the emotional pain of losing Vanity. In the process he took to much of something. Losing someone you hold dear can be very stressful it can cause physical pain/illness. It can cause havoc on the body.

After 6 months of being ill, my dad passed away..my uncle died almost 4 weeks later..surprisingly..he was his big brother, very best friend, protector, confidant...it was shocking, but we all knew he didn't want to be here anymore without his big brother sad sad sad

.

Sometimes the psychy and physical body can't come together to accept when something so heartbreaking and mindblowing happens..it literally breaks you down; body, mind...and eventually your spirit.

.

I think after she died, once it really sunk in, Prince's body started breaking down (and whatever he was taking for pain) just sped up the process unfortunately. So so sad.

I know that many of us are trying to make sense of Prince's death, but I don't believe that his dying had anything to do with Vanity's passing. I know that it would make for a great fairy tale type of love story, but I don't think that Vanity's passing had anything to do with Prince's passing. Sure he loved her at one time, but who's to say that after all of those years, that he still loved her in the same manner? He may have had love for her yes, but maybe he loved her as a friend after all those years. The man had plenty of women, plenty that he professed to love and even marry, and that's while Vanity was still alive. In all that time that he was alive, not once did he and Vanity reunite, did they? Prince was the type of guy that loved many of woman, and left many behind when he moved on to the next, and he didn't look back. It seemed like when it was over for him, it was over, and whomever came next was next, and so on and so on. Prince loved his mom and dad also, and I'm sure that he loved his child with Mayte, and if he didn't pass after their deaths, why then would Vanity's death cause him to pass? Sorry if you don't agree, but I'm just being real here.

Oh trust, I definitely know how hard a lot of loss is, I lost my dad, grandmother, and sister all in one decade, and in the next decade, lost my son, and a few years ago, my mom......so believe me, I know how that can affect a person because I've lived it. At times, I've felt it was too much also and have had to lean on God heavily, and thanks to Him, I'm still here and still coping.

Who knows what Prince's relationship was like with his parents. Death is inevitable, and parents are "supposed" to die before you. While his son's death affected him, he didn't get a chance to really bond with him or establish a relationship. That is not to minimize the effect it had on him, but to say it's different than having a relationship with a partner. Plus Denise left him. That's tough to take for someone with an ego. It seems the timing wasn't right for either of them, and I do agree with the person who said Denise didn't want to backslide into the Hollywood life. She actively avoided it. Who knew what she and Prince got into when they were together. They may have been a negative influence on each other. It's one thing to be separated from the one you love and know they're still around, than to be separated and know they are gone and you can never see them again. Prince was a private person. Who's to say he and Denise weren't in limited contact over the years? That's something we'll never know. The fact that he had other women around says nothing. Plenty of people get into relationships because they don't want to be alone. It doesn't mean they love or even like the person they're with.

Margena A. Christian who used to be the senior of Ebony Mag and posted this link about the connection between Prince, his mom and Vanity. Very deep indeed.
