New topic PrintableSame tired set list, prince is always entertaining to watch and carnt go wrong wit a set list like that. But his refusal to play any newer material is a big letdown for this hardcore fan. Come on prince, mix it up a little.

Yeah we stayed around til it finished. One of the older female ushers was getting here grove on to it. . It was a fitting song title to be played with the stage starting to be dismantled. . Thanks for helping me out with my memory with the other songs. Good description of the show too. I'm feeling ya on the sampler stuff. It was weird. I felt people were digging it more than the rest of the show. . The lack of new or even rarely played stuff is a bummer for the hardcores. I did feel he'd loose the crowd quick if he did play more new stuff tonight. It is tough when you have so much material and so many hits. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I've often wondered if this is Prince's way of taking a breather onstage, now he is older and can't run around, sing and play guitar for 2 hours. Which is better than plonking himself on a stool. BUt... this sampler set is getting SO tedious. Even to first timers.
I was at one of the 21 nights in London shows at the O2. I witnessed the first time he EVER did this sampler set. It suprised everyone and it was so different... it was electric. Even the band members were shocked and amazed. I could see their faces.
But that was summer 2007... 8 years ago! That's the equivilant of Lovesexy 88 to Emancipation in 1996. Can you imagine if he was doing the same medleys the emancipation era that he was during Lovesexy? NO! Thought not.
Prince you are better than this. Drop the sampler set and think of something else. I might even take the stool and an acoustic guitar! [Edited 4/10/15 2:12am] ----------

Yes I was a little disappointed that he didn't play any of his new stuff from the PE. I was actually suprised that he isn't trying to promote the new albums. All in all it was still nice to be there. The energy was higher than high....

LOL...well..I think she has to focus.
You can tell Prince had to work with her It's not a dis to her but you can tell she's not that kind of drummer She wasn't grooving on Musicology, Housequake or Controversy. 7roses said:

For those that constantly complain about all things Prince, just be glad he's still alive and healthy enough to perform. Do you think fans of Jimmy Hendrix, James Brown, and Michael Jackson wish they were alive so they could see them? Prince will be 57 in June. Why would you expect him to be as energetic and agile as he was when he was younger? He still got IT! Come on Antonb, 7roses, Revolution75, and the few others who always have something negative to say... stop the hate. Ever heard the phrase, "If you don't have anything positive to say, don't say anything at all."? I can't even enjoy this site because you all hog it up with your complains and criticism. Let's try a different, more positive approach from now on, please? POSITIVITY!!!

Yes, I noticed and it wasn't the 1st time he's had the year of release incorrect; anyways, it's a minor detail. While I loved last night's show in terms of energy, talent, and length, it was disappointing that all the trax during the principal part of the concert were from the period 1981-1987, save 4 "Musicology." IMHO, there should have been a minimum of 3 trax from each new album AOA and PLECTRUMELECTRUM, especially since the show was billed "P & 3EG." "Clouds" was not enough. We should have had some of these: "FunkNRoll," "AnotherLove," "Wow," "The Gold Standard," "U Know" (not just that snippet), "Breakfast Can Wait," "PretzelBodyLogic," "FixUrLifeUp," and "The Breakdown." it was probably best for him not to perform those songs and smart because the majority of the Detroit audience are most likely not familiar with any of the PE rock songs, especially since none of them received airplay, he probably played what the crowd is familiar with and wanted to here, keep hope he'll play the songs you like on his next Detroit gig. Remember there are always more casual fans seeing him for the 1st time than hardcore ones who know every song from every album.

Tedious for first timers?! Highly unlikely.
Despite the amount of complaining about the "sampler set(s)", its very likely that a significant majority of the crowd are first or second timers or are just looking to go have fun at a concert of a legend, the more familiar songs from his playlist the better - whether they are in full or not.
It only makes sense to gear the concert for that crowd and not those - the "hardcore fans" - who are are going to find something to complain about anyway.
There is nothing wrong with the sampler set. It hypes the crowd, and I bet even several of the people that constantly get on the org to complain about it.

I am not a hater, Im a big fan of prince and nearly all of his work. His shows have become predictable and conforming too much to the masses. There is newer material that would work live, but he is refusing to do it for whatever reason. That's my only complaint with prince. I think it is a reasonable complaint or thought.

Prince + Detroit = Lovefest
I was suprised by the setlist being void of most of AOA and 3EG but I think the 11 years between shows dictated that. each song was like a faded photograph that brought back so many memories for all. This was an "I love Detroit" and "Detroit Loves Prince" kind of night. I love hearing lesser known songs as much as the next guy but I've been seeing Prince shows since 1984 and this was truly one of his best. Thanks for a great night Prince, "Partyman" and "4ever in my life" were awesome surprises!
P.S. Judith Hill and the band were great, I'd love to see them again in a smaller club setting! [Edited 4/10/15 8:14am]

The crowd didnt seem to be interested in the new or lesser known songs Even She's Always.....didn't get a big response from the crowd. I just knew they would go crazy on that one adeUpName said:

Glad that Cassy's still performing with them. She's so needed to fill out the sound in a lot of those tracks. Liv's backup singers are good additions too, although I miss Elisa. I need to hear that version of Green Garden with P & Judith. Change it one more time..
