I love this song, Josh played it over the PA at PP april 4th, something like,
"in every city every town, we came to shut this party down, shut it down..."
I had memorized the first verse or so I thought and then he played and by the time we left I had forgotten everything... It's a really cool song with Prince sort of rapping over the music as mentioned above in a cool way... very grooveable .

I just realized after viewing another thread: Prince/Live Nation did not send out download links for What If and Ex's Face to the Detroit crowd. Unless I missed something?

Maybe has plans to send another new "Masterpiece" of his, to his "motor babies"? That's been his new choice of distribution lately. He is so brilliant @ coming up with new ways.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Prince has genuine long hair again. I want to see him rock that Lovesexy/Batman look again! I got two sides... and they're both friends.

. Yup...I suggested emailing the ticket buyers a dowload for "Shut It Down", as that seemed the song for Detroit...perhaps it's too good to email for free! I do really like he concept of emailing the ticket buyers a song after the concert but I guess they abandoned the idea after Louisville

funksterr said: Whoah Judith Hill? I was thinking I'd skip these Hit and Run shows, but now I kind of want to go. Decisions, decisions.... Honestly, I think I'd be more excited to see Judith Hill WIHTHOUT Prince and his self-censoring sampler-set, cover-song-playing reloaded-hits bullcrap. Hmmm.... Yeah, I think I still might pass. I'm busy Monday. Prince worth 300 GAZILLION DOLLARS, yet he so greedy, he's selling tickets on a Monday, 4 days before the show, just so he can get a bigger percentage at the gate. No respect for the fans, man. The Filthmore only holds 2000 people. No way 6 shows can't sell-out there. Seems its all about cashing in than about the music these days...the fams...the vibes...the moment....is this the wash?strictley bizznis! Prouddaddyfunkateer

Don't forget he gave away Judith Hill's album (which is actually quite good) for free just a few weeks ago.

Press reports say that 9 of the 11 songs on it were someone else's work.....

yeah, it could be that he wants to avoid any legal hassles that come with profiting off of someone else's intellectual property

Actually looked like some nice surprises in the set list, even though mostly business as usual. My question beyond the "why doesn't he play stuff from the new CDs", is why is he running songs like Cool, Can't stop til You get enough, the "immortal Sly songs" over and over, even Jungle Love sometimes? I mean maybe break out some of HIS own older stuff, like play Lady Cab Driver or Automatic, Playin In The Sunshine, America, etc. I'm just grasping songs off the top of my head. But it just seems weird to have a song like Cool, which I love, don't get me wrong, as such a staple of his set list lately. I know he is finding well known songs, but the same audience that knew and jammed to Cool would remember LCD, Automatic. Also, since Prince seems very interested in talking about and playing all of his "so many hits, so little time, doesn't it seem strange that he never plays, and fine with me as it is not a favorite of mine, The Most Beautiful Girl in The World? He seemed very proud of that song at the time as he scored a "hit" independant of WB. Just seems strange that it is totally off the play list.
Also, quick question, I assume the LGC version he has been playing is still the "updated" version, correct? When I first heard him do it, I thought that was kinda cool, freshen it up a bit. But I did not anticipate that it was now the official version. Nothing hypes a "casual" fan based crowd like TGC, but the fast version, not the mid-tempo one where it takes the casual fan several bars to even know what it is. Maybe "Mona Lisa" might look good with blonde hair, but no reason to change what is considered a masterpiece permanantly. If I went and saw Elton John, I wouldn't want Crocodile Rock to be a ballad, just sayin.
Need less to say, it still looked like a party good time and if/when he is a bit closer to by geographical area, I'll be there bacuase a good, not great, Prince concert for me is still a billion times better than any other concert I might attend. Party on Mo Town folks, I do hope it was fun!

It was fun. If I could afford to I would attend a Prince concert every week. As for why he doesn't play his new stuff, nobody knows. I wish there was a go between to relay our questions for him and then he could answer them. I vote for Militant since he's had a previous "talking relationship".

I don't have a problem with covers in general, but I have a problem with: 1.SO many covers! 2 MJ songs, 1 Janet, Sly, Wild Cherry, etc. At times it felt like it wasn't even a Prince concert. Some of these were longer than Prince's own songs. 2. The sampler set in conjunction with so many covers. If there's time to do more songs, they should be your own or your own compositions (like COOL). He did this on the Super Bowl performance too. Queen, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan and Foo Fighters. It was great, but on your biggest televised concert you want to perform covers?

My theory is he is no longer interested in promoting his stuff as much as in the past and he wants to showcase that he can do covers sometimes better than the original artists. This is just speculation. Perhaps someone who has more of an inside perspective can accurately assess his motives. Prince is definitely an enigma and a bit of a pain in the ass. and his band played the rest of the music, right? But i don't think it matters. Other people wrote some (most?) of the songs, and their work probably cannot be profitted from without making some kind of deal.

At best, it appears, there are 2 new Prince/Judith compositions and the rest are Prince productions of songs Judith co-wrote with Marc Cherry. That's why there is a lawsuit, no? Prince, it would seem, released Jolene Cherry's music without her consent: “Judith Hill’s first album — ’Back in Time’ — is now out, but rather than cheering along with her, the people who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop her career and album and worked to position Hill for her first release (as well as those who co-wrote many of the songs) are sitting dumb-founded on the sidelines while Prince gives away their investment for free,” Cherry’s suit said. He has played "Play That Funky Music" live more times than Computer Blue, Witness 4 The Prosecution, Vicki Waiting, Fury, Data Bank, and We Can Funk combined. Any other artist with songs that strong would hang their heads in shame. But Prince is out of his mind. And the casual fans lose their fucking minds when they hear the opening notes to Funky Music, which makes him think he's doing something people love. Not to mention, but I will mention lol...the stupid Karaoke bit has fans screaming like the Beatles reuinted and announced they are giving away millions of dollars. So the Prince karaoke thing is here to stay until the dimwits stop scareaming their asses off.

1. We all know Prince puts on a great show, regardless of the setlist/sampler set (which is hot), opening act, etc. He wore Detroit OUT! 2. It's always going to be nearly impossible to please everyone, with so many hits and directions he can go in. 3. The refusal to play new stuff has always been strange to me, too. For example, the One Nite Alone tour was the last full tour where he featured the current CD that I can remember. (Another fun, awesome show AND aftershow!). Is the setlist decision related to Warner Bros., or is it just what he feels will draw the most fans - casual and hardcore? I have no clue. That (strategic?) battle with Warners is always on our minds considering the history. Wish I was more plugged in. 4. I feel he could still draw needed numbers by clearly announcing a tour based on the new stuff - split it in half with the hits or blend the two, whatever. He's Prince, after all. 5. Agree that it will be interesting to see if he does what 7roses wonders - slowly introduces newer songs - or at least seldom or never played before hits.

. Obviously you did not read the sampler set discussion. Doing sampler sets since at least 2007 is to be called various things except 'hot'.

LOL. Yes, I have read all those sampler set disses. On paper, it is kind of a whack idea, considering the band could play them all live. In reality, it is as I said it was - hot. Check the audience reactions. Out of their minds at both shows I went to - 2010 or so in Montreal and Detroit 2015. (And it still takes skill and timing to do it, plus he does sing some verses). Granted it was a hotter the first time I experienced it in Montreal. But it still rocked in 2015. Now that I've experienced it, I'd rather him slip in a few new songs and/or seldom-played hits in that slot.
