I agree Trax. He played his new stuff on SNL and it went over well. That's why I was surprised he didn't play Anotherlove and Marz at least. I know that orger that chewed us out hates PE, but there are at least 3 good tunes on there. I guess on the other hand I'm wondering why Prince decided not to play them. Is it a) he lost interest in promoting his new stuff or b) he didn't think the crowd would like it Or c) his repertoire is too large and he couldn't decide or d) none of the above What do u think? [Edited 4/12/15 6:31am] [Edited 4/12/15 6:33am]
He played Clouds and it was a bit of a dud live. Nobody knew it. He performed Act Of God during one of the encores, and it was pretty cool. Nobody knew it either, but it was uptempo and part of larger jam session.

. Who knows? My best guess is that he wanted to play safe and do the songs "everybody" likes/knows. I also think he picked Detroit to introduce Judith Hill to a friendly audience... Now what I'm really interested in to know...what do the 3rdeyegirls think about the setlist now that they're not playing "their" songs on tour anymore... Good point. I wonder too what they're thinking. It will be interesting to see if he continues with this setlist or slowly introduces newer songs. I guess what surprises me is Prince's disdain for the past and not wanting to go back which I understand on some levels but his refusal to embrace the new stuff. Unless like u suggested he is out to please the crowd. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed hearing his older tunes since I haven't seen him in over 20 years. |

I've often wondered if this is Prince's way of taking a breather onstage, now he is older and can't run around, sing and play guitar for 2 hours. Which is better than plonking himself on a stool. BUt... this sampler set is getting SO tedious. Even to first timers.
I was at one of the 21 nights in London shows at the O2. I witnessed the first time he EVER did this sampler set. It suprised everyone and it was so different... it was electric. Even the band members were shocked and amazed. I could see their faces.
But that was summer 2007... 8 years ago! That's the equivilant of Lovesexy 88 to Emancipation in 1996. Can you imagine if he was doing the same medleys the emancipation era that he was during Lovesexy? NO! Thought not.
Prince you are better than this. Drop the sampler set and think of something else. I might even take the stool and an acoustic guitar!
[Edited 4/10/15 2:12am]
Tedious for first timers?! Highly unlikely.
Despite the amount of complaining about the "sampler set(s)", its very likely that a significant majority of the crowd are first or second timers or are just looking to go have fun at a concert of a legend, the more familiar songs from his playlist the better - whether they are in full or not.
It only makes sense to gear the concert for that crowd and not those - the "hardcore fans" - who are are going to find something to complain about anyway.
There is nothing wrong with the sampler set. It hypes the crowd, and I bet even several of the people that constantly get on the org to complain about it.
I believe nuthinbuttamuffin is right - the sampler set is the way that Prince takes a breather. But how about a piano set or an acoustic set like on Musicology? That was incredible! What happened to "real music played by real musicians"? Who said that? So Prince needs a kareoke machine to hype the crowd? Six songs into a gig? The first time I saw him do this was at MSG on the W2A Tour. I just thought to myself "Prince, you are better than this". As for not playing full songs, this is nothing new. Prince has been chopping up songs and playing medleys and shortened versions most of his career. There are at least 10 different versions of Purple Rain, some with intros, some without of different legnths. On the Lovesexy Tour back in '88, he motored through a bunch of songs in the first Act, playing only snippets or a verse or two of each one. Our heads were spinning trying to keep up! Please Prince, drop this hokey gimmick and keep it real! [Edited 4/13/15 23:01pm] |

It is strange, but nothing new. Prince has been doing hits based shows since the Jam of the Year tour in 1997. There isn't a tour since, that he has focused on a new album.
People always make the argument that he HAS to do the hits, that's bullshit. Madonna always goes on arena sized tours and plays a ton of new material and people still show up for her next tour.
It sucks for the hardcore fans that would like to hear the new material played live, although I never expected or wanted to hear any 3RDEYEGIRL songs with Hannah singing, because she can't sing. TRUE BLUE |

I thought the Act I shows worked well as far as playing both new material and hits. The 1st half of the show focused on the latest album. Then after an intermission focus on the hits. Lovesexy Tour was like that also except the hits were played 1st. Then again both Lovesexy and the Symbol albums had more airplay than anything from AOA or PE.
.
As I said in an earlier post I'd rather hear new material and songs he normally don't do live. However the general audience don't know half that stuff and would feel cheated not getting to hear LRC, 1999, Lets Go Crazy, Purple Rain etc. Even if they are done karaoke style most people are still happy. It's not for me personally but take Detroit for example. I'm sure everyone left that show with a smile on their face. Casual and diehards alike. So in that sense he put on a great show and pleased as many as he could. Especially looking back at the long setlist. He did his job well by pleasing as many people as he could. That's the goal of any live performer.
.
So I thought yeah he needs two shows. One for the hardcores and one for the casual general audience. Then I thought to myself hell I'd have to buy tickets for both! "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I'm just 2 old 2 hold the knife!" |

I was just about to say that too. I saw the ONA tour at the Detroit Opera House, and was fortunate enough to attend the soundcheck too (special perk from NPGMC membership that year).
.
He started off the concert by saying "If you came to get your Purple Rain on, you're in the wrong house".
.
He then proceeded to perform most of TRC and ONA. Such a great show! |

I guess thats one thing that Prince is isn't as good at as other artists. I just saw Mellencamp and he played 21 songs and only 11 of them were hits. I didnt know the new album but it sounded great anyway. I ended up buying the new Cd afterwards. I really like artists that play where they are at now and don't stritctly live in the past. I guess Prince has fallen into that legends class where all he can do is play his past or people won't like it. It says alot for artists who can play stuff that people don't know and making them like it vs those who can't. Prince used to be like that but things do change i suppose. I really don't think that out of 45 songs playing 6-8 newer songs is asking too much.
[Edited 4/12/15 6:03am]
I just saw Mellencamp too. He's got less than 1 percent of Prince's talent, but he doesn't pull any
moron BS like Karaoke, or having a great background singer who is shouting "Put Your Hands Up," Over and Over and Over until you can't believe the self-parody.
But on Prince's best nights, he's the best there is by far. Many of the 2013-14 3EG shows are proof
Prince can be awesome when he wants. And other shows, he can be pretty annoying. It's just what
I've come to expect. If I could have afforded it, I would have seen every single 2002 and 2004 show... but felt like I got half baked Prince in 2011...some great brilliant moments, and some total
buffoonery. |

Yes ONA was the last tour that he actually had faith in his new material. But he made those ridiculous statements about Purple Rain, and then proceeded to play that song, Take Me With U, and The Beautiful Ones. So playing 33% of an album he told fans not to get ready for is typical dumbed down Prince talk...but the shows were among the best of his career. So BS forgiven. |

This is absolutely not true. It was not a full version of "For You". It was just like on the Nude Tour when little recorded snippets of his songs were played as an Intro to the show. They would play little snippets then they would slow down and go into the next one.
It was a new taped intro to the show, again, similar to how he opened the Nude Tour.
I'll stand by my "intelligence" as he was in the orchestra pit right at the stage and was able to see thru the sheer curtain.
Your "intelligence" is poor then as this is absolutely not what happened. Let me tell you what happened.
After Judith Hill's set, some repetetive orchestral music played.
When Prince's set started, a PRE-RECORDED tape played that had FALSE STARTS of "For You" into "1999" into "Let's Go Crazy" then into a new song, something about a "million dollar show".
It was very similar to the Nude Tour, a pre-recorded into to the show that started "All of this and more is for you" and then it slowed down into the next song, the intro to "1999".
I was at the show, I know 100% what happened and the band absolutely DID NOT play "For You".

The setlists at Paisley Park are very similar to the concerts. We usually will get a chunk of a normal show. From AOA we've had Clouds, Breakdown, Breakfast Can't Wait, and Funknroll. From PE we've had Wow, Pretzelbodylogic, PlectrumElectrum, Fixurlifeup, and Funknroll. That's been over 9 shows in 2 years. I'm pretty sure all of those have been played elsewhere at some point or another.
If there was anywhere that he could do a whole show of new songs and people would be into it, it would be at Paisley Park. That's not happening either, though. I can't say why he won't play new material. Don't get me wrong, I still have a blast when he's doing the same old songs he's been doing for years, it would just be nice if he would change it up a bit.
I know Prince is his own boss and does whatever he wants to do, but who does an album release party live for the world to see and plays a total of 4 songs and 3 of them aren't even on the album??? I'll never figure it out. TRUE BLUE |

The people around me was grooving to Clouds. I would not say noone was feeling it because in my immediate area everyone was bobbing their head or dancing. Its not the type of song you lose you mind over like Lets Go Crazy. Its a slower vibe song that needs to breathe to get into and jam on. People expect to hear some of the new songs at shows. Its up to the artist to sell it to them from their. He could have easily left out Play That Funky Music, Thank you for letting me be myself, what have you done for me lately, which way is up and Its alright and played Wow, Another Love, The Gold Standard, Marz and Funknroll and tear them up. Noone can tell me that if he blistered a solo at the end of Another Love or Wow that people would not like it. The Gold Standard and Funkn roll would be a funk jam that would have everyone dancing similiar to 1+1+1=3. Marz is just a hard rocker that could easily follow something like Lets go crazy for abang of an opener!! He would blow people away with these live!! Cut the cover, you still get a plethera of hits and sell/play SOME new music for the potential buyers and hardcore fans. Everyone is happy. For the people on here that just ABSOLUTELY refuse to give ANYTHING past 1991 a chance its your perfect chance on the new songs to go to the restroom or get you another beer so you can sing your ass off on Purple Rain. For me the beer run songs was the Sampler sets and Nothing Compares 2 U. [Edited 4/12/15 21:24pm] |

Haha! If Hannah sang, it would definitely be bathroom/drink run time! For those complaining about all of the hits, it could be worse. Much worse. You could have to listen to loudmouth Shelby doing Michael Jackson covers! Although I think the two latest albums are duds, I do agree with others here that some of the rockers on PE would fit right in with some of his other songs. The one thing that I get a kick out of is when people on here compare his actions to what other artists do: he should play a regular tour, he should mix in his new tunes etc... He's Prince who does things his own way, not the way others think he should. That's what makes him so damn cool! Even though his music doesn't sell much anymore, we all still try and buy tix online & line up for his shows. Even though I hate those idiotic sampler sets and he rarely plays any of the songs that I really want to hear, I'm always ready to go see him rock the house. [Edited 4/13/15 22:59pm] |

I almost forgot about the million dollar show bit before the curtain "dropped" (was sucked up into the ceiling, which was kinda cool). Probably because that song snippet was literally only a few seconds long. I think it was probably just an intro recorded for concerts, not an actual song though.
.
Do you have any idea what the song was playing as the house lights came on and people were leaving? The vocals sounded somewhat sped up over a techno-futuristic-type background. I had never heard it before. Lyrics something along the lines of "It's time to leave"? |

I almost forgot about the million dollar show bit before the curtain "dropped" (was sucked up into the ceiling, which was kinda cool). Probably because that song snippet was literally only a few seconds long. I think it was probably just an intro recorded for concerts, not an actual song though.

"Shut This Down." Or "Shut it Down," I'm not sure which. Great song, hope he releases it! The vocals remind me of "My Name Is Prince," in a good way. |

That WAS a great jam. Wish he'd played that instead of MJ covers. |

Isn't fucking with someones personal property illegal? Somebody should try the courts.
4th Amendment suckas.
I don't get how the band is seen as weak. Hannah really smashes those cans, the other girl plays great guitar, the foreign girl can do good bass. I'm smelling a hint of sexism from the peeps. All you others say Hell Yea!! |

But she appears to be STRUGGLING every time I see her play. Like it's a lot of work. I know it isn't, it's just her body language. She does not make it look easy like Prince does. |

Does anyone know what the piped in music before the concert began? It sounded like jazz fusion or something. It was driving my sister crazy at the concert because it was continuous... I tolld her I would find out for her.
I told her I didn't think it was Prince's... |
