"Note to Prince and his Fans."

City Winery would like to make sure that it is clear that the six show residency is for New Power Generation, Shelby J., Liv Warfield and NPG Hornz. These shows are not "Prince" shows. When we found out that Prince was confirmed to appear at the venue, we hastily announced late last night that the show was a Prince performance. This was not the initial plan, and Prince was only scheduled to come as a special guest. Out of respect for his fans, Prince decided to perform and not disappoint the attendees.

City Winery would like to make sure that the Friday and Sunday night shows remain as they were originally billed: "New Power Generation, Shelby. J., Liv Warfield and NPG Hornz w/ Special Celebrity Guests Nightly". We apologize for any inconvenience this communication may have caused and we appreciate that Prince values his fans so much, that he performed last night, and went beyond anyone’s expectation delivering an epic experience for people. He really is the world’s greatest artist and we are humbled to be part of these historic shows.

Sincerely, Michael Dorf, Shlomo Lipetz and the entire City Winery team.

This whole thing is kind of a mess, isn't it? Props to Prince, though, if he really hadn't intended to perform Thursday night and only did it because Michael Dorf misled people. I think I will avoid Michael Dorf productions from now on!

I don't think Dorf is the issue here....Prince's people told Dorf that he was going to perform on Thursday (I got an email from Dorf's folks stating that P was a sure bet to appear)....Once the Tweet went out, that place got REALLY packed....

So Dorf had nothing to do with making P show up because he (Dorf) somehow misled the public....

The "mess" that you alluded to came about because a Prince affiliated act (NPG) was selling high priced tickets for a series of gigs that usually comes when said act is of a superstar level....Novice fans paying $200 plus for those shows were not there for Shelby and company...They were there because, right or wrong, they expected Prince to perform....

BTW...Prince was pretty fucking dope that night...Smiling and in good spirits....

We went last night and I must say we were rather disappointed. Not so much because Prince did not show up, we did not think he would, I'm just not sure why the band was called NPG? I did not recognize one musician up there and I've seen the real NPG many times. There were a ton of horn players and they were all decent but no one really stood out. Same for the entire band. It seemed like a soul/funk revue that you would see at a wedding or at a casino. Shelby and Liv were ok but you can see why they are backup singers. And who exactly were the "special guests"? We did not see any. When they finished abruptly most thought that another set was going to be played with some guests but all we got was this awful dj mixing Prince songs with Beyonce and other lousy music. All in all it was basically a waste of time and $80. I'm really surprised that Prince would attach his name to something as mediocre as this.

Yes it is Friday night's show that they are talking about. It's interesting too because I suppose someone might get confused by the NPG not being the NPG. Then again, the NPG always changes. But casual fans might not know that. The price was too high, but then again they probably had to give at least some money to the 25 or so people on stage.

I know NPG changes but these seemed like all new musicians. The only one is knew was Ryan waters who plays with Sade not Prince. He hasn't even used another guitarist in a while except for Donna.

I guess the question is: when Dorf's folks sent you that email - saying P was a sure bet to appear - was it written so that "appear" seemed like "perform"? Big difference. Not sure from which end this misunderstanding arose.

P.S. If he doesn't play on Sunday, a lot of people will be upset, I think. Though that was risk they took. I still think the whole concept (especially the high ticket prices) was a mistake, and I partly blame Dorf and City Winery.

Again...I think people's beef (if they have one) should be with Prince and his team...Not City Winery....

There was no misunderstanding in terms of Dorf and his team...By the first shows it was obvious it was an NPG gig (from the website to the billing), with special guests...One such special guest was Alice Smith who basically blew the NPG vocalists off the stage....

That Prince announcement was dropped the same night of the Thursday NPG show...It was Tweeted it out that night...And the fans came out in droves....AND PRINCE ACTUALLY PERFORMED....I think u r confusing things....It was NOT announced that Prince would perform on Friday...Or even this upcoming Sunday....Ya dig?

Again, the real issue is P and his team thinking that novice fans would be cool with dropping all of that money to see his backup singers....It's no wonder that they thought Prince was coming on Friday (which again, was never promoted that way)...They expected it because of the high ticket prices...

The Winery wrote that letter to let fans know to NOT TO EXPECT PRINCE TO SHOW UP JUST BECAUSE HE CAME OUT THURSDAY.....

Because, you know, that's what fans expect from Prince and his team if they are charging rates that platinum artists rarely charge for small clubs....

But yeah...I expected this foolishness as soon as I saw those crazy ticket prices...lol

Hi There. I too was at the show last night (Friday) and I can tell you Wednesdays show was a million times better. Last night was odd but I'm not sure why. The crowd to me also seem subdued compared to the high energy audience we experienced on Wednesday. I did like te solos the horn players did. Also the arrangments of the songs may have been a factor, but like I said, Wednesday, everything was perfect.

I believe the correct statement was that Michael Dorf has been inviting Prince to Ciy Winery over the past number of years and Prince (he jokingly said "mfer) never showed up.

Yes, Wednesday's show was better, audience response wise, moreso because I think on Friday, many who came to that show probably thought Prince was going to show up, and I'm just basing that on the conversations I heard from some fans standing on line outside the winery, and within while the show was going on. However, that also could be due to the vague advertisement and misinformation some fans read on different twitter pages, and elsewehere, where little hints and clues were being confused for a possibility he may show up, and some fans will take that unconfirmed info and run with it.

Just to clarify, my comments are not in anyway to present a negative view, but more or less just stating that the advertisement of the show sort of misled or confused some fans, so maybe the promoters should just look into how they can avoid that next time. I also hope they don't take the route of 'snubbery' against fans, who express their opinions or raise questions about the way the advertisement changed, because the promoters have to remember that the fans are consumers and supporters of artists' music, and have a right to question something they paid for, where the advertisement was later changed, and led to the questioning and confusion of it in the first place. Music fans are consumers, and their opinions matter, especially when promoters want them to pay for a show that is advertised. Like another fan mentioned, New York fans can be forgiving but they don't forget, and it is no secret, that New York can make or break an artist/musician and even promoters.

Also, in the advertisement, they said special guests every night, but there was no special guest on Friday night. Maybe something prevented that, who knows, but I still enjoyed myself. I do think whomever the non-Prince related Prince camp, promoters are behind all the promotion/advertisement for that show, should have dotted their 'i's' and crossed their 't's' to make sure there wasn't any misguided info, before releasing the end product, to avoid vague advertising/misinformation/confusion for ticket buyers. Also they should have checked with the Prince camp to clarify what was/was not allowed in the advertisement. A little more time, effort and organization into 'checking the details', before releasing the info doesn't hurt. So I wasn't surprised at the lower, level of energetic response compared to Wednesday's show, because it was clear there were many there on Friday, that came to the show with those types of expectations. For me though, if the info is not confirmed from an official source, then it just isn't happening, so I already knew that wasn't going to happen. I am not saying that the audience response to the show on Friday, wasn' t because the entire npg band didn't work their azzes off on Friday, because they did, and their energy wore me out in a good way. lol I have to agree with you though, that many in the audience wasn't sure if the show was actually over when it ended, because of the way it abruptly ended. Okay, rant over. So glad I chose the Wednesday show, and going to Friday's show was unexpected, but enjoyed both shows anyway, despite some advertisement mishaps. smile

I have to say, that Ms. Liv Warfield is a badazz. I bought her single 'I decided' this week, but I can't find her song 'Why do you lie?' anywhere, and I want to buy it, but don't know if she even released it yet. After watching her perform that song, and Ryan Waters rocking out with her, I have convinced myself that Liv is the new Betty Davis. I don't see the industry promoting anyone with her and Shelby's style, and that's what's missing in the industry right now. Soul singers with the natural ability to bring it. Liv has it all....the soul, funk, blues-rock styles, and her performance style is outstanding. Liv and Shelby on stage together are two powerhouses, and I appreciate them.

So glad I chose the Wednesday show, and going to Friday's show was unexpected, but enjoyed it anyway.

Guess that's just the way it is sometimes.

Also, in the advertisement, they said special guests every night, but there was no special guest on Friday night. I said the whole band worked hard, and yes including Cassie. I couldn't really see Cassie on stage during Wednesday's show, because her keyboard was blocking my view. On Friday, as I was standing on the far right side of stage, so couldn't see her at all, but heard her sing a little more, than she did on Wednesday. So it's all good, she did her part, and like I said, that band works hard, and I enjoyed both shows. I didn't make any plans to attend tonight's show, because I'm worn out just from the two I attended, lol, so those going, have a great time! smile

Oh and despite what I stated in my previous post, I have to give a shoutout and thanks to the entire NPG band, especially Liv and Shelby J, for coming to NYC and giving us their best. I appreciate all of them and their talent. They have so much energy, they could roll it up in a candy bar and sell it.

Nothing compared to seeing her sing/perform live though. She has a very, sultry sound. She doesn't hold back. Like I said, she's the new Betty Davis, without a doubt. Liv Warfield--The funk/soul and blues rock Queen. No need to say 'Amen', she already earned that.

Well I guess that's good to hear. We all agreed that Friday night was not very good and it was a waste of money. I can't imagine Prince using that band for his own shows. The women are decent singers but are not very unique at all. And again, where were the "special guests"? They needed someone to change thing up. And what was up with that ending? They just kinda stopped playing and that terrible dj started spinning. I guess you live and learn.

Awesome song. I just bought it. Now wondering if she released "Why do you lie?" and where can I find it.
