okay ..anything in the recent years was a show like that and even at those shows u mentioned there were covers played including the santana medley, the jam. so i'm asking in the recent years from 2004 to present has there been a complete aftershow where us hardcore fans could just hear prince's material and not one hit song?

I feel sorry 4 him. He can't seem to please his fans anymore. No wonder he has abandoned them & caters to the entertainers & casual fans that appreciate him more. Who cares if he wants to play his hits or mix them together with obscure tunes or covers. He is still able to play. So appreciate it or just don't go at all.

Couldn't agree more! I remember meeting up with a friend after the ONA show here in Seattle....she was SO angry at the lack of hits, and said that it was the worst concert she'd ever seen. I was shocked, as I really thought it was not only the best Prince show that I'd seen, but the best show period.

It doesn't matter the main focus was the unreleased material. Back then I remember people complaining that Prince wasn't playing his hits enough. Not there saying he is playing them too much.

I agree, it's hard to please the fans. I honestly think he is doing with he thinks what's best. But I still believe he maybe should change some things. I think the setlists should contain 50 % hits and 50 % unreleased/album tracks etc. and than 2 covers in the setlist or something so 10 hits and 10 unreleased/album tracks etc and 2 covers, would be a great setlist(no matter what he plays)!

I think that would be good mix. Something for the casual fans and something for the diehards.I have been to many concerts in my life, and most concerts I have seen are like that/well not all 50/50 but with new album material from the album they are on tour with. Even from the artists that are from 80's and actually only known for their 80's hits. From my concert experience, I expected Prince to do the same when I went to his concert for the first time(I didn't knew anything at all. I was used to acts with same setlists every night.

That's why I didn't look for setlists from Prince, because I mostly want to be surprised) and that didn't really happen, well I did heard some new tunes at Prince his concerts and also the first Prince concert I went to btw, but it was mostly hits and stuff. Great for casual fans, but there should be more a mix. But that's my option. I love his concerts. I love going to them even when he plays songs I have heard many many times. But I would prefer this kind of setlist over a only hits setlist, imo.

He does deserve credit for mixing up his shows on a night to night basis. Many artists that do hits shows replicate each show night after night, often right down to the things they say to the audience. Prince doesn't go out there and play the exact same 15-20 songs in the exact same order. Still, I can't help wishing that he would play more new stuff. He could cherry pick the best 2-3 songs from his recent albums and mix them in with the hits.

I wasn't conscious that I was bitchin'.

I was under the impression I made myself very clear that I think Prince is an amazing musician and performer. And that, although, imo, he has a good band, it's not an amazing mind blowing band.

And that I don't judge these choices at all, it's clearly understandable. And also his setlist during shows is understandable. It's like Prince said: it's just not cool to play the music people don't want to hear. He knows that stadiums are filled with casual fans and/or just music lovers who are there to hear his hits.

He wants to give them a great evening, because he realizes that buying these tickets for 90% of the audiance is big amount of money to spend. It's only 1% who can pay the VIP tickets (yes, I intentionally say 1% in order to remind the occupy movement wink

It's just that he is doing a good job at something he knows he's good at. Routine.

And there are still people who think he can challenge himself and push his talent to the limits. However, that might involve cooperating with a producer. And putting himself under a lot of stress again. It's only natural he chooses not to. However, why can't his fans point this out, without getting so much hatred poured over us?

I really didn't read that anybody was saying he is not a good artist or anything like that.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I agree, I mean he should not play same setlist every night but more a mix of new/album tracks and old/hits songs that's what I mean actually. wink

Exactly!

The ONA tour was focused mainly on his Rainbow Children album with a few hits & rare tunes springled in.It was a tour designed 4 the diehards plus soundchecks that included his loyal fans. But my girlfriend at the time hated it, she wanted to hear the old hits more. So it seems he can't win 4 losing. Prince will never be able to please everybody. Its just because he always did the unexpected. Now he is suffering from being that way. With the whiny diehards. No one appreciated that ONA tour. I certainly did. He was very accommodating and in rare open form. But its quickly forgotten now. There back to complaining again. The unloyal diehards.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

i remember quite clearly some girl complaining 2 me after witnessing pure bliss that he didn't do LRC. so i get u on that. i'm saying as some others in this thread have stated, we know he still does new music and has done songs past the early 90's. what better way 2 use this type of venue 2 introduce a WHOLE NEW GENERATION THAT HE'S STILL DOING MUSIC? it just seems like a waste 2 relegate his legacy to only a few years instead of 30 plus

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

or a tour like lovesexy or act 1 where one set was devoted 2 either hits or the current music. what u describe is a very logical approach so that it touches on all levels

She hated the show, and was furious that he didn't play 'Purple Rain', 'LRC', etc....walking out of that theater feeling any less than elated seemed, at the time, unconscionable to me. The show was amazing, and the musicianship was top notch.

i disagree cause I LOVED THE ONA TOUR AND THE AFTERSHOWS WERE MINDBLOWING! and a lot of orgers loved that tour as well. the north american tour of it leading up to the xenophobia celebration at paisley it was off the chain. when it got 2 europe more hits became mixed in the set which i feel suffered some and the live album was a shell of what that tour really was.

she should have been at the show i was at in NYC when he did purple rain and half the crowd was standing half wasn't. or maybe during xenophobia when he stated "this is not 1984 if ur looking 4 ur purple rain u better hit the door THIS AIN'T THAT TYPE OF PARTY"

i truly feel the majority of the world has missed out on pure gems of prince's legacy due 2 various reasons that she missed out on a fantastic show like the ONA tour

See, back then, the hits weren't THAT old, so I'm sure they did want a few of the hits (but definitely not ONLY them either). Nowadays, Prince has been playing the SAME ol' tired hits and arrangements (minus LRC) for SEVEN years straight now! So yeah, we ARE going to be tired of hearing the same hits, time after time after time.

Yeah, that shit was hot, wasn't it? And you know what? He was introducing tracks into the setlist that he hadn't played in YEARS!!!! And the 2002 Celly def was off the chain too, wasn't it? It was definitely the best period of his live career since the 93-96 NPG days. The religious and preachy lyrics were a little fuckin' much, but musically and song selection-wise, shit wasn't bad at all back then.

He's been playing to arenas with all-hits shows and shit like that for the past 7 years. It's about time he goes back to playing some more intimate venues with a much stronger setlist. And do it with the remnants of the SOTT/Lovesexy band or the 93-96 NPG band. None of that boring jazz-lite Renato shit, either!! cool

I dont know why every thread denigrates to this, but it should be established knowledge by now that die hard orgers aren't the ones who are going to be buying up all the seats at these shows so he can't cater to just you all unless he goes back to the smaller club format for another one of those types of tours.

Renato has that same moody jazzy feel that Lisa had. I loved that moody chord solo she played on the 1999 tour. But Morris Hayes is good to. But never gets any credit. He been with Prince longer than any other keyboard player. He also set Prince up with Bria & played on her half a million sold debut Cd Elixer. My favorite keyboard players is Lisa & Dr. Fink(his solos can never be duplicated)

As far as technical chops go Renato may be the "best" keyboardist that Prince has worked with but for some his playing is too mechanical and lacks emotion. Technical ability is no substitute for the ability to make listeners feel your playing.

It doesn't matter the main focus was the unreleased material. Back then I remember people complaining that Prince wasn't playing his hits enough. Not there saying he is playing them too much.

Very well said. nod clapping

It goes both ways, you know. If you don't like the "bitching", then skip over the fucking post!!

Yeah...the problem is that you can't swing a dead cat around the Org without running into whiners. PS...no need for the F-bomb.

#1, the "F-bomb" is just how I talk at times, so it was just another word that was used. No biggie.

#2, I think you mean - without running into people with opinions and aren't afraid to freely express them, regardless of if it's the majority/popular opinion or not. Not whiners. I mean, we're all tired of the people who whine about the so-called "whiners". So, I guess we're all just going to have to live with it.

Heh...I think Renato is a FANTASTIC player. His solos during the Monterux DVDs are simply mindblowing. In fact, I think he might be the best musician P's had since Lisa. Agree to disagree.

Exactamundo! You took the words right out of my mouth. His playing is very dry and vanilla. There's just not much feeling there. THAT'S why I'm not a big fan of Renato. Very talented, yes. But, NONE of his playing has ever moved me.

Oh God. Please don't tell me you're going there now. Please don't tell me you're going to say that Bria's debut CD sold half a mil!! Also, I wouldn't tout that as a plus for Morris, either. But, I don't really have a problem with Morris. He and a Hammond is not a bad combo at all!

I would have to disagree. I would not consider Renato one of my favorite keyboardist but he definately is not mechanical. Got to see him play up close and personal at the 3121 afterparties, the first night whoa!! eek, plus concerts in person and ones I've seen through boots. Pretty amazing.

i disagree cause I LOVED THE ONA TOUR AND THE AFTERSHOWS WERE MINDBLOWING! and a lot of orgers loved that tour as well. the north american tour of it leading up to the xenophobia celebration at paisley it was off the chain. when it got 2 europe more hits became mixed in the set which i feel suffered some and the live album was a shell of what that tour really was.

None of that boring jazz-lite Renato shit, either!! cool

i agree that a smaller theater tour is needed next and pronto ..kick the hits and the covers 2 the side

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The man is eradicating his live reputation now

Except every review I've read thats been published has been extremely positive... I think you're getting ahead of yourself.

they are postive only cause they only mention when he does lgc or 1999..i didn't see one review mentioning when he was here in ny about when he did dreamer, welcome 2 america, gingerbread man ..none of that
