ehhhhh the chants in controversy barely count, 'cause they're part of the live version of the song (similar to the 'slow down' part in LRC). During the Montreal show I saw, it seemed like she was interjecting all through the show. As I remember it, that wasn't the case last night.

Regarding the covers - I thought I wouldn't like them, but I really did. All the covers Prince played** I think came in one big medley (that also included Alphabet St), where Prince was playing a lot of funky guitar which I really like. I found that seeing/hearing the whole building sing 'play that funky music' was impressive enough for me to forget about wanting to hear specific Prince songs.

The covers the ladies sang came during the costume changes, right? I don't understand the need for a costume change, but if Prince has to do it, this is probably one of the better ways to handle it. If there's going to be live music while Prince puts on a different tunic, it has to be the ladies singing. And there are two choices for what songs they can sing - a Prince song or a cover. I think people would be more upset if they sang a Prince song.

HUGE FLOP for me!!!!! I made 4 NY shows & paid some SERIOUS coinage to take my kids last night, table seat for all four of us.

The energy level was LOW compare to NY shows. He pretty much played everything from the Purple Rain album & very little else. I got the impression he was in a bad mood!?!? After reading the reviews from Fridays show, I'm so happy i didn't go to both.

He spent maybe 15 mins on the piano (laying/ dancing on it) & probably 2-3 mins playing it. The rest of the time he was with his guitar, singing or dancing.

I feel seriously let down, i didn't go to hear covers. I wanted to Hear Princes music.

No opening act????

As for the security???? WTF????????? I took a picture of MY DAUGHTER, my back was to the stage as I took it & was threatened with being kicked out, the guy tried to take my camera off me?!?!?!?!

Good observation. But the main differences, IMO, between him and an "oldies act" is that he still has what it takes to deliver a great show, and it is his "self sabotage mode" that is so frustrating for many of us long time followers. He´s proven time and time again that he can always come back and convince most of us with a quality show (or even album) when we don´t expect it anymore. Sometimes it takes a while, or even years but the talent and skills are still there, buried underneath the attitude, arrogance and laziness, for lack of better words.

What made the concert even better for myself and a buddy of mine was the fact that there was two blonde girls behind us (one was hot and cool the other was just a bitter person who didn't talk to anyone).

The hot girl's line to me was...."your not my kinda guy at all and Im not hitting on you or anything but since you like Prince, that makes you hot"

...for all the fellas out there Prince brings the ladies in...no question about it. Just made me think of the line from Dirty Mind "I may not be your kinda man, I may not be your style...."

I would love to hear/see him cooperate with a producer again. Working together with someone doesn't mean he has to obey. There is something like cooperating and/or maybe some fights during the makin process that gets the energy flowing to create good stuf.

I think Prince working with a producer could benefit his output. It's not about Prince not being good enough. It's about the stimulation, stirring up, provoking that forces him to rise up to the highest levels his talent allows him to go to.

A good producer can do that. And hopefully that will go with a stir. That only can make him better.

yes, the input of some one else would have a huge positive effect on his music. tension and disagreement lead to creativity, point taken.

as for the #1 hit, it would be cool and even though Prince publically puts forth the sensation that he has contempt for established charts, etc., "hits" are important to him, as he constantly mentions them in his shows.

i accept him for what he is doing now, and love his releases. i am envious of those who are able to see him live, as it's been years for me. but, i don't think he has to prove he is out there...he is out there. as he has been doing for 30 years, he is known for his skills and craftmanship as a musician, and there is no doubting that.

he is in the category of the Grateful Dead, who had 3 generations of music that they pulled from through constant touring, but they also had their regulars and crowd favorites.

It's interesting to see that being all fans of Prince, we have different opinions of what we are expecting from his shows. I had fun seeing him for the first time on Friday, and was especially thrilled by the 7 encores, but as a guitar player myself, I needed the sound of last night, this was the touch that was missing for me on Friday, not enough riff chords on that night. I couldn't be a fan without the Hohner Telecaster.

I don't mind all the covers, but is figuring out though how come someone so prolific would spend 2/3 of the show playing song of the others ???

I totally enjoyed him laying on the piano, he was hotter than words, i also really enjoy him playing it & generally showing off his versatility, i just don't think he did during this show.

The set lists & security were my main issues. I WAS TOLD TO SIT IN MY SEAT AT ONE POINT!!!! I'd found myself a little space, right next to the stage, ensuring I wasn't blocking anyones view. Doing what comes natural at a Prince show, DANCING. A long came a security chat & said 'for safety reasons, i need you to sit down' ?????? IT'S A PRINCE CONCERT, how can you 'sit down'???

To be honest, three shows at MSG really were 3 of the best nights of my life. I wasn't expecting this to be on the same level.

I'm not alone in my thoughts, i'd say 60% of the table section (our section anyway) were not thrilled. Mainly due to security acting like angry dogs.

I think Prince may have put more into NY concerts due to the celebrities that were there. I don't know. I heard he had a beef with the sound guy the night before. Something was pissing him off. For me, he was lacking his umpfff.

However, he is Prince & I did enjoy it, just not every miniute of it, which is new for me.... 26 years of Purple loving & my first bad show. Not too bad when I put it like that!

One bonus was the VIP goodie bag. 100 x better than the Welcome to America goodies!

I'm sure you'll have a blast at your show! I hope he's in a better mood!

u may want 2 look closely at what each review is saying, "he played let's go crazy etc.. rarely will they mention when he does his current material" so it's not really a rave its more of saying "he's doing what we tell him 2 do otherwise his concert is bullshit" ..now if u read the reviews he got for ONA then u got something but him doing the hits over and over is rarely a rave review it's more of "prince is a greatest hits act only" not the same prince who broke down the walls of what is 2 be

Gates were closed till roughly 8 and the show began with quite a cool start. The lights dimmed maybe three times and came back on before the girls began with the first song of the night. D.m.s.r was a highlight for my 17 year old as that is one of his favorite songs. P was flying around the stage in the 15 minute version of musicology and had a dance number mid way. P 's guitar and sound were solid for the first nigh of the tour, my son also plays guitar and he felt the hohner was pretty ice picky and trebly which made for mind blowing solos as much as ear paining sound. Of course he played the hits and the fans were loving it, I have seen P play 11 times in total since 1988 and would have liked to hear some new stuff but I understand why he played what he did. During the 6 encores is when I felt like prince was having the most fun, dancing on the piano and just boogieing. The sample set was cool as well as the time covers, let's work was a great way to end the show and had everyone wishing for more. All and all Fridays show was a 3 hour dance party. What ensued next was a prince fans wildest dreams. I had booked our hotel at the ritz Carleton hoping the purple yoda would be around. I didn't get into the after show but learned from a bell boy that indeed prince was staying on the 19th floor. Two big suburbans had been around all day as well. At roughly 245am the suburban pulled up for the 30th time. I went to see if maybe he was coming from the lobby. I didn't do the most appeasing walk as i was trying to give my son some yuks. The door opened and a boot stepped down, ( my son called me as I had turned my head after walking back to where we were sitting, he said its him Mom , it's him.) prince got outta of the suburban holding Andy's hand while my son aand I could only watch and be amazed, ( was about damn time we'd been out there a few hours and I had smoked a good number of cigarettes ) I yelled we love you prince as he entered the door, he smiled at andy as I called out. My son and I froze in time and then just smiled and laughed. This had completed our night. Sadly we only got one picture, pretty badly taken because of the shock we were in as well as trying not to make it too terribly obvious. Check Saturday's review for a better story about my sons chance with prince. Saturdays show: again delayed by whatever the reason prince did not get on till 9, opening with gold was cool we he was dressed in his gold pants and gold dress shirt. The sound had drastically improved, princes guitar has a fuller sound and his voice as well as band sounded tighter tonight. The set was great p played more guitar and even places the orange strat (my sons favorite) which sounded better than the hohner in my opinion. He played that on a stirring version of crimson and clover, with a very heavy solo , shhh as well featured great soloing and guitar work. Throughout the night prince seemed to feature a more distinct and planned set, he ripped through the funk with the twanged tele and had us all wanting more. I feel as if some fans expected 6 encores as well, no one seemed to leave after each set was done. I Almost didn't think he'd do the sampler but the encore clapping was a good 5 minutes at least. The sampler set ended with a dance to kiss. I should mention that both Friday and Saturday we sat about 6 rows up from the point of the stage. One night dead on the other off set to the right. Perfect seats in my opinion because when he was close man was he close and when he was far you could still see what he was doing as well as the lighting was easily seen. My son bought me a surprise ticket to the after show, I went and it was pretty cool, I didn't even realize prince was there till reading the org today, I just heard his voice. Saturdays show was more guitar heavy Sunday we flew out but not before getting one more glance at prince. Once again our bell boy had told us he was leaving around 330. My 17 year old stuck it out in the lobby and at 355 prince walked dead infront of him for a good twenty feet and starred him directly in the eye. He couldn't take a picture for two reasons. 1. Security was tight and 2. It was prince looking directly at him!!! Can't wait to read about rest of the shows. Sorry to drag on!

The door opened and a boot stepped down, ( my son called me as I had turned my head after walking back to where we were sitting, he said its him Mom , it's him.) prince got outta of the suburban holding Andy's hand while my son aand I could only watch and be amazed, ( was about damn time we'd been out there a few hours and I had smoked a good number of cigarettes ) I yelled we love you prince as he entered the door, he smiled at andy as I called out. My son and I froze in time and then just smiled and laughed. This had completed our night. Sadly we only got one picture, pretty badly taken because of the shock we were in as well as trying not to make it too terribly obvious. Check Saturday's review for a better story about my sons chance with prince. Saturdays show: again delayed by whatever the reason prince did not get on till 9, opening with gold was cool we he was dressed in his gold pants and gold dress shirt. The sound had drastically improved, princes guitar has a fuller sound and his voice as well as band sounded tighter tonight. The set was great p played more guitar and even places the orange strat (my sons favorite) which sounded better than the hohner in my opinion. He played that on a stirring version of crimson and clover, with a very heavy solo , shhh as well featured great soloing and guitar work. Throughout the night prince seemed to feature a more distinct and planned set, he ripped through the funk with the twanged tele and had us all wanting more. I feel as if some fans expected 6 encores as well, no one seemed to leave after each set was done. I Almost didn't think he'd do the sampler but the encore clapping was a good 5 minutes at least. The sampler set ended with a dance to kiss. I should mention that both Friday and Saturday we sat about 6 rows up from the point of the stage. One night dead on the other off set to the right. Perfect seats in my opinion because when he was close man was he close and when he was far you could still see what he was doing as well as the lighting was easily seen. My son bought me a surprise ticket to the after show, I went and it was pretty cool, I didn't even realize prince was there till reading the org today, I just heard his voice. Saturdays show was more guitar heavy Sunday we flew out but not before getting one more glance at prince. Once again our bell boy had told us he was leaving around 330. My 17 year old stuck it out in the lobby and at 355 prince walked dead infront of him for a good twenty feet and starred him directly in the eye. He couldn't take a picture for two reasons. 1. Security was tight and 2. It was prince looking directly at him!!! Can't wait to read about rest of the shows. Sorry to drag on!

Glad u & ur son had the chance 2 witness the genius in the flesh close up...So hand & hand with Andy @ his hotel huh? Hmmmm interesting!
