Like L4OA said, he's content on being very run-of-the-mill, and he'll continue to do so if people, fams, like you continue to slurp his nuts at EVERY little thing he does. We know he's got it in him to be soooo much better and more challenging, but as long as he's got his faithful little contingent praising even his crap and boring shit, he'll never push himself. The people he surrounds himself with are the same way as well. But at least they have an excuse. They wanna keep their job.

What's next? He's 80 and in a wheelchair, but he can still push himself out there and play "The Cow Jumps Over The Moon" and say "push it up", and you guys'll be like, "Oh my Gawd!! He's the the greatest ever! Who else is doing that at 80?! Huh? Who? He's better than he was during even the Parade or SOTT eras!! All praise to Lord Prince (and his on-stage nurse)!!" rolleyes

biggrin

Well Little Richard(who use 2 cum 2 this site) is in a wheelchair and he is still working sometimes. I will still be there when Prince turns 80 waving my purple flag giggle . I know he will still be playing killer guitar & keyboards even in a wheelchair @ 80.He is one artist that don't need all the theatrics all the time.He can just sit there and play instruments & entertain people 4 hours. People will be content at just watching him do that. U want the Lovesexy/SOTT Prince? Go put in the dvd.

And the sad part is that I just know you will!!

well i didn't know that having your own opinion about a concert that YOU paid for was considered being 'douchey'.

anyone that wants to pay for my ticket to the next concert is welcome to do so and i will make sure i praise his purpleness to the high heavens.

PLUS i don't remember reading ANYTHING on here that said prince sucks, or is over. what i read is that he is phoning it in and needs to step it up and go back to being the performer and innovator he once was and still is.

if you have a problem with reading anything negative about your highness...skip it

and this from a fan that went so far as to get a symbol tattoo on her back. I LOVE ME SOME PRINCE!!

my opinion - andy allo butchered bob marley. and the fact that i got $268 tickets the day of for $67, better seats and cheaper than my london show next week, shows prince is not packing them in like before. perhaps due to the high prices.

Agree, even though I loved the show on November 25th and am going to the London show (VIP) because I loved the Toronto one so much. I previously went to see Prince in 2004 and he was great, but I felt that this time was BETTER. He may not have sold out this time around for three reasons: 1) economy sucks 2) only announced about a month ago (I didn't know until my sister of all people informed me) 3) late November to mid December are more difficult to get time off from either office parties or work which is why the summer is much better for concerts.

In terms of the show,

Because some artists such as Prince have such diverse fan bases you can't please everyone. I know (and prefer) many of Prince's rarer songs like Shockadelica and Crystal Ball, but many of the other people in the $250 seats were casual fans who only know Purple Rain and When Doves Cry.

There were definitely some negatives to the show: Andy Allo is weak...she's really pretty and seems friendly, but she doesn't have stage presence and she can't play guitar well. The funk jam for 20 minutes in the first half hour I could have done without, but after that the show was amazing and everyone around me when I left was saying how awesome a show it was. I also don't like covers because HE has so many amazing songs himself, but fortunately there weren't as many covers as I was expecting.

I was pleased, but then again us Canadians have been waiting for Prince for seven years, so yes, we'd like to hear YOUR hits Prince, please.

Sometimes I get the impression that when Prince digs an audience, he 'rewards' them with hits. Of course to most people here that's a pretty lame reward, but at the shows I've been to, the majority of the audience ate it up.

In fact at the June 24th Montreal show, he didn't play any hits (except controversy) until the encores. The audience enjoyed the main set well enough, but they easily cheered loudest for the LGC block of hits. Afterwards (or maybe right before) I remember Prince saying, 'For you', or something. Like, 'yeah you guys are cool enough for me to play the stuff I'm not that interested in playing, but I know you want to hear it.'

I got the same feeling at the Toronto shows. He really, really seemed interested in putting on a good show on Saturday, but what did he play? The hits. In fact, a lot of the same hits as the night before.

It might be a little cynical to assume that Prince only cares about the casual fans, though. Probably the setlist he thinks is best has a ratio of hits to fan favourites equal to the ratio of casuals to hardcores. So that means Prince's crowd-pleasing setlist has lotsa hits and only a song or two that everyone on the org would be glad to see live.

and while I'm posting personal musing nobody cares about, how about this:

I really enjoyed myself this weekend, so I'm not going to join in with the fans who feel Prince is just a nostalgia act, but I do think they make points that are worth taking seriously. I don't think the people who want Prince to be as innovative and challenging as he was before are being downers - on the contrary! I honestly think they're being optimistic. Which is probably the most depressing realisation of all!

True, and I was loving it anyway... but I do want the hits, I know it'll wake the crowd up and I'm always happier when I see that Prince AND the crowd are having a blast!

2 Days until the show in Halifax... I'm so excited!!! biggrin

It absolutely IS douchey to expect Prince to play anything OTHER than the fricking SONGS HE FEELS LIKE FUCKING PLAYING.

And as for the joker who wrote something to the effect that it's about "squeezing the very best out of him" or whatever - seriously?? Please, get over yourself. You don't represent the majority of Prince fans. The majority of Prince fans expect him to come out and put on his show, to the best ability he is able to that night. The fact that he makes it look like a cinch aint a thing - don't be jealous just cause it would take you a million years to be able to play that well...'bout you know music. You don't know jack!! LMAO

The show was amazing. If you've seen him so many times that you can no longer rationalize being in the very very few elite who've seen him so many time so as to actually complain about a show this amazing, maybe you need to take a step back and keep your sorry critical ass home next time!

And by the way, I'm a musician, been in many bands, and have played to tens of thousands. I know good musicianship when I see it, and Prince is by FAR one of the most talented musicians I've ever seen live, and still shows it night in night out. The band was tight. Anyone on this forum saying otherwise likely has never played outside their bedroom in the basement of their mom's house. Are you serious, do you even have the slightest clue what it takes to put on a show of this magnitude? Give your head a shake, Prince has more talent than you've got in your baby pinky you wannabee rockstar who never made it! LMAO

I participate regularly on another forum of my favorite band (another huge 80s act that's still going strong, releasing albums and packing stadiums) and I always thought our fans were fucking douchey as hell about setlists etc, but you morons take the cake!! lol

I don't know if there is a textbook definition of what exactly a "nostalgia act" is but I think you have to go back to the One Nite Alone era to see shows where he was playing a significant number of new songs. It is true that virtually every tour had many "classic" hits included but he used to play lots of new songs too. He doesn't really do that anymore. At best he might play one or two songs from his current album where in the past he would play half or more of his current album live. It's only fair to point out that there are less and less people that are interested in hearing his new songs so by not playing them he is giving (most) of the audience what they want but I do think that also means he is essentially a nostalgia act. Look at his latest album, he didn't even bother releasing it in his home country.

For my money I think he could have built a great tour around the Lotusflow3r album and used it as an opportunity to do a "rock" tour. Maybe get Sonny and Michael and tour as a power trio.

I said this earlier but I think the thing that frustrates some hardcore fans is that he has been primarily doing hits based tours aimed at the casual fan since 2004. It would be great if he dug a bit deeper and put together a tour aimed at the hardcore fan. He definitely has a deep enough catalog where he could do a radically different show each night and still satisfy most hardcore fans.

Who's the other huge act still going strong? I'm curious because I really LOVE musicians that have vital 20+ year careers - I think they have a lot of wisdom about the biz and yes, it's SUPER hard to be that successful for so long. What's great is when an act can play like 15+ songs where EVERYONE in a stadium knows EVERY lyric - how amazing is it to achieve that, to know that you have impacted that many lives with your art? You're a musician - wouldn't that be amazing?

He has been singing a lot more about sex/sensuality lately and it seems like he's smitten wink

And she's singing "take me on the road, we can tour the ether" - it's not subtle. They're together.

What hardcores don't seem to understand is Prince is headed to his twilight years, He has to think logically now. It is impossible to satisfy his hardcores all the time. Even he has said that his fans expect the unexpected from him all the time. He can satisfy the hardcores at an aftershow. But his main shows have to satisfy the casual fans or they will not come back. People need there money now. They are not going to spend there hard earn money anymore to hear him sing songs they never heard b4 .

The casuals want to hear Purple Rian,1999 etc at every show. Prince has made it tolerable for him by changing the arrangements and finding new ways to play them. I will not abandon him, Just because I heard & seen him play Purple Rain a thousand times. He has to earn his funds just like the next man. GIVE HIM A BREAK!!!!!

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I'd like to see Sonny and Michael and even Tommy reunite with him to tour because they were the ones (along with Prince, of course) who got "dogged" during the Symbol years (from Come to Chaos & Disorder and all of the tracks and outtakes in between) and never really got that "mainstream adulation" that he's been getting for past few years. Yeah, they were all there for D&P, but that was mainly overseas and they were part of a bigger band back then. I'd like to see them get some of that since they were the bad that held shit down Prince's darkest hour, regarding his recording career...

...Just as long as they're not sample-trigger happy like they ultimately became towards the end of their run, and that was totally Prince's call, of course.

The problem with Purple Rain, 1999 and those ones is that they're the only ones played on the radio over and over ... how can you expect new fans to appreciate newer stuff to do so when that's all that's being played ??? again, on the morning show on tv this morning, they were taking about those sames ones 1999, when doves cry. ok ok stop complaining

They are having a contest (for those who live in the Montreal region, on Salut Bonjour) where we can win a loge for 15 people (I think) with food drink and all, but these loges are high in the stadium ... I guess seats in the reds are better seats ...

Anyhow, only 3 days to go excited

And she's singing "take me on the road, we can tour the ether" It's not subtle. They're together.

P was staying on the 19th floor haha with Andy I'm sure Yummmaaaay, he played guitar while she played fiddle wink oh thats badd

This is maybe a stupid question haha but did it seem like they were a couple or just friends. We know he parades around with girls all the time but I'm wondering if something more is going on...just wanted to know what it looked like from your perspective. He has been singing a lot more about sex/sensuality lately and it seems like he's smitten wink

It's obvious they are "together" but one of the reasons I don't take the line in Extralovable as a sign they're together romantically is bcuz they haven't been subtle. On the We Can Funk remake she sings "I'm scared cause pretty girls like you make boys like me turn to fools...". She's singing what Prince tells her to sing.

I'd like to see them get some of that since they were the bad that held shit down Prince's darkest hour, regarding his recording career...

...Just as long as they're not sample-trigger happy like they ultimately became towards the end of their run, and that was totally Prince's call, of course.

that's what i'm saying! i would rather see the NPG of the years u mentioned rather than the revolution cause they were funky as all hell! and michael b can't be messed with on the drums, and only sheila and john can be talked about as prince's best drummers. sonny t on the bass is a MONSTER!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Anyhow, only 3 days to go excited

ur right that is all they play on the radio. and it's hard 2 say who really is at fault for that umm but that's for another thread

Good God, can you ALL stop bitching?! Please?! If you don't like his setlists, don't go to the show. If ticket prices are too high, don't buy them. If the latest album doesn't thrill you, don't listen. Just STOP BITCHING!

Makes sense. I guess what I'm saying is that since I enjoyed the shows, I'm not ready (yet) to complain about Prince being a nostalgia act. I can see myself getting tired of the hits show, though.

GIVE HIM A BREAK!!!!!

can u name just one aftershow where prince played nothing but obscure stuff from his catalog with no covers as well?

Yes! club shows(which I consider an after show because only hardcores knew about it and attended them) at his defunct Glam Slam LA club was focused on The Come & Gold albums at the time that only hardcores(500,000) was supporting at the time, before they were even released. He catered specifically to that and played a lot of unreleased songs before they were released including "Interactive","Papa",Dark. & "endorphine machine".

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

okay ..anything in the recent years was a show like that and even at those shows u mentioned there were covers played including the santana medley, the jam. so i'm asking in the recent years from 2004 to present has there been a complete aftershow where us hardcore fans could just hear prince's material and not one hit song?

For the time being I don’t mind to hear/see him performing his hits. However I wonder why he didn’t use this “Hits Tour” to perform more few songs which are not so famous in comparison like Black Sweat, Guitar, Get ya Groove on etc. This would teach the audience that there are some other good stuff, even if not actual. And they are funky as well as the “Hits”. I don’t mind also that he is doing some covers. Most of them turns the crowd on (like play that funky music, Cool , even Don’t stop ‘til u get enough) and this is what it’s all about. It is always a question of quantity and imo the dose on the 4 shows I attended this year is fine. I enjoyed (as far as I could – had kind of hooligans on my section) that he played more the guitar (and the Bass, would like to see him playing drums as well) than the night before and in Zurich. Nevertheless he announced the Welcome 2 …… Tour as a hit tour and that no show will be the same. He did what he said.

I am not the least bit opposed to him doing hits based tours. I think it is great that after his wilderness years of the late '90s/early'00s that he is now able to tour on such a large scale. I just think that he could mix it up and do the odd tour in smaller venues for the diehards. As long as people knew ahead of time what kind of show they were going to get I don't see why he can't alternate big, hits tours with smaller tours that feature more obscure songs. It might even be better for his bottom line in the long run if he did fewer hits based tours. Eventually the casual fan will likely tire of him but if he does fewer tours aimed at them his appeal may last longer.

Ultimately I do not believe that he needs to make all of his money doing hits based tours. There is always going to be a sizeable base of hardcore fans that will see him no matter what.

It doesn't matter the main focus was the unreleased material. Back then I remember people complaining that Prince wasn't playing his hits enough. Now there saying he is playing them too much. I feel sorry 4 him. He can't seem to please his fans anymore. No wonder he has abandoned them & caters to the entertainers & casual fans that appreciate him more. Who cares if he wants to play his hits or mix them together with obscure tunes or covers. He is still able to play. So appreciate it or just don't go at all.
