Agreed But I wouldn't be surprised if they did cancel based on low ticket sales
what about the weather??
i mean he DOES have a NY show on the 7th of this month...2 days AFTER this "concert" in dallas tx...and from the looks of it it looks like it's gonna be a snowy weekend for most of the country... [Edited 2/1/11 16:09pm] Love God. Love Music. Love Life. |

Dallas had an ice storm this morning so airports cancelled all flights today and schools were closed. We may get some more snow on Friday. I would think the bigger problem would be him leaving where ever he currently is to arrive here on Thursday. If it's NY I think that means more snow between now and then which could mean cancelled flights outta NYC. Weather will be fine in Dallas on Sunday tho or so they say. |

I would be surprise if the concert was cancelled, I saw Prince in Las Vegas at the Rio Hotel on New Years Eve and had a great time with a small audience. How about all the small Venues He plays. What's with all the negativity on Prince.org? Besides I'm sure that Prince will do a tour this summer... |

It seems Badu has her own charity event scheduled for the same night at the same time. It's at the Grey Goose lounge in Dallas.

What does any of that have to do with what I'm saying? Didn't he cancel a show in NYC last month due to low sales? And selling tix for $125 a piece at the Rio for his OWN show is not the same as $1500 a pop for a fundraiser he's being HIRED to perform at. The charity has to have the balance of his money by the end of the gig and common sense would tell you that a not for profit organization would rely on advance ticket sales to have the remainder of his hefty fee. Therefore, it's conceivable they would opt to cancel IF they don't sell enough tix in advance.
That's not negativity it's reality based on how these types of events work, rumblings that the show's selling poorly, and again dealing with Prince which is not always a dependable situation as MOST of his fans who've spent time around these parts already know.
Any uncertainty or misgivings I may have about this show or any future show is due to Prince's incosistency and haphazardness with scheduling shows since the O2. And I say that as someone who's travelled all over the country and the world to see him live. He's worth it, and I WILL do it again. But it doesn't mean I'd bet money on any of his shows going off without a hitch. Buying tix to a Prince show is unfortunately fraught with anxiety these days. That's just his MO at this point and he's gonna have to do a lot to change people's minds. [Edited 2/1/11 21:18pm] |

I guess You are right, I know ANY concert is risky, I had tickets to see Michael Jackson at the O2 and was fortunate to get my money back, I took my mother/family to London since I had already purchased Hotel and airfare. Still, I'm forty, No gray hair and I don't worry about sh*t I can't control. Anxiety is a killer and Xanax is not my filler. |

Depends on their contracts with the hotel and the performers. If they are obligated to pay the hotel, Erykah, and Prince whether they hold the concert or not, then they might lose more money by canceling than they would by just holding the concert, unless they are planning to stiff everyone who paid for tickets. Knowing Prince, as you've said, he will probably get paid either way. And they better refund my money if they cancel the concert.
In any case, this story suggests that they are in fact selling a lot of tickets, at least for the more expensive seats:
http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2011/jan/31/prince-super-bowl-february-4-dallas-1-million/
Well, ummmm, no one associated with the event would ever admit it's not selling. Their whole point in talking to the media is to drum up the impression that it's sold out and in demand. Besides, I got from that article that there's a lot of uncertainty about who's doing what. Not a good sign.
Also, if they don't have the money from ticket sales they won't have it to pay him unless George Michael goes into his own pocket which I don't see him doing. Sure Prince could sue them and all but it still doesn't guarantee he'll get anything. I think this is really Kenny's thing otherwise they coulda just hired George to do a show at no cost to his own foundation. That just didn't make sense to me. Why hire Prince for $1 million+ when you could get George at no cost.
Hey, I hope everything goes off as planned and that he does a stellar show and the foundation makes lotsa money. BUT, I've been around Princey pie and his shenanigans long enough to know ain't nothing promised until he hits the stage.
PLease enlighten me if I'm incorrect, but to my knowledge and personal experience with all fundraiser/charity events in general, isn't the talent "donating" their time to the cause? I'm pretty sure Prince isn't doing this here- he's actually being paid for this charity event ? |

Yes, he's getting paid. Which is common for performers of his caliber when doing charity events. I think it's pretty rare for superstars to donate a performance due to the expenses involved in putting on a show. Obviously, any fees a charity has to pay a performer drastically reduces how much money they generate for their cause which kinda defeats the purpose.
That's why I expressed confusion about why they would hire Prince for $1 mil+ when George Michael could actually donate his own time plus expenses for a performance benefitting his own charity in a city he lives in part-time. Which is why I questioned George's actual level of involvement in this charity although I've seen him at other gallery events over the years. This just doesn't seem like good business/fundraising sense to me. But oh well what's new. [Edited 2/2/11 4:22am] |

No Scndls, he did not cancel any NYC shows. It was one of the IZOD shows in New Jersey, not New York City, that was cancelled. The 12/14 show I believe was cancelled at the IZOD, and switched over to MSG for 1/18/11 instead, and the 1/18/11 at MSG show was sold out. |

That's good. For once NY has warmer weather than Texas this winter. Well, flying INTO Dallas may be the problem if this ice situation continues because 9000 of incoming flights were cancelled yesterday and today. Hopefully that won't impact him. [Edited 2/2/11 7:20am] |

Come on people. They ain't gonna cancel shit, unless it's because of weather.
These events are always packed. Yeah it's a charity event, but there will be tons of high roller comps, and if they really needed to sell tickets they might lower the price. |

I heard that this morning about Dallas airport. NYC is having a very strange winter because our winters are not normally like this, at least not for the past couple of years, other than last year where we had an early start of cold weather, but not really much snow. These snowstorms this year have basically been back-to-back. Haven't seen anything like this for awhile. These are the types of winters like back in the late 60s early 70s. Anyway, I did hear about the flight cancellations in Dallas, maybe the weather there will let up by tomorrow, and those who are hoping to get there for the Superbowl, get to make it out there. if not, who knows what will happen.
This type of weather makes me want to stay in the Caribbean throughout the winter months. [Edited 2/2/11 7:21am] |

I don't like the cold at ALL. That's not a vacation for me. This -3 wind chill BS in Dallas today is killing me and the Superbowl. I have never liked cold weather either. Sounds like Dallas is getting an asskicking. I love Spring, Summer and Fall, but Winter is just not my favorite season. I can't wait until it's out-of-here. I'd rather get back to the regular NYC winters, where every now and then we get a few days in the high 40s that feel like 52, which is not bad during the winter season. This latest crap of weather we've been getting in NYC since late December has to go! [Edited 2/2/11 8:51am] |

Never realized that Texas gets that kind of weather. Just thinking of 72 degrees with the sun shining sounds wonderful, compared to the icy/slippery/sleety, 30 degree weather we are having in NYC today.. Well, guess we'll have to see what happens in Dallas by Fri/Sat with all the people trying to get to the Superbowl and dealing with this crazy weather. |

Oh, yeah. Winters in the Dallas area are usually pretty mild. Most days are 50s with a freeze here and there every few weeks. But we can depend on getting 70s days. Further south, like Austin, is even warmer. It would typically snow once a year, if that, and only 2-3 inches which usually melts by the afternoons.
But last winter we had record snowfall and this year was shaping up to be really mild up til now. Heck Friday and Saturday was like 76. This shit SUCKS! |

I expect most of the people there will be out-of-towners here from the Super Bowl who have only a casual interest in Prince but can afford the expensive tickets. But he does have plenty of fans here and not all of us can take the time to fly to New York or Europe for his next show. I haven't gotten to see him live since the Lovesexy Tour and I was a teenager at the time.
Most folks who are coming for the Superbowl could care less about a Prince concert. There will be many other high profile events with celebs that would appeal to the Superbowl type crowd and at a bargain price compared to this. This event was definitely not well-planned with regards to the potential audience. Like it or not, Prince is only relevant to us, Prince fans, during a Superbowl. This shit has fiasco written all over it, at least for the foundation. Prince gon' get his money regardless.

You may be right, but as long as they don't cancel the concert, I'll be happy. We can have a nice private event for the three or four Prince fans who show up.
Agreed But I wouldn't be surprised if they did cancel based on low ticket sales
How do you know there has been "low ticket sales"??? |

If you go to the princedallas.com website, it looks like there are still plenty of tickets for VIP seats that haven't been sold. I wonder if Prince has already gotten some of his money in advance. I'm also curious as to exactly when he's planning to come to Dallas, if he isn't already here. Does anyone know the answer (or can hazard an informed guess) to those questions? Seems like it would be easier for him to back out if (1) he hasn't been paid yet and (2) he hasn't yet arrived in Dallas. The weather here has been freezing for a while, but there hasn't been any new precipitation; however, they are forecasting possible snow for tonight. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach. |

I talked to the event organizer this morning who told me he had talked to Prince's manager today. She was supposed to be coming into town today and Prince is scheduled to come in tomorrow and stay through Sunday. There is the possibility that the event could be cancelled or perhaps moved to Saturday if all of Prince's very particular and required equipment doesn't arrive on time. If it is cancelled, refunds would be automatic charged back to your credit card if you purchased online. They are scrambling as hard as they can to make this all come together by tomorrow night. I've got a VIP table seat and I'm praying that all of the trucks make it into town or they move it to Saturday to give them some more time. |
