Well...you could always jump in your car and go looking for him...
Imagine the stories the guys in charge of the event must have been trying to come up with, to tell Prince they didn't have his money. They were probably embarassed to tell him they didn't have all that was agreed upon. What if it went down like this:
Event Guy #1: "Okay, when Godfather Prince pulls up in his limo, remain calm, and whatever you do...do not look into his eyes!"
Event Guy #2: "Okay, Boss, I'll try."
Godfather Prince pulls up in his stretch limo. The window slowly rolls down, Godfather Prince gestures with his right index finger for the Event Guys to approach his limo, and the Event Guys proceed towards the vehicle:
Event Guy #1 and #2: "Hello Mr. Prince" (Event Guys extend their hands towards Godfather Prince for a handshake, but Godfather Prince just gives them....the look. The Event guys start to shudder.
Godfather Prince: "You got my money?"
Event Guys #1 and #2: "Uh... Mr. P, there seems to have been a problem with the money we agreed to pay you..." (Godfather Prince interrupts)
Godfather Prince: "What? What?? Naaahhhh...that's not how it's going down. I don't play that, because we had an agreement. .So what's it gonna be?
Event Guys #1 and 2 stand in silence and shock, careful not to look Godfather Prince in the eyes ...::crickets chirping::
Godfather Prince: "Oh, so it's like that huh?? If you don't have my money, right here, right now, then this is how it's gonna be...forget you!!!"
Godfather Prince to the Limo Driver: "Pookie, let's go!" Pookie pulls off with Godfather Prince in the limo........Sccccreeeeecccch

Right now he might have half of Dallas doing just that, after what happened tonight, which of course was not his fault. It was more than likely a business deal gone bad.

If thats the case, Does many artists push it to the edge like that? In other words, He has a concert Monday 2/7 in NYC, knowing this unpredictable Texas weather he could get iced/snowed in Sunday and be late or have to cancel his NYC show. Seems risky for the winter time, instead of staying his tail in NYC. |

I was in Dallas Tues and Wed. The weather killed the Super Bowl Week mood. The organizers may not have been able to get the hotel facilities up to standards quick enough. Who knows? I do know that after the party that was Super Bowl Week in Miami last year, 2011 was a downer. Let's hope for a good game at least. Steelers by 6 1/2 since Run & Them were saying "Here we go" | |

I wonder if the money was only one reason why Prince wouldn't play. If the place was relatively empty, the media would have noticed. There was a DMN reporter in the audience. Even before the concert was cancelled, some jokers in the DMN comments were already calling him a "has-been" who couldn't pull in a decent crowd anymore. This was a lose-lose situation for him, I guess. Unfortunately, it fits into a general media narrative about how the Dallas Super Bowl has been a disaster. He couldn't be too much of a "Has Been" if he's earned millions of dollars from the Concert Series he's had at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the last 2 months and even has another Concert February 7....hhhmmm... thats a pretty good "Has Been"!!! lol |

I couldn't agree more. I'm guessing 99% of the DFW population has no idea that those New York concerts are happening. It would help if he did a full-scale U.S. tour, or at least released a new album here. If it was about money, I don't think it was about "greed". The man has band members to pay travel/food/hotel expenses/fees to pay to ship equpment, etc. Business is buiness, even for a musician. If it was about low tiicket sales, then the organizers for the event had enough time to cancel it, as well as keeping abreast about the threat of bad weather. When they decided to move the concert inside the hotel, that should have been one of the hints, that there may be a posiiblility of rescheduling it for another day or a cancellation.
People will just have to wait until the details of what happened comes out which caused the cancellation. Right now, it's just a bunch of rumors and hearsay surfacing. I know I'm making light of the situation, but it's all in fun, and I'm not making fun of those that took the time to travel there, including Prince and his band, and the customers who paid, and the volunteers as well, who were all hoping this event would happen.
The event organizers should have made the decision to cancel or postpone the event, until a later date, with the threat of bad weather and low ticket sales, possibly being contributers for the reason(s) to cancel. [Edited 2/4/11 22:26pm] | |

I am telling u he is and was in town.....just head west from Dallas . I knew all along he was going to cancel. He was very upset at sells , it wasn't his fault . How is this not Prince's fault?
His recent music is mainly crap.
He does no or little promotion...apart from us sad folk on here, most people don' know or don't really care about Prince concerts.
He is so unreliable and cancels so easily that many people don't want to take the risk.
Ticket prices too high in this day and age.

Sorry for the people who planned to go or spent money but since I am going to the NYC show maybe he and the band will be more energized and psyched to play....
STill..charity or not....He didn't agree to be free, some of the proceeds were to be free and if he was not getting paid, like anyone, no one works for free. As someone said there is logistical nightmares, fees, hotels, payroll, they are ALREADY OUT if indeed they are in Dallas.
For sure expensive for the average person; maybe that is why. Perhaps if it was in NYC OR LA or somewhere it would have been filled up.

Come on, man. U are really tripping. Your opinion of Prince's music doesn't factor into this equation. As others have stated, the organizers confused many of the potential attentees by canceling the event many times, then saying it was back on. There is plenty of blame to pass around for this and Prince is not to be blamed. He is just an entertainer that didn't get paid for a gig. That's it. That's not a stupid question at all. I used to think the same thing.
I volunteer for an organization that books 20 of the biggest names on country and rock each year. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit, and our excess funds are given away as four-year college scholarships (we're over $250 million given away so far). There is no "profit" whatsoever; in fact, we have over 20,000 volunteers that give their time and talents to this. So we're as far away from a typical concert promoter as you can get.
I asked the president one time if the entertainers gave us a break because of that. He kind of laughed and said, "You would think so, but it's actually just the opposite. However, it isn't the entertainers, it's the management companies. There are only a few that handle the vast majority of acts, and they all know we have to book 20 acts over 20 days, and that our calendar is inflexible. So they try to hold us over a barrel as long as they can, so they can get the highest price for their client".
I don't hold that against the entertainer, or the management company. The company is just doing their job. And trust me - fame is fleeting. We've booked many, many acts that were on fire one year, and then weren't heard of since. So I can understand their mindset being, "I'd better get all I can today, because I might not be popular tomorrow".
Some entertainers have given back to us. Although no one that I know has played for free, people like Hank Williams, Jr., and Jon Bon Jovi have donated back part of their fees to the scholarship fund.
As for Prince, I think SCDLS is right. This concert was NOT thrown by a charity - the charity was supposed to be a beneficiary. For all we know, Prince said, "Look - if you pay me, there's no way you can give a dime to the charity. Heck, you can't pay me hardly at all. So here's the deal. I will cancel, and you will write a check of $XXX to the charity out of your pocket, and you will refund the ticket prices to the customers. This is the cheapest way out of this fiasco for you, and I make sure the charity gets something out of the deal. I'll get bad publicity, and I'm out what it cost to get my band and equipment here, but I can deal with that." | |

DALLAS - The charitable organization that was bringing recording artist Prince to Dallas for a charity event Friday night canceled the concert, said it was back on and has once again canceled the event at its new location at the Hotel Intercontinental in Addison. At 1:21 p.m. Friday, the Goss-Michael Foundation released the following statement: "We are extremely disappointed that the Event featuring Prince, scheduled for Friday, February 4, at the Intercontinental Hotel, has been cancelled. It is our understanding that the River Alexander Group, the event organizer was unable to fund and produce the evening. The organizer came to the Goss-Michael Foundation, invited us to be the beneficiary and receive some of the proceeds which would have gone to our high school scholarship program." Less than an hour later, the foundation "rescinded" that announcement, saying that "circumstances had changed," adding this terse statement: "Prince has arrived in Dallas and will perform this evening." Organizers said while Prince's band showed up, the singer was an actual no-show. However, sources said that Prince did show up, but never got out of his vehicle before leaving the hotel all-together in the early evening. Many people found out about the cancelation as they drove up to the hotel, and others found out after already waiting 45 minutes at the hotel. "There was this guy that came down and said, 'We hate to inform that there will be no show; The band is here, but Prince unfortunately couldn't make it,'" said Debra Moorehead, who showed up at the hotel to attend the event. Moorehead said she was also told they would get their money back. The Prince event was billed as "an all-inclusive soiree" with music, art, food spirits and more. Erykah Badu was also scheduled to perform. Ticket prices started at $1,500, and were still available online at 2 p.m. Friday.

Now, one positive that might come from this is the apparent fact that Prince was not enough of a draw to sell, what? A couple thousand tickets? Maybe 1,500? Certainly not many.
He could not sell basically a handful of tickets to an event held on the one weekend of the year when the most well-heeled and publicity-conscious people in all the country were gathered in one place. Talk about a target-rich environment! But whatever the reason, Prince could not sell $1,500 tickets in sufficient quantities in the easiest market of the entire year.
So maybe the price of poker just went DOWN.
I kind of yearn for another "One Night Alone" tour in smaller venues. Some may call that a step down, but I would call it heaven. | |
