Gov. proclaims April 21, 2014 as Bruno Mars Day

Published 4:36 PM HST Apr 21, 2014

HONOLULU —Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a proclamation Monday honoring Hawaii-born pop star Bruno Mars.

Abercrombie proclaimed April 21, 2014 as Bruno Mars Day. Click here to read the proclamation.

Mars debuted as a performer in Waikiki at the age of 4 as an Elvis impersonator.

After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 2002, he left for Los Angeles where he began his career writing songs for other artists.

Mars' 2010 hit "Nothin' On You" with B.o.B was his breakout song as a pop performer.

His first solo single "Just the Way You Are" was released in 2010, which transformed the local boy into a Grammy Award winner.

Mars was the halftime show at Super Bowl XLVIII. He also won another Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for "Unorthodox Jukebox."

Mars' final show of three concerts at the Neal Blaisdell Arena is set for Monday night.

Best moments @ the Bruno Mars concert

Nonstop Honolulu’s Amanda Stevens and Tyson Joines both were among the lucky thousand who snagged tickets to Bruno Mars’ Friday concert at Blaisdell Center

Posted April 21, 2014 by Amanda Stevens and Tyson Joines

Nonstop Honolulu’s Amanda Stevens and Tyson Joines both were among the lucky thousand who snagged tickets to Bruno Mars’ Friday concert at Blaisdell Center. Both loved the show; here are their top moments:

Tyson Joines

1. Musicianship: I realize listing “musicianship” as a stand-out moment seems extremely vague, but it needs to be addressed. His musicianship as a male performer is unmatched in the current market. I can’t think of another artist out there right now male or female, who writes their own music; can play the drums, guitar, and piano; dance nonstop for two hours; AND hit every one of his notes. Yes, there’s Justin Timberlake; yes, there’s Pharrell, but neither have the personality, musical ability or stage presence that Bruno does.

2. Disco fever: If you’re able to attend a show during Bruno’s Moonshine Jungle Tour, you can expect to dance under an enormous disco ball for two hours. The first thing my eyes were drawn to when I walked into the Blaisdell Arena was a giant silver disco ball suspended from the rafters. It doesn’t get utilized until about an hour into his show, but when it starts spinning and the spotlight hits it, the predominantly dark arena turned into a bumping dance floor. Not to mention at the end of the concert it drops gold confetti on the crowd beneath it for a solid minute, while he kills his hit song, “Locked Out Of Heaven.”

3. Hit after hit: Whichever Bruno you’re in the mood for, whether it be sensitive, “When I Was Your Man” ballad Bruno, or upbeat “Treasure” doo-wop Bruno, he has something in his repertoire for everyone. His string of hits goes on and on, and he definitely didn’t disappoint with his set list.

4. Ho howzit Aunty?! Bruno knew exactly where he was this weekend, and he took every opportunity to milk his home state crowd. He used Pidgin every chance he had when addressing the audience, and even went as far as changing the lyrics to his song, “Billionaire.” The lyrics normally read, “I wanna be on the cover of Forbes Magazine,” but Bruno cheekily changed it to, “I wanna be on the cover of Midweek Magazine,” to thunderous cheers from the crowd.

5. Hana hou! The audience definitely let him know we weren’t ready to let him leave when he finished performing. Bruno took his bows, threw out a shaka and left the stage, but the audience wanted more. I knew he had to have at least one hana hou up his sleeve, because he hadn’t performed some of his biggest hits yet, but for him to come back a second and a third time on top of that, really pumped up the crowd.

Amanda Stevens

Following the fervor of this year’s Super Bowl halftime performance, it’s no surprise that local boy Bruno Mars’ Moonshine Jungle concert would sell out in Honolulu, but boy did it sell out quickly. I was fortunate to get tickets, slightly above face value, but I must say the Bruno Mars concert was definitely worth it. Let me break it down:

1. Bruno’s talented ohana: The Love Notes featuring Bruno’s dad, Peter Hernandez, opened the concert and energized the stage with Latin beats; also at the end of the night Bruno’s brother/drummer, Eric Hernandez, was introduced to the audience. The crowd had tons of aloha for both.

2. Bruno backstage: Our seats in section G risers were close to the stage and so close to backstage that I could hear Bruno and his band the Hooligans cheering before they ran on stage. That was cool.

3. Crooning tips: Bruno gave the guys in the audience tips on how to croon the ladies and added his local flavor. He said, “…guys, if she’s from Waianae, say ‘Howzit Auntie.’” The crowd went nuts.

4. Favorites: It’s hard for me to say which were my favorite songs — they were all strong — but “Just the Way You Are” was super engaging, and the crowd really got into it and sang along with him through the whole song.

5. Hot and sexy: Bruno and the Hooligans brought on their “sexy.” The temperature seriously got turned up when Mars and the Hooligans covered Ginuwine’s “Pony.” There was a lot of bump-and-grind hip action on stage, and again, the crowd really got into it. Hmmm, wasn’t that the same song that Channing Tatum “danced” to in Magic Mike? Just sayin’.

IMG_20140418_212803

6. Fedoras!
Bruno continues to influence fashion. Let’s just say I wasn’t the only one in the crowd wearing a fedora, and I loved it!

7. Hana hou! No one moved after the “final song,” knowing, with all of that crazy energy from Mars and his band, there had to be more. It was a constant roar and “hana hou!” They did not disappoint; they came back on for a few more songs and let the pyrotechnics ignite – an epic ending to a great concert.

Catching up with Bruno Mars

APR. 22, 2014 | 0 COMMENTS

Bruno Mars. (Courtesy The Creed Company)

BY JOHN BERGER / jberger@staradvertiser.com

With three sold-out Blaisdell Arena shows in the books and their history-making ticket sales now the stuff of legend — all three concerts sold-out in less than two hours — Bruno Mars finally has time to take a deep breath, enjoy his time at home and speak with the local media before heading back out on the next leg of his 14-month Moonshine Jungle Tour next month.

“We saved Hawaii for last,” Mars said Monday afternoon in an unanticipated telephone interview before the final performance of his three-show homestand. The Hawaii dates followed a seven-week swing through Australia, New Zealand and nine countries in Asia. It penciled out as 23 shows in 45 days, followed by a five-day break before Friday’s concert.

“I’ve been so many places in Asia and Australia, places I can’t even spell,” he said, sounding like the same soft-spoken guy we talked with 2010. “It’s great to be back in Hawaii. I want everyone on Oahu to know how proud I am to come from here.

“I haven’t done any press since the Super Bowl (in February), but this is Hawaii.”

In response to a question that would have been asked if he’d had time to talk before the three Blaisdell Arena concerts, Mars acknowledged things have changed since he performed here in support of his multi-platinum debut, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans,” in December 2010.

When asked if there is a place he can go without being recognized and drawing a crowd, he fell silent.

“I like to talk with people,” Mars finally said after a moment of silent thought, adding that these days he has to be careful. When a crowd forms and people get excited, there’s always a chance people will start pushing and shoving.

“I don’t want anybody to get hurt,” he said.

The break in the tour schedule means time with family for Mars and his older brother, Eric Hernandez, a member of The Hooligans from day one and his partner in the years of struggle that preceded Mars’ “overnight success” in 2010. Bruno and Eric’s father, Pete “Dr. Doo Wop” Hernandez, and their uncle, Lawrence Bayot, opened the Blaisdell engagement as members of the Love Notes, but the superstar remarked that he had “more than 220 family here.”

That means there’s a lot of catching up to do. Looking forward to those precious days between Hawaii and the next leg of the tour, Mars said he’d like to write a song for his next album, title yet to be decided.

What does he miss about Hawaii?

“Zippy’s,” he replied instantaneously. “If they ever come to Los Angeles, I want to be there.”

As for that lyric switch he made to “Billionaire” on Friday about wanting to be the cover of MidWeek, “I was just freestyling. I wasn’t thinking about it at the time, but I was on the cover of MidWeek. I think I was four.”

That would have been around 1990, when he was known nationally as The World’s Youngest Elvis. He said those video clips from 25 years ago “haunt” him sometimes, but he’s learned to live with it.

“There I am, two feet tall, with the hair and the glittery gold suit, but that’s where I was back then,” he said. “I grew up listening to Elvis and Jackie Wilson and James Brown and Michael Jackson.”

Any advice for aspiring entertainers, would-be hit-makers and pop stars?

“Be prepared to work hard at whatever it is you want to do.”

Was playing the National Football League’s Super Bowl halftime show for a television audience of more than 115 million people a break-through performance, in terms of reaching people who weren’t aware of the range of his talents as a singer, dancer and musician?

“It ain’t my job to think about that kind of stuff,” said Mars. “I just gotta go out there and give it my all.”

Any truth to those stories that you’re planning to get married?

“No!”

If he could change something about the music business, Mars said he’d make people leave their recording devices at home before coming out to enjoy the show.

“In the old days, if you went into a show with a video camera to record it, you’d be lucky to leave with your camera,” he said. “Now everybody brings their smart phones and records everything. I’d like people to come to the shows and enjoy them like they did in the old days. I don’t want people to come and then say, ‘I saw it all last night on YouTube.’

“Would I rather perform for a thousand people with cell phones or two people without? Of course I’ll take the thousand, but I wish that they’d come and enjoy the show while its happening. The show is what it’s about. It’s what I love doing, the live thing, the performance, with the audience.”

New updates on the bomb threat at last night's concert

Bomb threat delays Bruno Mars' final Honolulu concert

Posted: Apr 22, 2014 8:28 PM EDTUpdated: Apr 22, 2014 9:39 PM EDT

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

New details have emerged about the abrupt halt to the beginning of the final Bruno Mars concert at the Blaisdell Arena Monday night.

Law enforcement officials responded to a bomb threat called into the show and the performance was stopped after the first song while the threat was investigated. Mars resumed playing after a 15-minute delay.

The arena was not evacuated during the threat.

Officials say at the time of the bomb threat there was also a fight involving 10 people. The fight was not related to the bomb threat and all 10 people were escorted from the area.

Bruno's three Honolulu concerts sold out in record time. All three shows were sold out in a matter of two hours. It was later announced that people from the mainland and Canada snagged 42 percent of the 17,000 tickets, forcing many Hawaii residents to buy tickets from websites like StubHub or other online scalpers.

The ticket turmoil even prompted one Honolulu lawmaker to introduce a resolution urging concert venues to require only in-person ticket sales for the first 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Hawaii News Now has learned that when Mars next comes to town, he most likely will be playing at Aloha Stadium to accommodate all his fans who could not get into the Blaisdell.

The Roosevelt grad tweeted on Tuesday, "Aloha Hawaii. Thank you for 3 amazing shows. I can't wait to come back home. Miss you already."

Bomb threat that stopped Bruno Mars concert was a false alarm

The investigation into a bomb threat during Bruno Mars’ final concert at the Blaisdell Arena is over.

The Grammy-Award-winning singer abruptly left the stage after his first song at approximately 9:15 p.m. Monday. The show resumed a few minutes later.

Honolulu police received the call at around 8:50 p.m.

According to the Dept. of Public Safety, deputy sheriffs were on special-duty assignment outside the arena. They were notified of the bomb threat and checked the area, but it was a false alarm.

No arrests were made.

The arena hired contract security to work inside the arena. Workers responded to an altercation involving 10 people and escorted them from the arena.

Officials say the altercation was not related to the bomb threat.

Trumpeter for Bruno Mars visits Anniston schools

James King’s trumpet put Anniston High School band students into the backs of their seats, where they stayed, wide-eyed, and listened as he played.

King played George Gershwin’s bittersweet “Summertime” for band students at Anniston High School on Tuesday morning, later visiting Anniston Middle School. The professional musician wrapped up a worldwide tour last week playing with Grammy award-winning musician Bruno Mars.

King, 29, came to the school on request of former college classmate Seyram Selase, an Anniston councilman and director of the Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention. The local nonprofit provides substance abuse prevention and life skills programs in local schools.

“He’s all about preventing kids from leading destructive lifestyles and reaching their goals,” Selase said, speaking after King’s talk.

King told the kids that before joining Bruno Mars he went through all sorts of difficulties, for a time delivering pizza to pay the bills, but he followed his dreams and it paid off, he said.

King eventually toured with Maroon Five by way of close friend and band member PJ Morton, then he toured with Angie Stone until that ended and he found himself out of work.

Out of the blue, he got a call asking if he’d like to go on the road with Bruno Mars, and for the last three years he’s seen the world with the band, playing at the Super Bowl, the MTV Music Awards and the Billboard Awards.

Surround yourself with positive people, and speak about positive things and good will come of it, King told the students.

“Everything, down to the person you call your best friend, is important to who you’re going to be,” King told the kids.

“Doubt has killed more dreams than fear ever will,” King told the students. “Everybody makes mistakes, has failures and rough patches. It’s about how you overcome it.”

King, who grew up in Connecticut, told the students that his former school’s band program has been cut.

King and a few of his band members have discussed starting a foundation in each of their hometowns that would address funding cuts to extra-curricular activities, King said after his talk with students.

“Even sports programs are being cut,” he said. “We have a job. We have to come back and try to save these programs, because they saved us.”

King heads back out for another three months on the road with Bruno Mars at the end of May.

Watch Bruno Mars’ Sisters The LYLAS Dance In Their Undies In An Asylum

Time for some family bondage bonding!

by emilee lindner 05/13/14

There’s nothing like dancing around, wishing for a dude, in an asylum with your sisters. At least, that’s what the LYLAS think in their new video for “Voices.”

“Voices,” written by their brother Bruno Mars and Philip Lawrence, tells of the story of the ladies getting a little paranoid, hearing voices that say “he’ll come back this time.”

The video continues that out-of-control vibe with Jaime, Tahiti, Presley an... Hernandez writhing on concrete walls and resisting the leather straps that bind them to beds and chairs — in nothing but white undies.

A male model security guard hungrily watches them on monitors before he pursues them. Soon, the Hernandez’ are covered in guy. He climbs on top of them, bites their lips, caresses their chests — you know, family stuff.

Anyway, the song is available on iTunes and seems promising after theirreality TV show run. Will we be seeing more of the LYLAS soon? We sure hope so.

Bruno Mars just kicked off the 4th leg of his Moonshine Jungle Tour and last night he played in Oakland, CA. For those of you who havent seen or been to one of his shows---when he performs the song "If I Knew" midway through the song he will pick a random chick out the audience to run his pick up lines on. Its a "contest" between him and his band to see which guy has the best game/pick up lines. Well last night the chick he picked to run his lines on--either she wasnt feeling it or too shy to have the spotlight on her so she declined...but Bruno wasnt having that! Check the video below (@ 2:15-3:50)

Wow. Lol @ Bruno saying "Didnt you see us at the Super Bowl?" lol I think she crazy for turning him down but oh well, to each his/her own. At lease Bruno found another girl to run his lines on and she cooperated so everything went smoothly after that lol.

i was at this concert, he seemed a little annoyed i think because the show started a little late too. (maybe some sort of tech issue? not sure) and the crowd was on the quiet side, he told them at one point "oakland if you get quiet, we get quiet too" and stopped the music a a few seconds to get the crowd going. the concert for me and my family though was wonderful, we danced, sang, screamed. had a blast! but the crowd felt a little off for some weird reason, and i think he felt that.

be kind, be a friend, not a bully.

i saw those tweets, heart i think people are making a much bigger deal out of it than it really was. the concert was a great show, and he and his band did a wonderful job as always.

From Nikki Yanofsky:

Got to see one of the best shows of my entire life tonight. @quincydjones I love you, thank you for taking me. And @brunomars , you blew everyone away. What a show. Congratz on everything, I can't wait to see you perform again and to learn as much as I possibly can!!! You are an inspiration, I hope to work with you one day... Oh and I hope you like my album!

^Thanks for posting JoeBala! Looks like last night's concert was a blast!

@Uniden, yeah some folks are making a big deal out of it and blowing it out of proportion. I'll admit it wasnt the best response to give but it wasnt the worst and I think it was just his way of trying to incorporate that incident into the act in a funny way and keep it moving since things kind of got derailed when she didnt want to be a part of the act. :dunno:

Lol @ alphastreet lol
