Bruno Mars makes his first appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone in our next issue. The Hawaiian-born star talks to senior writer Brian Hiatt about his 25-year history as an entertainer, which started when he began impersonating Elvis Presley in the family band at age two. Before he was even in kindergarten, Mars was leading the group in their hugely successful show in Hawaii, but when the band broke up Bruno's family struggled to pay the bills, and life as he knew it fell apart. "I wouldn't trade it for anything," he says. "Because I feel like I can enjoy this so much."

Look for the issue on stands and in the iTunes App Store this Friday, April 26th

I'm starting to think I should take Bruno more seriously. "Locked Out Of Heaven" is brilliant, and "When I Was Your Man" is quite decent.

I concede he has an aptness for churning out pop hits, and he's a valid multi-instrumentalist, but there's something inexplicably derivative about the results.

Agreed. He is a good looking guy but it's 2013! Smoking is no longer sexy, cool or "badass". I wish it would stop being portrayed as such in entertainment media.

There's a lyric in the title track of his latest album that refers to his cocaine use, and we all remember he was busted 3 years ago in Vegas for possession. Just be glad he's not doing lines on the cover.

I'm glad he got straight quick. I remember reading about it going "oh no..." but he cleaned up REAL FAST after that. That's what impressed me about Bruno.

yeah, it's the old cliche about people becoming musicians just to get girls. When I hear his music I think it's just not meant for me to enjoy.

I really liked "Locked Out Of Heaven" the first time I heard it, but there was a long wait for the album, and in the meantime the radio (and cafes, and stores) played it into the ground. Even this magazine cover seems late.

No mentions of New Edition in the article--but everybody else gets discussed a bit. Besides the listening to "Purple Rain" before going on stage (on the page that appeared before), a rehearsal turns into a jam session and Mars plays keyboard and sings "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and then he says he borrowed from it for the hook for "Nothin' on You." His working the band to get all their choreography right while playing sounds a bit like the reports of Prince working the Time (though Mars eventually decides to drop the dance steps--from interviews it just sounds like Prince would have just piled on something extra to play on top of the dancing). And early in the interview, when he and the reporter get in the car, he turns on a "retro-R&B station" and Janet comes on singing "Nasty," leading Bruno to "sing along with the synth riff" and then he says "Jimmy Jam, right?"

So maybe, just maybe, Bruno's listening habits are similar to yours. Not that that means anything about his music. Just thought it was interesting.
