Review of the show in North Carolina (Aug. 21)

Live review: Bruno Mars, Time Warner Cable Arena (8/21/2013)

Posted by Kimberly Lawson on Thu, Aug 22, 2013 at 4:41 PM

Bruno Mars
Time Warner Cable Arena
Aug. 21, 2013

"Girl, you so sweet, I'd lick the bottom of your feet."

That was one of the bad pickup lines a Bruno Mars band member offered up to a female fan last night in the audience at Time Warner Cable Arena. The crowd - filled with teenage girls, fanatic young women and moms looking for a night to sing their hearts out without fear of judgment - swooned.

Hitmaker Bruno Mars stopped in Charlotte last night on his Moonshine Jungle Tour, and as far as I'm concerned, the singer-songwriter known to jump genres is working to revive the lost art of sexy-but-classy R&B.

Dressed in a leopard print shirt and the straw hat worn by the old guy in Jurassic Park, Mars demonstrated that he's a new-school charmer channeling an old-school pimp. Is it his captivating smile? His rapport with his fans? The way he's perfected the two-step?

I don't know, but the girl sitting in the row in front of me nearly knocked me over from dramatically falling out in a daze as soon as the first chord struck for "Moonshine" (her boyfriend caught her, in case you were wondering). Mars' vocals are on point, yes - a concern since a couple of days ago he tweeted out a photo of cold medicine - but was it that serious? Had she been closer, I'm sure said fan would have thrown her panties on stage (or maybe not - again, her boyfriend was there).

Eh, who am I kidding? I've interrupted writing this review at least three times so far to sing along to various YouTube videos of Mars' songs.

About halfway through the show, the band, many of whom doubled as backup singers, dancers and hypemen, retreated into the shadows. It was the first time Mars truly stepped into the spotlight alone - surrounded by red lighting to set the mood, of course - and he took that opportunity to sample R&B hits from Aaliyah, Ginuwine and R. Kelly. Sexy songs, might I add.

Sure, many of Mars' songs are pop-y and playful (think, "Marry Me," "Billionaire" and "The Lazy Song," the last of which he did not perform), but the meat of his setlist on this tour is about love, lost love and love again. Classic R&B material.

In his introduction for "When I Was Your Man," he said it was "one of the hardest songs" to write, and "still is one of the hardest" to perform. Again, the girl in front of me practically fell out.

Review of last night's show in Atlanta, GA (Aug. 22)

Concert review: Bruno Mars dazzles at Philips Arena

By Melissa Ruggieri

As the curtain embroidered with gold palm trees collapsed, Bruno Mars stood front and center, surrounded in the shadows by his band.

A diminutive figure in a leopard print shirt, vest and trademark jaunty hat, Mars inched across the stage floor with feline grace as his band pumped out the heartbeat of “Moonshine.”

At his nearly sold-out Philips Arena show on Thursday – was it only two years ago that he played the Fox with Janelle Monae? – Mars and his ace seven-piece band proved why he’s the hottest thing in pop right now.

As slick and professional as he is, there is an old soul nestled inside Mars. He’ll give you a show with the occasional blast of pyro, a stage-length HD video screen and a giant mirror ball, but it’s apparent his bigger goal is to provide a straight-outta-“Soul Train” musical revue.

Right now, at age 27, he’s a tremendous talent with seemingly limitless potential.

He can move (his call-and-response homage to James Brown during “Runaway Baby” confirmed that). His silken voice can effortlessly shift from shimmery smooth on “Treasure” to appropriately gritty on a cover of Motown classic “Money (That’s What I Want).” He can play (he donned a guitar for “Money” and “Billionaire,” the song he co-wrote with Travie McCoy). And let’s not forget his coolly likeable personality and smile of a superstar.

“Put your camera phones down and do some dancin’,” Mars implored early in the show (amen to that), as he and his crew engaged in some remarkably un-cheesy synchronized moves.

Mars’ band (the Hooligans) is a “band” in the truest sense. They groove together and move together like a well-coiffed “West Side Story” gang in snazzy shoes and newsboy caps.

Though the enjoyable – and genuinely amusing – “R&B breakdown” routine that Mars and his band engaged in with a member of the audience ran a bit long, it allowed the audience to get a sense of the personalities of Mars’ musical comrades.

And how mature of Mars to surround himself with fellow music-minded men onstage instead of a bevy of scantily clad female dancers, as most of his peers would. Mars is confident enough to rely on his own sexuality, which he demonstrated during the seductive bedroom crooner “Our First Time” and crotch-thrusting covers of “Pony” and “Ignition.”

But one of the reasons he’s attracted not only a legion of female admirers, but a surprisingly young fan base as well, is because of swoony songs such as “Marry You” and the sweet “Nothin’ On You,” which, sadly, did not feature a surprise appearance from Atlanta’s B.o.B., but did offer an uncomfortable bit of bass overload.

Despite the sleek open-backed stage – all shiny floors and metallic risers – and the precision required for the taut starts and stops in Mars’ routines, everything about the concert felt real and organic.

“Grenade,” propelled by a galloping beat, was stocked with razzle-dazzle lighting but “Just the Way You Are” – still Mars’ most melodious song – produced the requisite sing-along, which, you could tell from Mars’ smile, was perfectly fulfilling.

Openers Fitz & The Tantrums proved themselves worthy of an arena setting as the six-piece California outfit thoroughly charmed during their set.

They’re a quirky cool band – kind of a criss-cross among Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Adele and the Style Council – and infectious songs such as “Break the Walls” and “Money Grabber” piqued the crowd’s interest enough to stand and clap along.

The interplay between singers Michael Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs is the centerpiece of their live show, but multi-instrumentalist James King, who rotated among sax, flute, keyboards and guitar, made his musical presence felt on a pleasantly edgy cover of The Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” and the furiously escalating glam-jam “L.O.V.”

Songs such as “Fools Gold” and “Spark,” with its giddy handclaps and sprightly keyboards, kept the mood light, but there is nothing lightweight about these musicians.

The effervescent pop of radio hit “Out of My League” perfectly exemplified how Fitz & The Tantrums, not unlike Mars, can catch a young listener’s ear with a catchy melody, but layer it with enough sophistication that adults will be equally enchanted.

I heard that rumor too, but then somebody said that Katy Perry would close the show?

Whatever they decide.. I just want the audience to focus on Bruno's show... AND Like hell they will because they know he's the highlight of it... and him sitting in the front row and getting this hype has "winning awards" all over it... not video of the year but maybe best pop video or best male video.

Reviews of tonight's VMA performance cool

Bruno Mars' VMA Performance Of 'Gorilla' Filled With Flames, Horn Section And Bold Vocals

The Huffington Post | By Matthew Jacobs Posted: 08/25/2013 11:11 pm EDT | Updated: 08/25/2013 11:43 pm EDT

Bruno Mars took the stage to perform his new single "Gorilla" on Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. The singer rolled through the track while wearing a leopard-print button-down as beams of neon-green lights filled the Barclays Center.

Mars was accompanied by a horn section, and the jazzy new song marked one of the night's tamer moments, even as blasts of fire erupted during the chorus. Amid an evening filled with sensual performances, Mars offered a brand of artistry unmatched by the bulk of the telecast.

The singer performed immediately following his win for Best Male Video.

"Gorilla" is the fourth single from Mars' popular 2012 album "Unorthodox Jukebox."The first, "Locked Out Of Heaven," racked up three high-profile VMA nominations: Video of the Year, Best Male Video and Best Pop Video. Mars received another nod for his most recent single, "Treasure," in the Best Choreography category.

The new song, which will be released officially on Monday, was the first written for "Jukebox," the singer told Contact Music last December. The track about wild lovemaking also inspired the gorilla on the album's cover.

Mars garnered nominations in the same four categories at the 2011 VMAs, for "Grenade" and "The Lazy Song." He went home empty-handed but performed Amy Winehouse's "Valerie" during a tribute to the late singer.

The 27-year-old Hawaii native joined an A-list slate of performers during Sunday's telecast, including Robin Thicke, Kanye West, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

Bruno Mars Goes Ape Sh*t With Sexy 'Gorilla' Performance At VMAs

After winning his first-ever Moonman for Best Male Video, Bruno took the stage for a sultry performance.

Bruno Mars brought some of his own sexual healing to Brooklyn's Barclays Center when he took the stage during the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (August 25), moments after winning his first-ever Moonman for Best Male Video for "Locked Out Of Heaven."

Selena Gomez welcomed him to the stage, telling the room he "brings the house down every time he performs."

The VMA-nominated singer performed his latest single, the super-sexified"Gorilla," for the first time in front of the A-listers that filled up the Brooklyn venue. Taking the stage in a leopard top and his signature hat, Mars slowed it down with his R&B jam, and, well, brought some sexy back using his signature showman style.

As Mars belted out the tune, light and lasers filled the Barclays. Mars was joined by a full band, and a gorilla... on the screen behind him. The lights erupted with the chorus and given the song's NSFW content, Mars even threw in a few air humps.

Mars' performance left Will Smith bopping his head as smoke and fire filled the auditorium.

While he performed that Unorthodox Jukebox single during the VMAs, he was nominated four times for two other singles of his 2012 album release, "Locked Out Of Heaven" (Video of the Year, Best Male Video and Best Pop Video) and "Treasure" (Best Chorography). "Gorilla" is the fourth single off Jukebox, which dropped last December.

The singer spoke to MTV News during Saturday night's rehearsals, about his return to the VMA stage and promised that his performance would "capture the essence of the song." He added, "What can they expect from this performance? Two words: bang, bang. And twerking."

Calling the night a "big" one, he noted, "There's gonna be a lot of big acts here. I'm just happy ... me and my band ... you know we took some time off the road to come out here, so it's gonna be fun."

Mars was one of the many superstars who played Barclays during the VMAs this year. Lady Gaga opened the show, setting the tone for all the stellar other performers, including Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Kanye West and Miley Cyrus, among others.

Earlier in the night, he seemed pretty stoked to have won a Moonman. "Thank you so much this is my first Moonman y'all," he told the room when he accepted his Best Male trophy. "All the fans who voted, I love y'all. Thank you guys so much, Thank you MTV, Thank you!"

VMAs 2013: Bruno Mars' 'Gorilla' - King Kong ain't got nothin' on you

bruno-mars-VMAs-gorilla.jpg

Fresh off a Best Male Video win for "Locked Out of Heaven," Bruno Marstook to the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 stage to perform his new single, "Gorilla." There was smoke, lasers and a giant gorilla that kept popping onto the screen behind him.

We'll confess -- it's not our favorite Mars' song. It's lacking the catchiness of his normal offerings. But hew as definitely giving 100 percent in the performance. Love to see someone actually sing live and rock it out.

The video will be below when we have it. "Gorilla" is the fourth single off Mars' 2012 album "Unorthodox Jukebox." He is currently on his "Moonshine Jungle" world tour to promote said album. After wrapping in the U.S. on Sept. 1, he'll be heading for Europe for October and November and then on to Australia in March 2014.

LOL Rachel stans hard for Bruno Mars at the MTV Buzzworthy blog! lol

Bruno Mars looks great backstage at the VMA rehearsals.

Bruno Mars looks WAY TOO GOOD to have just rehearsed anything. Is that a wax figure?

We've likely already made it pretty clear how excited we are for Bruno Mars' upcoming 2013 MTV VMA performance. Maybe we'll leave out the part about how we scanned our credentials at Barclays while Bruno was rehearsing his VMA performance, and the scanner made this loud whooping sound, and the security guy was like NOPE! Turns out they had a read on us ahead of time, muttered something about a restraining order in the making, BLAH BLAH BLAH DETAILS AND SECURITY! WHO NEEDS EITHER, REALLY? Also, who cares, let's keep this Bruno lovefest going! We could do this all night! We ARE going to do this all night! CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP!

ANYHOOLIGANS, let's study this almost-too-hot backstage photo of Bruno post-VMA rehearsal. Like, let's REALLY get in there. Yeah, we know that he's technically a real human and stuff (ehhh, is he though?), but Bruno is WAY TOO GOOD LOOKING to have just finished rehearsing. If it were us, we'd be sweating buckets, collecting said sweat in said buckets, showering to wash ourselves clean of that horrible image, and wishing to God that we looked as good as Bruno does at all times. *Runs to the Sephora across the street* *Buys concealer* *Returns concealer because I am beautiful no matter what they say*

C'monnnnn, it's just not fair! We're starting to perspire just LOOKING at Bruno, who's leaning all casually, like, "Yeah, I just wrapped up my VMA rehearsal. I do this every day. NBD, BB. Also, you and me making love like Gorillas." BANG! PREGNANCY! SORRY, TOTALLY LOST IN A SEX DRAGON FANTASY. TALK AMONGST YOURSELF, HOOLIGANS! PETER GENE HERNANDEZ, MESSIAH OR NOT? DISCUSS!

Bruno Mars – 2013 MTV VMA Performance | Video Stream

The incredibly talented, Bruno Mars, took his talents to the stages of the Brooklyn Barclay’s Center as part of the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. The singer/songwriter didn’t disappoint as he took to the stage and performed his track “Gorilla” from his latest album, Unorthodox Jukebox.

Bruno flawlessly ran through the track while bringing plenty of theatrics and lighting effects that gave the performance a dope, addictive quality. He definitely didn’t disappoint as he ran through his track, backed up by his talented live band. This man definitely knows how to entertain, check out the clip after the jump and speak on it down below.

2013 VMAs: Bruno Mars Shows Off His Animal Side in “Gorilla” Performance

Bruno Mars isn’t a guy who likes to mince words. And the performance of his new single, “Gorilla,” at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards lets it all hang out.

The song talks about Bruno’s animalistic desire to “make love like gorillas.” Bruno might be a little man, but his voice packs a gorilla-sized punch and he uses his raw talents to create a larger-than-life image of himself.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to see Bruno in action, you’re in for a treat. But be warned, Bruno is on the prowl and he’s not likely to let you go once he’s got you pinned down.

From Billboard:

There’s something to be said about simplicity when whatever’s simply being done is awesome. Bruno Mars never moved more than three steps in any direction during his performance of new single “Gorilla.” But boy, did he sing! His voice soared and his passion was palpable as he performed the bedroom jam. Sure, it’d be tough to find many people who watched the VMAs for Bruno specifically. Names like Timberlake and Gaga eclipse is celebrity. But when his time came, Mars left his mark.

VMAs 2013: Bruno Mars Performs “Gorilla” – Video

You can always count on Bruno Mars to deliver an impeccable live performance and he certainly didn’t disappoint last night, as he took to the stage at the 2013 edition of the MTV Video Music Awards.

He performed “Gorilla” and, as the video below will confirm, it was one of the highlights of the evening. Then again, if you think about it, when doesn’t Bruno perform and bring down the house?

However, Bruno didn’t go home just with the satisfaction of having done such an amazing job with his performance: he also won a couple of awards.

He picked up the Best Choreography Award for “Treasure” and, perhaps more importantly, won Best Male Video for “Locked Out of Heaven.”

Plus, did you see his fierce (and new, I guess) hip move?

From Entertainment Weekly

Bruno Mars

The most elegantly designed and executed performance of the evening belonged to Bruno Mars, who performed ''Gorilla'' standing behind a mic stand high up on a simple platform, with a giant gorilla face behind him, lasers shooting through the room, and his crack band booting the whole thing along. But although there was a unified feel, with Mars staying put and the color scheme a consistent glowing green, there was plenty of drama — three parts human, with Mars belting with tremendous feeling and kicking over his mic stand, and one part fire, with the night's biggest pyrotechnics shooting off at the climax.

Grade: A-
