Bruno Mars Teases 'Gorill...uis Guzman

Bruno Mars is prepping “Gorilla” as the next single from his wildly successful Unorthodox Jukebox set, and in anticipation of the video’s premiere on Monday, October 14 Tuesday, Oct. 15 (via Facebook, because that’s what all the cool kids are doing these days — big ups, Zuckerberg), he’s offering up a few teasers of the clip on Instagram (because that’s also what all the cool kids are doing these days).

So what should we expect from the clip? Well, there’s some neon lights (always a good side), and a rather sinister-looking iguana (a very good sign), and the actor Luis Guzman, also looking sinister. It all bodes well, doesn’t it?

Why The NFL and Pepsi Booked – But Didn't Pay – Bruno Mars For Super Bowl XLVIII (From the Magazine)

By Andrew Hampp, New York | October 14, 2013 2:20 PM EDT

The following excerpt is from Billboard magazine's special Sports & Music Package which examines how music can play a larger role in the nearly $14 billion brands will this year spend on sports. This special section includes "The Big Scores," a story on music's role in this summer's World Cup; NBC's plan to use music extensively in its Winter Olympic Games coverage; and a special Billboard Sports & Music Roundtable with CAA's Tom Worcester, Columbia Records Agency's Brian Nolan, ESPN's Kevin Wilson, NFL's Sarah Moll, Coca-Cola's Joe Belliotti and GMR Marketing's Casey Gartland. You can pick-up this issue here. Subscribe to Billboard here.

Sarah Moll saw Bruno Mars three times this summer on his Moonshine Jungle tour. But it was halfway through the second show at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center that she knew she wanted to book him for the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show, the most-watched U.S. television event of the year.

“We knew we wanted to go a little younger and fresher, and Bruno really stuck out as we went to meet with him a few times,” says Moll, the NFL’s director of entertainment television and programming. “And every time I saw him, even though it was the same things, it was a different show and I walked away with a different perspective. We wanted to come off with the coolest 12 minutes in music, and he definitely is gonna do that. Just from having a conversation with the guy, his personality is so engaging. He may be a smaller guy, but he packs a big punch.”

As part of the NFL's policy, the league doesn't pay Super Bowl halftime performers, but instead foots the bill for travel and production costs. Of course, there are some exceptions -- this year's performer Beyonce had just renewed her decade-long endorsement deal with Halftime sponsor Pepsi to the tune of $50 million across several years and global media spend. Still, the Mars news marked the earliest announcement for a Super Bowl Halftime performance (revealed Sept. 8), and another milestone for the continued combination of sports, music and marketing.

Of course, not everyone shared Moll’s immediate enthusiasm for the Bruno booking. Some criticized Mars for his lack of connection to New Jersey, where Super Bowl XLVIII will take place, while others felt his track record was less proven than veteran acts who’ve graced the Halftime stage in the recent past like Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, The Who and The Rolling Stones. Of the latter point, Pepsi’s VP of consumer engagement Adam Harter says Mars is “an extremely talented Grammy award-winning artist, with global appeal, and resonates with a very broad and diverse audience of music and sports fans.”

Plus, Moll teases -- “Bruno’s been making some phone calls to some friends. We probably will announce another act before the performance. I don’t think it’s gonna be like anything we’ve done before. He’s so unique, and definitely the 20-degree weather will make it unique, but he’s excited. It will all be part of Bruno’s show.”

The Halftime slot, with an audience that reached a record 112.5 million viewers in 2012, has become a powerful sales tool. Whether it’s Beyonce announcing her Mrs. Carter World Tour on the back of her 2013 appearance, Madonna releasing lead "MDNA" single “Give Me All Your Luvin’” the week before her performance or Bruce Springsteen slotting his "Working On A Dream" album around his 2009 gig, few headlienrs have missed a chance to promote new product.

Tracy Perlman, the NFL’s vice president of entertainment marketing and promotions, points to U2’s powerful 2002 post-9/11 performance, which prompted a major sales spike of 2000’s "All That You Can’t Leave Behind." “They did a program across all 32 NFL cities with Clear Channel and flew 64 people to be on the field for their performance. They literally used that booking to promote an album that was two years old, and sold 200,000 copies the next day,” she says.

Atlantic Records' Camille Hackney, exec VP of Atlantic Records' brand partnerships, says plans are already in the works for a similar leverage point for Bruno Mars next year, but declined to specify just what. “We’d be remiss if we let that opportunity go,” she says coyly.

Sennheiser Delivers Flawless Wireless Performance on Bruno Mars ‘Moonshine Jungle Tour’

Bruno and his band rely on Sennheiser microphones and wireless systems

New York City, October 10, 2013: Superstar Bruno Mars finished the North American leg of his Moonshine Jungle Tour in September a run that consisted of over 40 U.S. and Canadian dates, a spectacular appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards, and an announcement that he will perform at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show on February 2, 2014. This month, the Moonshine Jungle Tour continues on to Europe before setting out to Australia and New Zealand in early 2014.

Bruno and his band rely on Sennheiser microphones and wireless systems.

At the VMAs, which were broadcast from New York City’s Barclays Center and reached more than 10.1 million viewers, fans were treated to a thrilling rendition of Mars’ new single, “Gorilla”. Dressed in a leopard skin shirt on a stage awash in green lasers and gorilla imagery flashing on a massive LED screen, Mars delivered a memorable, soulful vocal performance through a Sennheiser SKM 5200-II wireless transmitter and MD 5235 capsule. During the VMAs, which also featured performances by Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and others, Mars picked up two Moonman awards: Best Male Video for his #1 hit single “Locked Out of Heaven”, and another for “Best Choreography” for his latest single, “Treasure”.

The VMAs were the icing on the cake for Bruno Mars’ production team, who has endeavored to continually raise the audio quality and production standards of the touring operation for the past several years. Sennheiser’s global relations team has played a direct role in helping them achieve this goal by providing superb wireless and microphone technology. “When I took on the Bruno Mars gig over 2-1/2 years ago, he and the background singers were using a competitor’s model. I just knew there was a better microphone and capsule combination for him,” recalls James Berry, monitor engineer for Bruno Mars. “I began transitioning the background singers first, then worked with the front-of-house guy to get Bruno to try a Sennheiser microphone. Now you couldn’t pry that microphone out of his hands if you tried!” he says.

For wireless audio at the VMAs, as well as with the rest of the tour, the Bruno Mars production team has relied on Sennheiser. At the VMAs, one particular challenge was the massive LED walls at the rear of the stage. “We had to shoot the wireless signal right through the LED walls,” Berry recalls. “We did a lot of pre-planning on antenna placement when we got there.

It was all rock solid and performed flawlessly.” The monitor crew used Sennheiser’s WSM software to save set-up time: “We used WSM to preload all the frequencies we were sent, so when we arrived, we just booted up the system and were ready to go in about ten minutes. In the past, we would have had to go to every individual unit and program all this information in.” Berry also used the software to monitor each wireless element in real time: “I rely on WSM to see my battery and RF levels, as well as all the inputs and outputs,” he says.

Honing In on Bruno Mars’ Microphone and Wireless Touring Rig

Derek Brener, who has been Bruno Mars’ front-of-house engineer for 3-1/2 years, recalls a point where Bruno’s audio infrastructure took a huge step forward: “One of the main turning points was when James came in and said he would not use anything else but the Sennheiser wireless that’s when everything changed. James is such a heavy hitter having worked with Beyoncé, Weezer and lots of other great bands, I trusted his opinion.”

After trying various Sennheiser capsule and transmitter combinations for some time, Berry and Brener eventually settled on an SKM 5200 handheld transmitter with an MD 5235 capsule. “For me, the MD 5235 capsule punches through the PA system better than any other microphone we’ve used on Bruno Mars,” says Brener. “Bruno is very involved with Derek and me on the way things sound and has very clear ideas on what he wants and what he expects,” Berry adds. “Now, it is a comfort thing. Whether we are playing arenas, stadiums or awards shows, there is no debating he wants Sennheiser, and that’s what he’s going to get.”

For vocals and horns, the band’s wireless consists of ten channels of Sennheiser EM 3732-II receivers, seven SKM 5200-II transmitters with MD 5235 capsules and three SK 5212-II bodypack transmitters. Berry says that one of the primary reasons they chose the EM 3732-IIs was because of the AES3 digital output with external word clock synchronization: “We are clocking our wireless devices at 96kHz to get the best sound quality we can. We didn’t consider anything other than this unit because we knew it would give us the best sound quality and reliability on the RF side.”

“For me, clocking at 96kHz opens everything up so it sounds more full,” Berry continues. “You have the entire frequency expanse in there, and what you put in is what you get out. Therefore you can hear the Sennheiser MD 5235 microphone capsules we are using with even greater fidelity.”

The band also relies on Sennheiser for its wireless monitor systems, of which Berry has sixteen channels of SR 2050 IEM. This covers the entire band, as well as off-stage technical staff. “I’ve used a lot of in-ear systems, and the reason I chose Sennheiser is because of sound quality,” says Berry. “The wireless IEMs deliver a wide stereo image so I can put things right into place where they need to go in my mix. For me, there is no other option than the 2k series because of that.”

All in all, over the course of the entire North American tour including the VMAs, the Sennheiser equipment has performed flawlessly, reports Brener: “We have never, ever experienced a drop out as long as we have had the Sennheiser wireless. It is all rock-solid. I have major confidence in Sennheiser.”

The Sennheiser Group, with its headquarters in Wedemark near Hanover, Germany, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems. In 2012 the family company, which was founded in 1945, achieved a turnover of around 584 million euros. Sennheiser employs more than 2,300 people worldwide, and has manufacturing plants in Germany, Ireland and the USA.

The company is represented worldwide by subsidiaries in France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Germany, Denmark (Nordic), Russia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Japan, China, Australia and New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and the USA, as well as by long-term trading partners in many other countries. Also part of the Sennheiser Group are Georg Neumann GmbH, Berlin (studio microphones and monitor loudspeakers), and the joint venture Sennheiser Communications A/S (headsets for PCs, offices and call centres).

Unleash Bruno’s most sexual and scandalous video yet.

http://www.rap-up.com/201...s-gorilla/

BRUNO MARS' 'GORILLA' MUSIC VIDEO MUST'VE HAD AN INSANE BABY OIL BUDGET

So, here's a foolproof plan for your next venture in the world of music video-making: just add baby oil. That's the takeaway from Bruno Mars' latest video-venture, "Gorilla," a tune that speaks to the art of making sexy times like you're a giant hairy beast who lives in the wild. You know, an animal that doesn't have sex for the fun, frisky, enjoyable thing that it is, but rather out of necessity. But hey — it's art, right? And art means never having to apologize for being shiny.

But, I mean, it is funny when you consider that there's no way a gorilla would look that sweat-kissed during sex because they're some of the hairiest motherfuckers on the planet. That baby oil would be all absorb, absorb, absorb. Ain't no way that moisture's not gonna do it's job, you know?

Which isn't to say that it's all bad: the song itself is undeniably sexy in that retro way Bruno Mars seems to have on lock, to say nothing of the fact that its video has created the foundation for many a wet dream for boys the world over. That's what happens when you put Freida Pinto on a stripper pole. But still, is it really all that original to brandish the "sexy" moniker when your idea of sexy is just pouring a bunch of baby oil all over everything ever?

Every single person in this entire video is glistening. Every single set piece. A guitar's lit on fire (by "tequila" also known as probably more baby oil, we're guessing). There's winding and grinding — and all of it shining! Forget the CGI budget for that creepy-ass Brunogorilla at the end, we want to know what that baby oil budget was. C'mon Bruno: tell us. Was it $500? $5,000? A BILLION?!

It can't possibly be cheap to keep Luis Guzman lubed up like that, or whatever stripper was pretending to be Freida Pinto for most of the actual pole work. (Those moves couldn't possibly be the work of an amateur, could they? Or is this something that's learned in step one of strip aerobic classes and I'm just grossly underestimating the power of the human body?) Or Bruno Mars, who keeps on rubbing himself up against things and people because ~sexual emotions~ and probably needed re-application several times throughout the shoot.

But I mean, I suppose it all makes sense when you take a look at just how sexy and romantical gorilla mating times are: it's all pump, pump, pass. What girl wouldn't swoon over such a proposition? Just add oil, my friends. From there on out it's all silky-smooth.

There's a king kong metaphor in here somewhere.

Bruno Mars' 'Gorilla' Video: Freida Pinto Strips & Slithers in Steamy Clip

By Jason Lipshutz, New York | October 15, 2013 4:00 PM EDT

Bruno Mars' 'Gorilla' Video: Freida Pinto Strips & Slithers in Steamy Clip

Bruno Mars has been deemed family-friendly enough to headline the upcoming Super Bowl halftime extravaganza, but the pop crooner sports a more R-rated side in the music video for "Gorilla."

The clip, which premiered exclusively on Facebook on Tuesday (Oct. 15), finds Mars and his band performing the epic "Unorthodox Jukebox" cut in a seedy bar as "Slumdog Millionaire" star Freida Pinto attacks a stripper pole with her entire sexual being. Sure, the Luis Guzman cameo is pretty memorable, but not as memorable as the back-to-back shots of Pinto (playing the impossibly alluring Isabella) peppering Mars' guitar with tequila and a lit match, and then ravenously sucking face with the singer in the backseat of a steamy car.

Chart Highlights: Bruno Mars' 'Gorilla' Swings Onto Pop Songs

"Gorilla," Mars' fourth single from "Unorthodox Jukebox," swung up 11 spots to No. 26 on last week's Hot 100 chart. The album's first two singles, "Locked Out of Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man," both topped the chart, while "Treasure" peaked at No. 5.

Mars performed "Gorilla" at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, and might just trot out the song during the Super Bowl on Feb. 2, 2014. The singer's Moonshine Jungle world tour continues on Tuesday night at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam.

I haven’t watched enough episodes of “Nature” to actually know how gorillas make love, but I doubt it involves stripper poles and getting sweaty in the back seat of a car, but that’s how Bruno Mars imagines it in the steamy new clip for “Gorilla.”

The slow groove song from "Unorthodox Jukebox" closes his concerts and it a tour de force. Here, the 2014 Super Bowl headliner takes the action to a strip club, named, appropriately enough, The Jungle, where he is in the backing band for the strippers. He and a hot, hot stripper, played by “Slumdog Millionaire” star Freida Pinto, in a performance that her parents would surely not approve of, have a thing going on. He watches her strip while other men throw money at her, and then they go get it on in the back seat of his car, Gorilla style (I just made that last part up).

It’s a sexy, if somewhat oddly so, song mainly because of the feel and pulse and the Mars-directed video (is there nothing he can’t do?) captures that feeling perfectly, even if the chatty opening set-up with two other strippers and a cameo by Luis Guzman lasts a little too long.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, NFL director of entertainment television and programming Sarah Moll told Billboard that Mars may bring some of his buddies along with him to perform at the half time show on Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in E. Rutherford, N.J. “Bruno’s been making some phone calls to some friends,” she said. “We probably will announce another act before the performance.” Given that the temperature will be around 20 degrees, chances are Pinto won’t be joining him, at least not at the character she plays in “Gorilla.”

Bruno Mars Turns Up The Heat In 'Gorilla' Video

Freida Pinto stars as a seriously sexy stripper in the latest clip from Mars'Unorthodox Jukebox.

Bruno Mars' "Gorilla" is an absolutely arena-sized sex jam, and now, it's got an appropriately epic music video.

In the new clip (which premiered Tuesday on Mars' Facebook page), Bruno pushes practically everything to the max, casting actress Freida Pinto as Isabella, a downright devilish dancer in a South of the Border strip club. She struts and prowls her way across the stage, powers her way up and down the pole, and — in one gloriously cinematic scene — sheds her close with such ferocity that it literally causes the joint to short circuit.

Luis Guzman cameos as the club's seriously sleazy owner, and Mars and his mates serve as the house band, and practically every frame of the video drips with both sweat and sex (to say nothing of the scenes where Mars and Pinto passionately paw at one another in the back seat of a Caprice) ... which, again, is probably the point. But credit Mars — who co-directed the video with frequent collaborator Cameron Duddy — for also infusing the clip with a healthy dose of camp, whether it's in the catty back-and-forth between a pair of strippers backstage, or Guzman's scenery-chewing turn. Clearly, Bruno's seen "Showgirls" a few times.

And while Pinto will no doubt garner the most attention for her, uh, work— make no mistake about it, she deserves the accolades — the "Gorilla" video also succeeds because Mars and Duddy have created a singular, hyper-sexualized world here, one that pays homage to the song's subject matter (you know, humping) while, at the same time also paying tribute to pulpy classics of the past. It feels fresh, yet, also worn in ... or, more specifically, sweated in.

Like everything Mars has done on his Unorthodox Jukebox"Locked Out of Heaven" and "Treasure," specifically) his latest clip is undoubtedly indebted to the past few decades of pop-cultural history ... yet, once again, he's managed to created something entirely new, too. Thanks to Pinto's wattage, "Gorilla" goes to heights — and depths — Mars has never visited before ... we're all riding along with him, and we can't wait to go back, even if we probably need to take a cold shower before repeated viewings.

Bruno Mars' 'Gorilla' Video Is a Stripper Soap Opera Starring Freida Pinto

PG-13 clip debuted on Hawaiian singer's Facebook page

Bruno Mars has gone Hollywood for his latest music video. The future Super Bowl Halftime prince drafted Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto and longtime character actor Luis Guzmán to star in the official clip for "Gorilla," the fourth single to emerge from Mars' stellar sophomore album, last year's Unorthodox Jukebox.

Co-directed by the pop crooner himself with the help of frequent collaborator Cameron Duddy, the cinematic visual casts Pinto as Isabella, an exotic dancer who has caught the ire of her scantily clad co-workers while earning attention from Bruno's character, the frontman of the strip joint's house band. Guzmán plays the club's manager and announcer, and when he beckons Pinto's Isabella onto the pole, sparks fly. No, seriously — sparks literally fly when she disrobes. Dollar bills also start to rain from the sky, a guitar is eventually set on fire, and, judging from the look on his face, it's clear that Mars' lothario has one thing on his mind. Cue kinda-gratuitious shots of him and Isabella making out and grinding in a steamy car.

If Mars' "Treasure" video nodded to Michael Jackson's Off the Wall with its throwback disco glitz, then the "Gorilla" short recalls the sorts of mini-movies MJ envisioned later in his career — just, you know, with more strippers. Watch the video, which premiered on Facebook (a laJay Z and Justin Timberla...oly Grail") by hitting the play button above.

Bruno Mars Goes Primal in 'Gorilla'
Watch the singer double as a strip-club singer

OCTOBER 15, 2013 5:15 PM

Bruno Mars doubles as a seedy strip-club singer in his just-released video for "Gorilla" – a track off his latest album, Unorthodox Jukeboxwhich he premiered via his Facebook page. He co-directed the clip, which stars Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) and features Luis Guzmán (Boogie Nights), with his past collaborator Cameron Duddy ("Locked Out of Heaven").

The dramatically charged clip opens with two women speaking in Spanish while applying lipstick backstage at a gentleman's club called La Jungla. It seems a new woman has been fooling around with another's man (Mr. Mars), and it ends with one of the women declaring, "Wait 'til I tell the boss who she's sleeping with." Then it's revealed that the woman, Isabella (played by Pinto), has been listening in – and it's her time to dance.

After an introduction by Guzmán, Mars kicks things into gear and Isabella begins pulling off some gravity-defying spins on the pole. As his band bangs out some mid-tempo steamy soft-rock piano stabs, Mars mugs at her intensely, singing "You and me baby making love like gorillas," as she disrobes and sparks fall from the ceiling. Then it cuts to the two of them heating up the backseat of a car, intercut with shots of her grinding on customers. There's a moment about mid-song when Mars sings, "In this jungle, you can't run," which metaphorically explains the name of the strip club in a "Hotel California," "you can never leave" sort of context, but it also serves as an invitation for her eventually to drop to her knees and lick (wait for it) his guitar. She takes it from him and lights it on fire à la Hendrix, and it's pretty much all over for everyone after that, leading to an anthropomorphic chase scene.

The song was released as a single on September 10, following Mars' performance of it at the VMAs, and it peaked at No. 26 on the Hot 100. Unorthodox Jukebox was Mars' first No. 1 album, and it is currently back in the Top 20 of the Billboard 200.

Bruno Mars - "Gorilla" (Music Video)

Following the footsteps of Jay-Z (with "Holy Grail"), Bruno Mars decided to premiere the music video for his new "Unorthodox Jukebox" single, the banging tune "Gorilla", first on Facebook rather than on YouTube on Tuesday, October 15. Co-directed by the Hawaiian crooner and his longtime collaborator Cameron Buddy, proceed with your watch above.

The 'making sex like animals'-themed song has officially become the fourth single from Bruno's platinum-selling sophomore album "Unorthodox Jukebox". Despite his three previous singles have all reached Top 5 on the Hot 100 (in fact, two of them peaked at #1), there's murmuring in the Internet (blogs, forums) that "Gorilla" may break Bruno's streak of hits this era. Many say it's not as radio-friendly as the previous singles, and that Bruno should've picked "Natalia" as his next release. Although I agree "Natalie" (and "Young Girls" at some point) needs to obtain the single 'treatment', I don't think we should give up on "Gorilla" just yet.

The song's about to crack the Top 10 on Top 40 radio.

I do think, though, Bruno shouldn't take that long to upload the "Gorilla" video on YouTube. Now that Billboard is counting YouTube views into its ranking formula, he needs these views to make "Gorilla" crack the Top 10 on the Hot 100 without unnecessary risks.
