Celebrity birthdays: 5 things you didn’t know about Bruno Mars

Celebrate the singer-songwriter’s 28th birthday with fun Bruno Mars facts!

It's Bruno Mars' 28th birthday, so what better day to delve deeper into the musician's past. From the inspiration for his name to his childhood Elvis impression, find out more about Mr Mars.

1. Bruno's out of this world name inspiration

An amazing stage name like Bruno Mars doesn't just appear out of nowhere, and the musician has quite the fun story behind how it came about.

His name is Peter Gene Hernandez, but he's been called Bruno since he was a "chunky little baby" as his dad gave him the nickname after Bruno Sammartino, a "big fat wrestler" in Bruno's words.

Bruno also explained to Rap-Up that he came up with his new surname to add some "pizzazz" and "a lot of girls say I'm out of this world, so I was like I guess I'm from Mars". Love. It.

2. Bruno has performing in his genes

Bruno's dad was a Latin percussionist and his mum a singer and hula dancer, and together with their six children they put on a Vegas-style revue in Hawaii.

The family band was called The Love Notes and they entertained the tourists night after night with their renditions of popular songs.

3. Just call him 'Little Elvis'

As Bruno's family were all performers, it's no surprise he followed suit. In fact, he followed in his uncle's footsteps as an Elvis Presley impersonator from such a young age that he was called 'Little Elvis'.

By 1992 he was such a seasoned Elvis impersonator that he got a cameo appearance in the film 'Honeymoon in Vegas' crooning away. He also does a mean Michael Jackson impersonation.

4. The way to Bruno's heart is through his stomach

Bruno's mum was Filipino, his dad Puerto Rican, and he grew up in Hawaii, so he's had a broad range of culinary influences. His favourite meals from his heritage? Chicken Adobo and Spanish Rice.

When JustJared asked Bruno if he could cook, he joked he can make pop tarts. But actually, he is a pretty good chef and says he learned a lot from his mum.

5. Bruno's sisters are hot on his heels

The singer's four sisters, Tahiti, Tiara, Presley and Jaime have now formed their own band called The Lylas (Love You Like A Sister), and have their very own docu-series following their journey.

You'd think they'd be roping in their brother to help them get big, but that's not so.

They told Access Hollywood they want to try and make it on their own, with Tiara joking that there are plenty of other musicians they want to work with before they team up with their dear old bro.

Happy Birthday, Bruno Mars!

by Hilton Hater at October 8, 2013 8:04 am.

Bruno Mars turns 28 years old today.

But the singer has already received quite the birthday gift, of course: he'll be performing at halftime of...owl XLVIII on February 2.

Those looking to purchase something for the musical superstar should take note, however. That game will be played outdoors in New Jersey. In the dead of winter. The guy may need a heavy winter coat.

A multiple-time Grammy Award winner, Mars was overshadowed at this year's VMAs by Miley Cyrus (ever heard of her?), though his rendition of "Gorilla" may actually have been the best performance of the evening.

Go ahead and send in your best birthday wishes to the artist now and then also do the same for the following famous folks, who all turn a year older on October 8:

  • Barbara Palvin (20)
  • Nick Cannon (33)
  • Matt Damon (43)
  • Chevy Chase (70)

- See more at: http://www.thehollywoodgo...M3C3c.dpuf

It's also Jesse Jackson's birthday today too.

Bruno Mars: The Hooligan from Mars

The Honolulu raised Filipino boy born by the name Peter Gene Hernandez, whom we all know today as Bruno Mars, was given this catchy nickname piece by piece. His father thought that young Peter looked like Bruno Sammartino so he decided to call him by the name ‘Bruno’. As for the Mars part, most girls say he’s “out of this world” so he simply shrugged and thought he was from Mars.

Mars first started off with his debut album entitled Doo-Woops &Hooligans. His lead single, “Just the Way You Are” was indeed a very catchy song with an even cooler music video. The song, not too surprisingly, even succeeded to top the Billboard Top 100. The music video appeared to be the characters in the video being formed out of the media found the cassette tape. It’s pretty clever since it looks like slight stop motion.

The album then released its second single, “Grenade” which was also a big hit, scoring the third spot on the Billboard 200. The song is quite dramatic and includes very expressive and emotional lyrics to go with it. Mars explains, “‘Grenade’ represents the OTHER side of love – where you’re in love with a woman and you know for a fact that she doesn’t love you the way you love HER.”

The music video itself also shows hardship. It depicts Mars trying to get to his girl dragging a piano by rope. Once he reaches his lady’s house, she catches him cheating on him. There’s the story. You know, the pain you get when you’re aware of all your efforts and all you get in return is a bunch of crap. Not the best relationship, if you ask me.

Mars has also done a few collaborations. He’s worked with Travie McCoy for “Billionaire”, B.oB. for “Nothin’ On You”, and even Bad Meets Evil and Eminem for “Lighters”.

He then wrote a song for the soundtrack of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 called “It Will Rain”. The song was yet another success for Mars. Again, Bruno explained this song and now, he advises for us to “think of the darker side of love”

The main goal for “Lighters” was to inspire people with both the song and the video. The video looked cleverly thought and planned out. Of course, extra effort was shown in some scenes as well. Some people, although, questioned why the video looked a little dark. Well, that only applies for the first few parts because the last part was fabulous. The last part just featured an illuminated “sky full of lighters”.

In 2012, Bruno released his second album, Unorthodox Jukebox. This time, you may notice that the songs in this album seem a little eighties like but that’s what gives it its original vibe. Bruno’s goal for this album was to show his happy and energetic side. The lead single of the album was “Locked Out of Heaven” which he admits actually came out of a random jam session in the studio. This song stole the thirty fourth spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

The music video features a very retro look and even Bruno with a whole new look. He’s ditched the hat and let his puffy hair out loose. Bruno appears to be a performer in the video in some old fashioned club-like location.

Soon afterwards Mars released the album’s next single, “When I Was Your Man”. This song brings back an emotional Bruno Mars we’ve all grown to know and love. The force in his voice is back when he reaches the stressed words in the chorus, and you can really hear the drama and tension in his lyrics.

A four year old named Kai once sang this song on Ellen and even caught Bruno on one of his plane flights. Kai, being the happy fan he normally is, stops and decides to take a picture with his idol. Boy, bet that made his day!

Again the music video takes on a little old fashioned look. Bruno is just playing his piano in the middle of a dark room, with a glass of what appears to be beer which is half full.

Despite all the constant changes and surprises Bruno gives, these surprises never fail to amuse us.

Bruno Mars celebrates his 28th birthday!

Bruno Mars birthday

Peter Gene Hernandez turns 28 today. You may be asking yourself, who exactly is that?

Well, his stage name is Bruno Mars.

Mars dropped the Hernandez from his name after he realized it was a crutch on his career. In an interview with GQ magazine, he explained the common phrase repeated to him by music industry executives went a little bit like this, “Your last name is Hernandez, maybe you should do the Latin music, this Spanish music…”

Many tried to sway him into singing in Spanish by reminding him “Enrique Iglesias is so hot right now,” and suggesting he quickly jump on board the trending Spanish music train. Mars didn’t take too well to those suggestions and decided the best move to avoid being stereotyped was changing his name.

That was the birth of Bruno Mars.

Bruno Mars influenced by Elvis Presley

Bruno Mars birthday

But maybe what some industry execs didn’t understand was that Bruno Mars’ background boiled down to more than just his Latino last name. He was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. His mother was a Philippine dancer and his father a Jewish Puerto Rican percussionist.

With both parents in the entertainment field, Mars or the young “Bruno,” a nickname given to him by his sister, got an early start in the performing arts.

He joined his father for the first time on stage at the age of 4. At that time, his father owned an Elvis-memorabilia store in Hawaii from which stemmed the idea of a variety show in which Mars took part impersonating The King. Needless to say, Elvis Presley was a big figure in the Hernandez home.

Although Mars doesn’t remember much of the script, he did add “I probably couldn’t speak that much. But I was f–king great at it.”

Peter. Bruno. Hernandez or Mars. There’s not a thing that we would change ’cause you’re amazing, just the way you are!

Bruno Mars, O2 Arena - music review

Birthday boy Bruno Mars was in the mood to party last night and he had an energetic backing band happy to share the considerable vocal and gyrating duties. His songs ranged from the funk-soul of Treasure to the power-pop of Marry You

Party time: Bruno Mars was backed by an energetic band (Picture: Getty Images)

Three sold-out nights at the O2, two number one albums and a Grammy award: Bruno Mars is officially the biggest thing to come out of Hawaii since Barack Obama.

The birthday boy was in the mood to party last night. "Put your damn camera phones down and dance with us," demanded the former Peter Hernandez early on.

If Michael Jackson had The Jackson 5, Mars had The Mars 8 — an energetic backing band happy to share the considerable vocal and gyrating duties.

Dressed in a suede waistcoat, gold chain and white fedora, Mars was part-cowboy, part-rapper, part Man from Del Monte.

The music was similarly eclectic, ranging from the funk-soul of Treasure to the power-pop of Marry You.

At his naffest — touching himself up while covering R Kelly’s Ignition (Remix) — Mars made the O2 feel like a giant cruise ship.

But when he stuck to his own material, he was unstoppable. When I Was Your Man showcased his multi-octave vocal range, while Nothin' on You prompted a mass sing-along (even if its romantic sentiment was somewhat undermined by the spectacle of his backing band dry-humping the floor).

Some tweaking is required but Mars could soon rule planet pop.

Mars treasures his fans after show

Bruno Mars had a birthday to remember - when his fans sang to him at his latest show.

The Treasure singer celebrated his 28th birthday by performing at London's O2 Arena during his Moonshine Jungle tour. As the show drew to a close, his bandmate Philip Lawrence told the crowd about Bruno's special day, before rousing them into singing Happy Birthday.

"Thank you London for making my birthday so magical. See you tomorrow. #MoonshineJungle," he tweeted after the gig.

"I Cant believe it... Im old sad NOW GET OFF MY LAWN YOU LITTLE JERKS!" he added.

During his 90-minute-long set, Bruno - who was born Peter Hernandez - showed he was the ultimate showman.

He showcased his Michael Jackson-style dance moves, as well as his guitar skills, as he ran through his hits from both his albums including Treasure, Grenade, Marry You, Runaway Baby and Travie McCoy's Billionaire, which he featured on and co-wrote.

Bruno also told the crowds off for not dancing enough, saying: "We've been waiting a long time to play for you. We came to make you move, make you sweat. I see iPads and s***. What do you think this is? Put them down and dance."

He admitted When I Was Your Man was "still a difficult song to sing", before finishing off with Just The Way You Are. He returned for an encore to perform Locked Out Of Heaven and Gorilla.

With support from funk singer Mayer Hawthorne, Bruno's Moonshine Jungle tour includes dates in London and Birmingham, before he returns in November for five more shows.

Bruno Mars Celebrates 28th Birthday With "Magical" London Show On 'Moonshine Jungle' Tour

The 'Treasure' singer's live show was hailed as "amazing" by fellow singer Nathan Sykes in the audience.

Bruno Mars celebrated his birthday in London last night with a huge show at the O2 Arena, while The Wanted's Nathan Sykes was in the crowd to watch the "amazing" show.

The 'Locked Out Of Heaven' singer turned 28 yesterday (8th October) as he continued his 'Moonshine Jungle' UK tour across the UK, and thanked the UK crowds for showing him a "magical time" during the concert.

"LONDON!!! Prepare to celebrate the birth of thy young Mars at the O2 Arena tonight!! The Duke has arrived!" Bruno tweeted ahead of the big show, to support his recent album 'Unorthodox Jukebox', before adding: "Thank you London for making my birthday so magical. See you tomorrow. #MoonshineJungle."

Among the audience members for Bruno's big London birthday show on Tuesday was The Wanted star Nathan Sykes, who hailed the US star for his incredible voice after watching the live show.

"Had the most amazing time at @BrunoMars show tonight," Nathan tweeted."His vocal ability is beyond incredible. I'm obsessed."

This week saw The Wanted announced their new 'Word Of Mouth' UK arena tour for 2014, with tickets going on sale from Saturday 12th October at 10am.

Looks like Bruno was filming something in London today, someone spotted him walking on the street and captured it on their phone...in the youtube video below you see there's a camera crew and a lady walking next to him, and in the pics you see he has a lapel mic on. I'm guessing it must be some kind of interview. Looking forward to seeing the footage!

Another review of last night's show at the O2 Arena:

Bruno Mars live at London's O2 Arena - Review

Published Wednesday, Oct 9 2013, 10:28am EDT | By Robert Copsey

As if embarking on a worldwide arena tour after releasing just two albums wasn't impressive enough, Bruno Mars's strike rate of hits on both records is such that his set at London's O2 Arena last night - on which he also celebrated his birthday - could have easily been confused for a greatest hits show.

For the first of his three sold-out nights at the venue, the Hawaiian singer and his seven-piece backing band The Hooligans breezed through a more-than-you'd-remember selection of global-reaching tracks that blend pop, doo-wop, funk and R&B; all to a backdrop of vintage rap pack and Jungle Book-inspired visuals.

Despite crowd interaction being kept to a minimum (except when jovially demanding to "put your damn camera phones down"), he never felt distant; gyrating along with the rest of us to 'Billionaire' and recent hit 'Treasure' while keeping the ladies hanging off his every word as he displayed his mighty vocal range on ballads 'When I Was Your Man' and 'Grenade'.

Occasionally he fell foul of giving some numbers too much breathing space - adding in unnecessarily long breakdowns and interludes, but for the most part they were saved by his energetic bandmates, who dry-humped the floor to 'Nothin' On You' and happily took on vocal duties when asked. It was a minor flaw in an otherwise stunning performance from a singer who's only just getting started.

4 Star Rating

Bruno Mars performed:

Moonshine
Natalie
Treasure
Money
Billionaire
Show Me
Our First Time
If I Knew/ It Will Rain
Runaway
Nothin' On You
When I Was Your Man
Grenade
Just The Way You Are

But every pop hook was sweetened to excite on what was Bruno’s 28th birthday.

Treasure embraced the raw funk of early Prince, while When I Was Your Man saw him lay down a studio quality vocal. The crowd, including Chris Martin and the Beckhams, were spellbound as he synched retro choreography with his eight-strong troupe The Hooligans.

A grenade exploded thanks to his own smouldering guitar work.

Bruno even found time to charm the ladies during Just The Way You Are. And Locked Out Of Heaven was the culmination of it all, as the crowd bathed in gold dust confetti.
