Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars play Target Corp’s staff meeting

bmars-news:

The rumors are true. Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars turned out to be the big acts at Target Corporation’s fall meeting.
Downtown Minneapolis was awash in red-and-khaki masses Thursday as Target headquarters employees swarmed over to the Target Center for the company’s semi-annual meeting, which has previously featured big-name concert acts.
Among the past featured guests at the annual bullseye confab: Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, James Taylor and Tony Bennett.
There was speculation about who the headliner of the company’s event would be, some rumors suggested Michael Buble would perform.
However, JT was a logical choice since Target sells an exclusive deluxe version of his latest album that includes two bonus tracks.

Timberlake, Bruno, Luke Bryan, the Band Perry play today at Target managers meeting

Posted by: Jon Bream

Today’s the day. Every fall you can measure Target’s clout in the music business by whom the retailer lands for its fall managers meeting at Target Center.

The long, long meeting is still in progress but thus far Super Bowl-bound Bruno Mars, the Band Perry and Luke Bryan have entertained.

We’re betting Justin Timberlake will be the day’s biggie. After all, his “20/20 Experience” has been a big sales experience for Target and Volume 2 of that disc is coming this fall. We’ll try to keep you updated.

UPDATE: Justin Timberlake did indeed close the event, perfomring four songs.

Girls education campaigner calls for ban on sexualised Bruno Mars song 'Gorilla'

A GIRLS education campaigner is calling for mainstream radio to ban singer-songwriter Bruno Mars' new sexually-charged single.

Mother of two Dannielle Miller was outraged when she heard the explicit song Gorilla describing a sexual encounter between a young girl and a man she calls "Daddy" while she was driving her children to school.

"As a mum of young kids I get offended when I hear lyrics where men refer to women as sluts. This is not a song that respects women," Miller said.

"Anyone who asks you to call them "daddy" in the bedroom is just 50 shades of wrong."

As an author and co-founder of Enlighten Education, which runs workshops for girls in high schools, Miller said she has one question for Mars who won a Grammy for best pop vocal performance in 2011.

"How would you feel about someone saying that to your daughter?"

Mars' soft pop songs about love have struck a chord with teenagers. Gorilla is a departure into a more explicit genre.

Miller, of West Pennant Hills, said sexualised songs that had references to violence towards women should not be played on mainstream radio like NOVA.

Commercial Radio Australia has a code of ethics but it doesn't apply to radio lyrics or the time of day songs are played, according to their website.

SONG LYRICS - RIGHT OR WRONG?

"Yeah I got a fistful of your hair

But you don't look like you're scared

you're just smiling tell me "Daddy, it's yours"

Cause you know how I like it you's a dirty little lover

If the neighbours call the cops, call the sheriff, call the SWAT, we don't stop

We keep rocking while they knocking on our door

And you're screaming, "give it to me baby"

"Give it to me ****@#cker!"

from Gorilla by Bruno Mars

BAN THAT SONG

Wake up Little Susie (1957) - THE EVERLY BROTHERS Reason: teenage hanky-panky.

Splish Splash (1958) - BOBBY DARIN Reason: nudity.

Tell Laura I Love Her (1960) - RAY PETERSON Reason: too sad.

Puff the Magic Dragon (1962) - PETER, PAUL AND MARY Reason: drug references.

My Generation (1965) - THE WHO Reason: unfair to people who stutter.

Let's Spend the Night Together (1967) - THE ROLLING STONES Reason: low morals.

The Ballad of John and Yoko (1969) - JOHN LENNON Reason: wasn't totally banned but the word Christ was 'bleeped' out of the song.

Lola (1970) - THE KINKS Reason: free advertising (promotes Coca-Cola)

God Save the Queen (1977) - THE SEX PISTOLS Reason: unfair to Her Majesty.

Smack My Bitch Up (1997) - THE PRODIGY Reason: misogynistic.

Article on Philip Lawrence posted on his Tumblr: http://allthingsphilsmeeze.tumblr.com/

PHILIP LAWRENCE COMES HOME TO PERFORM

image

Philip Lawrence has enjoyed remarkable success writing hit songs and singing and recording them with pop phenom Bruno Mars.

The Evansville native with the big glasses, flashy hats and wide grin has performed before tens of thousands of people in stadiums and before millions tuning into the Grammys and other nationally telecast events he’s appeared on, singing backup on hit songs he and Ari Levine cowrote with Mars for the pop singer’s “Doo Wops and Hooligans” and “Unorthodox Jukebox” albums.

Saturday, however, Lawrence will claim the spotlight for himself, singing his own songs in a hometown showcase in The Victory. He will stand center stage in a 7 p.m. concert featuring songs from his first solo album, “Letters I Never Sent,” as well as some of the material he cowrote for Mars’ “Doo Wops and Hooligans” and “Unorthodox Jukebox.”

The Lawrences, Shane, left, and DeVonna Lawrence, will sing gospel music as part of their brother Phil Lawrence's concert in The Victory, Saturday, Sept. 14.

The Lawrences, Shane, left, and DeVonna Lawrence, will sing gospel music as part of their brother Phil Lawrence’s concert in The Victory, Saturday, Sept. 14.

Lawrence will share his Victory show with five talented relatives.

DeVonna and Shane Lawrence, his sister and brother, will perform songs from an upcoming gospel CD with their uncle Tim Moore. And cousins Gina Moore and Joan Moore Mobley will perform as Evansville’s favorite sister act, the Browne Sisters.

His first live concert showcase for “Letters I Never Sent,” shoehorned into a break between shows in the “Unorthodox Jukebox” tour, features his most personal songwriting and fulfills a childhood dream, Lawrence said in a recent interview.

“I’ve always envisioned myself, even as a kid, coming back to Evansville and having my own personal concert,” he said. Like the album, itself, the hometown concert “is another one of those ‘bucket list’ things for me to come back and check off.”

To share the showcase with other talented members of the musically gifted family who helped nurture and encourage his own success brings a bonus. “It’s a way for me to show my appreciation and gratitude and pride for having grown up in Evansville,” Lawrence said.

For as long as he can remember, Lawrence dreamed of a career on stage. As a teenager, he and his younger brother, Shane, performed with a friend in Vision. “It was rhythm-and-blues based, with a strong emphasis on harmony,” he said. Shane wrote some songs for the group, “but mostly for our gigs around town we sang BoyzIImen songs or whatever was popular at the time,” he said.

After graduating from Memorial High School in 1992, Lawrence enrolled at Tennessee State University in Nashville, to major in communications with an emphasis in musical theater. Midway into his sophomore year, however, “I sat down with my parents and said, ‘Hey, I appreciate the money you’re spending on me for college, but you’re going to be wasting it if you keep me in this school.” As a student he’d thrown himself more into writing songs and performing with other students than to classes. “I knew really early what I wanted to do, and I was ready to jump in.”

After nine months with a theater troupe in North Carolina, he found a job at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. He started as an emcee, moved to singing in a Lion King act to and then became a lead singer in another show called Tarzan Rocks. That’s where he took up serious songwriting, working out tunes and lyrics on a piano in a rehearsal room at Disney World. He and a couple of Disney entertainment producers wound up working on songs for action film star Steven Seagal, who convinced them to quit Disney and brought them to Los Angeles and moved them into a Santa Monica penthouse in 2002.

“That’s what I thought L.A. was,” said Lawrence, “beaches and penthouses.”

That illusion vanished after six months, when Seagall’s music project fizzled and he cut them loose to fend for themselves, Lawrence said, “but I’ll be forever grateful and thankful to Steven Seagal because he got me to L.A.”

For several years, Lawrence made his living touring, singing backup for Anthony Hamilton, a soul and rhythm-and-blues artist. He returned to Los Angeles to pursue his own music, knocking on doors, hounding record label offices, “to get my music heard,” he said. “A few years in there were really difficult, but I kind of look at those as my college years,” he said. “I studied artists and producers that were doing well. I learned the tricks they would use and really took that time to hone my own craft.”

He met Bruno Mars in late 2005 and teamed with Ari Levine, forming the songwriting trio the Smeezingtons. The name came from the trio’s personal slang. “We always used to say ‘we need to write a smash. We were always convoluting words, switching them around, so ‘smash’ became “smeeze’ somehow.” The writing team adapted and adopted the name for themselves after someone mused that if they became famous, “one day we would have music moguls saying ‘Get me the Smeezingtons!,’” Lawrence said, softly chuckling. “I guess it worked.”

In addition to Bruno Mars hits on “Doo Wops and Hooligans” and “Unorthodox Jukebox”, the Smeezingtons wrote B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ On You” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” (both recorded with Bruno Mars), CeeLo Green’s international hit “Forget You” (the radio and broadcast title for a smeeze with an unprintable name). Their writing and producing credits include songs for Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa, Natasha Bedingfield, K’naan and Matisyahu.

Success has brought a prosperous, promising career and it’s brought his family from Evansville to Encino, a suburb of Los Angeles. “I got everybody out here now,” Lawrence said. “Shane and Deedee (DeVonna) live with me in my house and Mom and Dad have a condo abut two minutes from here.” His siblings, both singers, are putting together gospel album as The Lawrences.

“Letters I Never Sent,” came out this summer on Atlantic Records, but he started the project four years ago, “just as the Bruno rocket was about to take off,” he said. “I thought, ‘If I am ever going to record an album for myself, I should probably do it now.’”

Working with guitarist and producer Jean-Yves “Jeeve” Ducornet and songwriter Michael Diskint, Lawrence wrote and recorded the album during breaks from Smeezington projects and Bruno Mars records and tours. He didn’t know if the album ever would see release, “but the success of Bruno has opened a lot of doors for me,” he said.

He’s happy to continue working with and behind Mars, whom he considers his best friend. When he has the chance, however, he wants to perform his own music in the spotlight, as well.

“It’s time for people to hear my voice,” he said. “I’m ready to get on stage and start to fulfill some of the dreams I had as a kid.”

And even after more than a decade in Los Angeles, he thinks of Evansville as home. “I wouldn’t have wanted to choose anywhere else for my first concert,” Lawrence said. “I’ll be happy to see some familiar faces and some new faces, and hopefully instill some encouragement for the young ones out there in the audience that anything is possible, no matter where you’re from.”

IF YOU GO:

What: Philip Lawrence will perform songs from his own album, “Letters I Never Sent,” along with music he co-wrote and recorded with pop star Bruno Mars. The concert also will feature DeVonna and Shane Lawrence, Philip’s sister and brother, performing songs from an upcoming gospel CD with their uncle Tim Moore. And cousins Gina Moore and Joan Moore Mobley will perform as the Browne Sisters.

When: 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, declared by Mayor Lloyd Winnecke as “Philip Lawerence Day” in the City of Evansville.

Where: The Victory

Tickets: Priced at $45 an $50, available at the Ford Center, Ticketmaster locations or by calling 800-745-3000. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Mission of Grace, a ministry of Grace and Peace Lutheran Church.

Workshop: Atlantic Records will sponsor a Music Master Class taught by Philip Lawrence from 3 to 5 p.m., Sept. 15, at the Tropicana Conference Center. The event is open to all, but especially tailored for high school and college students pursuing careers in music. Registration, available at Saturday’s concert or at the door Sunday, is $10.

RAP-UP TV: PHILIP LAWRENCE TALKS SOLO DEBUT, SUCCESS, & PRANKING BRUNO MARS

From bmars-news:

As one-third of production team The Smeezingtons (which also consists of Bruno Mars and Ari Levine), Philip Lawrence has penned hits for Alicia Keys, B.o.B, CeeLo Green, and Bruno.

Earlier this summer, the Grammy-nominated hitmaker released his solo debut Letters I Never Sent via Atlantic Records. During Bruno’s “Moonshine Jungle World Tour” stop in L.A., Phil invited Rap-Up TV on his tour bus, where he reflected on his success while humoring us with his jokes.

“It’s a collection of the music I like to listen to,” said Phil of his debut, which is now available on iTunes. “I’m a huge fan of folk music. I’m a huge fan of rock music, huge fan of Seal, Billy Joel, singer-songwriter guys. I think I was channeling my inner singer-songwriter with this album.”

He and Bruno have racked up awards and traveled the world together. “It’s a rare thing that you not only get to experience this kind of success and the wonderful things that we’ve been exposed to, but to do it with your boy, to do it with someone you came up with, to do it with someone who equally believes in you, there’s a huge sense of camaraderie,” he said.

But despite their success, they remain humble. “Every day I walk on that stage, we look at each other and go, ‘We did it.’ It’s really, really cool.”

Plus, find out the hilarious prank Phil pulled on Bruno onstage, what it was like to meet his idol Babyface, and which artists are on his wish list of collaborators.

Before playing the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Bruno next year, Phil will make a triumphant return to his hometown of Evansville, Indiana on Saturday for a special concert at the Victory Theatre. Tickets are on sale now.

Hard to argue with pick to have Bruno Mars perform during Super Bowl XLVIII

Mars may not be on Michael Jackson or Paul McCartney's level, but believe it or not, he is a major international star.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2013, 6:13 PM

For more than three years, the people of New York City and New Jersey have celebrated the NFL’s decision to play Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Not only will the game be a financial boon to our area, but it will also be history-making since it will be the first Super Bowl played outdoors in a cold weather location.

As we like to do around here when we do things nobody else has done, we’ve pounded our chests and raised our hands above our heads since the announcement was made. Rightly so, we’ve also ensured all the skeptics that we are prepared for whatever mess Mother Nature could throw at us that day.

But now some New Yorkers and New Jerseyans have taken things too far, ripping the league for its choice of Bruno Mars as the halftime act for the game.

What has he done to earn such a prestigious gig, some have asked. The vast majority of others who have a problem with the pick feel it’s a bad choice because Mars has nothing to do with the Big Apple or the Garden State.

And my answer to that is this: So what?

Since when have Super Bowl halftime acts been selected according to the city or state the game is being played in?

Scan the list of halftime acts since the early ’90s, when the league started making a deliberate effort to secure big-time talent that would draw eyes to the television screen at intermission, and it’d be hard to draw any kind of direct connection between the act and the location of the game.

Paul McCartney at Super Bowl XXXIX? No, he’s not from Jacksonville, Fla. He’s not even an American.

Michael Jackson, whose Neverland Ranch was located in Southern California, performed at halftime of Super Bowl XXVII at the Rose Bowl, but not because he was a local legend. At the time, he was the biggest star in the world.

Bruno Mars may not be on Michael Jackson’s level, but believe it or not, he is a major international star. And those who don’t think he’s ready for a moment like the Super Bowl probably don’t know that he’s been preparing for it for a long time.

Mars — who is 27 — was once the youngest known Elvis Presley impersonator in the world. Check YouTube for clips of him at age 4 performing his act in a documentary. Adorable.

But what about Bon Jovi? Or Billy Joel? They’re from the area and would represent New York and New Jersey better than someone from Hawaii, as Mars is.

One problem with that? Neither of those local guys has done anything relevant, musically, in more than a decade. And, for those who think Bon Jovi would represent New Jersey well in front of the rest of the world, the guy who best represents the state's musical prowess - Bruce Springsteen - already did the Super Bowl, four years ago. In Tampa - not exactly the city that inspired him to write the song "My Hometown."

Billy Joel for the Super Bowl halftime show? That would have the exact opposite effect organizers of the event are looking for.

One of the primary objectives of the halftime show is to draw viewers who aren’t necessarily interested in the game. Your buddy who saw Billy play at a tiny club in Long Island back in ’74? He’s already watching, over there in the corner with the Bradshaw jersey on.

As the father of an 11-year-old girl, I can assure you that Bruno Mars will pull her — and millions of young people like her — into the living room at halftime. He’s also pretty big with the 35-and-over female crowd.

According to his Wikipedia page, Mars was the best-selling digital artist of 2011, due in large part to the sales of his hit “Just the Way You Are,” which has nothing to do with the similarly titled Billy Joel song from 1977.

Mars has plenty of other tunes to put together a fun and electric 13-minute set during the halftime event.

Never heard of “Locked Out of Heaven,” or “Grenade,” or how about “Billionaire,” the 2010 Travie McCoy smash that Mars sang leads on? Then the Super Bowl halftime show isn’t for you anyway.

I’m still pulling for Weird Al Yankovic to be invited up there one day because he would be the perfect bridge between the Super Bowl acts of yesteryear and those who are coming down the road, like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and, yes, even Justin Bieber.

But it’s hard to argue with this year’s pick. And contrary to a headline that appeared in this very paper the day after the announcement was made last week, you don’t have to be from Mars to believe that.

Chart Highlights: Bruno Mars' 'Gorilla' Swings Onto Pop Songs

By Gary Trust | September 16, 2013 3:45 PM EDT

Mars looks to continue his perfect top 10 streak on Pop Songs with his latest single.

While Katy Perry takes "Roar" t... Pop Songs with her friends including tigers, elephants and more (in the song's video, that is), Bruno Mars continues the format's current infaturation with jungle-themed jams, as "Gorilla" stomps in at No. 30. It's the recent MTV VMAs performer and upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner's 12th enty on the chart; the first 11 have all reached the top 10, with six soaring all the way to No. 1.

BRUNO MARS TAKES ‘TREASURE’ TO THE STREETS

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars lives the rock star life even when he’s not on stage. The smooth singer turned a simple trip to the liquor store into a production and documented the entire thing via a series of hilarious videos on Instagram.

It all started when he went to buy milk. “Out of milk. Off tothe market,” tweeted Bruno, who will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in February.

With a suitcase boombox in hand and his red Dolce&Gabbana suit on, he danced his way out of his garage and down the street while singing his hit “Treasure.” He strut into the local liquor store and grabbed a carton of milk before making his way back home.

Along the way, he pulled out a cardboard “Treasure” sign and spun it around on the street corner as cars drove by.

“If I’m shinin too bright put yo shades on. Drive Smart. Drive Safe #Smafe #BrunoLuhDaStreets,” he wrote.

Watch Bruno bring his moves and swag to the streets.

He took to instagram to give his latest track “Treasure” a dope new video, doing it all in 15 second clips, and keeping it rather entertaining.

Bruno makes his way around town, rocking his track, and sharing with folks in the liquor store, on the street bench, and anywhere else his two feet can take him. Too dope, check out the clips after the jump and let us know your thoughts down below.

Funny little backstory on the store Bruno went to get his milk for the Treasure video clips he recently released:

I went into the liquor store where it was filmed and this guy was in Bruno's video for about a second hahaha. He told me the whole story. He said that Bruno came in and offered him $50, but the guy asked for $200 and Bruno tried to go down to $150, but Bruno ended up giving him the $200 anyways. Bruno filmed, did his thing, and actually bought the milk hahaha. Oh, and it turns out that this was actually FILMED 6 MONTHS AGO. So no, I did not see Bruno there but I did get to meet this awesome guy haha.
