Rock Hall Scrambling to Explain Rejection of Donna Summer

May 18, 2012

EuroWeb

*Why was Donna Summer, who died Thursday of lung cancer, never inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Longtime member Elton John weighed in almost immediately following the singer’s death, calling the snub “a total disgrace.” Now, the person in charge of nominations to the Cleveland-based Hall has issued a blunt statement, blaming voters for the “error,” reports Billbaord.com.

“There is absolutely no doubt that the extraordinary Donna Summer belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Jon Landau, the chairman of the nominating committee, told the New York Times. “Regrettably, despite being nominated on a number of occasions, our voting group has failed to recognize her — an error I can only hope is finally and permanently rectified next year.”

Summer was nominated for this year’s class, but was passed over. Inductees included Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Faces, Guns N’ Roses and The Beastie Boys.

The issue with voters could very well be the genre of music Summer is most associated with, disco, which has a quiet presence in the museum. A scan of members reveals only two groups that could be categorized as “disco,” The Bee Gees (1997) and ABBA (2010) — however, both have diverse pop portfolios, much like Summer, who thrived in dance-pop and rock after disco fizzled out in the late-1970s.

Landau is correct in saying Summer “belongs” in the Hall, having earned 32 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 in her career, with 14 of those reaching the top 10. Her biggest singles include her four No. 1s “MacArthur Park,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls” and “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” with Barbra Streisand. In 1983 she returned to the Hot 100′s top 10 with the No. 3 anthem “She Works Hard For the Money.”

One dance group that many believe should join Summer soon is Chic, the Nile Rodgers-led band behind hits like “Le Freak” and “Good Times.” They’ve been nominated for inclusion seven times since 2003.

A bunch of manure, for real! They have had a history of being resistant to women... I guess they thought a token nomination was enough of an honor for someone of Donna's caliber. rolleyes

I said last night that they were gonna induct her next year on a sympathy vote. And that's exactly what they're about to do...

The Hall of Fame is pathetic. They've been snubbing her for years and had numerous chances to honor her while she was breathing.

The statement they released is a disgrace as far as I'm concerned.

I just wonder what excuse they'd have for not inducting CHIC if something ever happens to Nile...

Does anybody remember Vonzell Solomon? She made it to the top 3 on Idol in Season 4, Carrie Underwood's year.

She did a cover of On The Radio. Always thought she did a good job.

RIP Donna.

"When I first met Donna Summer, she removed her jacket and covered up Vanity's legs, who at that moment was sporting a camisole, and asked Vanity "Baby aren't you cold?" Here, put this on, you look cold!

There she was, Donna Summer, beautiful, smart, successful, and mercy, mercy, me, a Women, (not a girl) Sexy and all Breath taking! (I was Koo Koo for her Coco Mocha!) and she called me: "Cutie" t...oo!

Bye Lady Summer, and thanks for ruining me for every other woman that summer. May Peace Forver Be Upon You & yours.
Love,
Jesse ♥

(Yes, I know fellas, Vanity was and still is a stunner, but she has always been like a lil sister to me and still is. Vanity, Susan & I we're very close friends and I will always carry love in my heart for them both)"

Love you ~ Jesse Johnson
I was shocked to hear about Donna. She was so vital the last time I saw her a few months ago. I loved doing the duet with her. She had an amazing voice and was so talented. It's so sad." ~ Barbra Streisand

Rest in Peace dear Donna Summer. Your voice was the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade. ~ Quincy Jones
So shocking to hear about the passing of Donna Summer. In the 70s, she reigned over the disco era and kept the disco jumping. Who will forget 'Last Dance.' A fine performer and a very nice person. ~ Aretha Franklin
Donna and I had a friendship for over 30 years. She is one of the few black women I could speak German with and she is one of the few friends I had in this business. ~ Chaka Khan
We will miss Donna Summer! She changed the world of music with her beautiful voice and incredible talent. ~ Janet Jackson

I can't believe we've lost another wonderful singer. Donna, like Whitney, had one of the greatest voices ever. I loved her records. She was the disco queen, and will remain so. I knew her and found her to be one of the most likable and fun people ever. She will be missed and remembered. ~ Dolly Parton

I could care less about the R&R HOF. Several amazing or important acts have been snubbed. Janet, George Michael, Whitney, Donna, Luther, Hall & Oates, Chaka, Chic, Cyndi, Cher (Whether or not you like her, she's been a huge influence in music), Rick.... I could go on and on. Yet several bands and people I've never heard or didn't really do anything out of the ordinary made it in. Why does George Harrison deserve to be inducted as a solo artist? What has he done more than the above artists? It's not only biased, but horrrible in its choices.

5 Artists Who Wouldn’t Be Here Without Donna Summer

5 Artists Who Wouldn't Be Here Without Donna SummerThe news Donna Summer passing is still fresh. While many are saddened by the passing because of her style and grace, we will always remember her for her musical contribution. Part of that contribution is the artists she inspired directly or indirectly. In remembrance of the Queen of Disco, The Urban Daily is running down a list of five artists who took a cue from Donna Summer to create their own musical career.

Rest in Peace Donna Summer!

Beyonce

When Beyonce performed at the 2008 Grammy Awards to honor Tina Turner, she mentioned Summer as an influence during the performance’s opening. Without Summer, Beyonce wouldn’t know the art of sexy seductive singing while keeping it classy. Tell me another singer who could sing the provocative lyrics of “Love To Love Ya Baby” without sounding like a cheap floozy? Beyonce took that notion and ran with it. As suggestive as Bey’s “Naughty Girl” video was, it still remained classy. Give the Queen her due.

Aaliyah

Though Aaliyah is praised for her dancing and airy coos, she was the product of Donna Summer meeting the hip-hop generation. Disco was huge for a time until everything began to all sound the same. Donna Summer came in and changed that. Aaliyah did the same thing for hip-hop and R&B. When everyone was chanting “Disco sucks!” they left Donna Summer alone because her music was all authentic. Aaliyah weathered her share of storms in the business, but we remember her as R&B’s angel because her music had an authentic feel.

Pink

Before you start looking at your computer screen all crazy, just hear me out. Pink has always won because of her talent and bold attitude. Donna Summer had the same attitude. Summer only approached things differently. Whereas Pink would punch you in the face and then ask questions, Donna Summer was strong in her views but knew you attract more bees with honey rather than vinegar. On top of personality traits, Pink definitely references Donna Summer’s work in more than a few of her videos.

Brandy

Their vocal ranges and tones are totally different. However, Brandy was influenced by Summer because of stage presence. It is obvious Brandy is not a dancer. She tries, but it just doesn’t seem to be her thing. Brandy had to have studied a Donna Summer tape once or twice to realize you could have a presence on stage without having intricite dance routines. Donna Summer was a stand and deliver type of woman. Brandy is still trying to get there.

Christina Aguilera

Donna Summer and Christina Aguilera are two of the best voices in music. Though Christina has a little more power behind the vocals than Summer, she still had to learn a thing or two. Summer had serious vocal chops and knew how to compliment uptempo dance numbers with vocal power. When Christina Aguilera debuted with “Genie In A Bottle,” she displayed those same techniques. You know how the saying goes, if it aint broke don’t fix it. Christian Aguilera kept true to that notion during the beginning of her career and won. She started losing when she started thinking she was Lady Gaga and not Donna Summer.

Who else should have or could have made this list?

Her family should decline the induction.

Now what would it be worth for?

Donna was inducted in people's heart long ago, and she knew it.

That's enough.

Now they know what they can do with that induction...

Donna was an icon and I am going to paraphrase an article I read.

We came out of the turbulent 60's with the Civil Rights Marches after the deaths of MLK, JFK, Robert Kennedy into the 70's. And with the 70's came the new age of understanding where Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Other, and this new sub-culture (Gays) could all be united. And who better to trumpet this new age of understanding than a creature who is sometimes misunderstood...sometimes not given the credit it deserves...but strong nonetheless...and that's a Black woman. That Black woman was Donna Summer. Because with this new age of understanding there needed to be common ground....and yes, that common ground was a dance floor. It didn't matter your race, size, or sexual orientation...everyone was equal on that dance floor and the voice to lead them all in this new age of understanding was/is Donna Summer.

RIP Donna. I will love you forever. Teena Marie, Vesta, Etta James, Whitney, and now Donna...we're losing all of our "real" diva voices.

Greg

Thanks for all the info/links Soul.

You know what, fuck' um.

I don't know if Ms. Summer's was hurt by this slight or had feelings of indifference, I hope it was the latter. As I've mentioned before award shows and honorary halls have little credibility in the grand scheme of things. Politics and bullshit go hand and hand and to think these types of petty slights won't be apart of these types of "honors"... is to be pretty naive.

The discography tells you an artist/musician/ songwriters worth. No ones needs to tell anyone why or why not an artist/musicians is imporant to them or how they influenced music. In my opinion nobody needs to preference their remarks, "Donna Summer's was more than a Disco singer". Was her music excellent? Yes! Could the woman stand flat footed and singer her ass off? Yes. Has her disography stood the test of time? Yes. In an industry that is cut throat and sadly being talented doesn't guarantee a life long career, Ms. Summer's had it working on all cylinders. A singer/songwriter who broke ground in a genre but wasn't boxed in by it... she did it all R&B, Soul/Rock, Gospel, and yes Disco.

As one of the articels mentioned, listen to her favorite song, "Last Dance". From the first notes she softly bellows to singing the lyrics that rap a sense of sadness, longing, and resolve all into one. There's a difference between singing on key and being a singer. Ms. Summers was a singer/songwriter who stood at the top of her art, her craft. Period.
