Tori Amos' New Orchestral Album, Gold Dust

June 12, 2012

Link

In celebration of her 20-year career in music, Tori Amos has decided to do something different for her 13th album. Titled Gold Dust, the new release features reworkings of songs from Amos’ catalog in an orchestral setting with the help of the Metropole Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley.

"My relationship with all of these songs has changed over the years and they have changed my life,” said Amos in a statement. “It wasn’t just about capturing the past it was about realizing that the songs had a new narrative now -- ten or twenty years later than they did when I originally recorded them.”

While a full track list is yet to be announced, the singer revealed that “Silent All These Years,” “Precious Things,” “Flavor,” “Jackie's Strength,” “Winter,” and “Snow Cherries from France” will be part of the album.

Gold Dust is expected to hit stores in October.

Hmmm... first Kate with Directors Cut, now Tori with this.... I'll buy it of course, but it's never going to be as exciting as a proper album.

Still, hopefully I'll catch her on one of the live dates. The Night Of Hunters tour was amazing.

These are what I consider to be Tori's high points post-1996:

The original bootlegs 12-CD box set.

Legs and Boots series - 27 digital live albums.

Welcome to Sunny Florida live DVD with Scarlet's Hidden Treasures EP

I'd check out American Doll Posse, To Venus and Back, From the Choirgirl Hotel, Scarlet's Walk and The Beekeeper (in that order)...i'd skip Night of Hunters unless you're a classical music aficionado who will enjoy seeing modern interpretations of classic compositions.

That said...the Night of Hunters tour was hands down the best Tori Amos concert I've ever been to. And I've seen them all since 1991.

I'm ok with Tori taking some time to figure out her next direction and releasing an orchestrated recollection of previously released tracks. And I'm definitely ok with an orchestral tour behind the project.

If I thought Night of Hunters was the tour she was born to do, I can only imagine what a complete orchestra will be lilke!

Thanks for the suggestions guys.. After the mid-90's my musical taste went in a totally different direction, but it'll be good to get reacquainted with someone whose music helped soothe the horrors of my high school years!

Change it one more time..

You and me both!

Let us know how you get on. She really does have one of the strongest catalogues of any singer/songwriter of the last 30 years IMO.

I'm excited about this! If it's anything like Joni Mitchell's "Travelogue", I will be satisfied!

If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

This will either be really brilliant or elevator music. Hopefully it will be at least as weird as Night of Hunters.

Yeah, Earthquakes, Pink and Pele are her holy piano trilogy. 92 - 97 was her peak. But she has had some great stuff since then. Sad thing is that she put out a lot of sprawling 20-track albums after 2000 and kind of diluted her output. But the gems are still there.

If you want to download just 1 collection of post-Pele tracks from i-Tunes, I'd compile a CD like this:

1. Spark (From the Choirgirl Hotel)

2. Jackie's Strength (From the Choirgirl Hotel)

3. Playboy Mommy (From the Choirgirl Hotel)

4. Bliss (To Venus and Back)

5. Spring Haze (To Venus and Back)

6. Cooling (live) (To Venus and Back)

7. Rattlesnakes (Strange Little Girls)

8. A Sorta Fairytale (Scarlet's Walk)

9. Pancake (Scarlet's Walk)

10. Gold Dust (Scarlet's Walk)

11. Barons of Suburbia (The Beekeeper)

12. Sweet the Sting (The Beekeeper)

13. Big Wheel (American Doll Posse)

14. Bouncing off Clouds (American Doll Posse)

15. Welcome to England (Abnorbally Attracted to Sin)

16. Curtain Call (Abnormally Attracted to Sin)

17. Fearlessness (Night of Hunters)

This is pretty good mix of her best singles and unreleased tracks that will fit on one CD. If you want to download a Top 25 (because 25 sounds like a good number), go for these as well:

18. Cruel (From the Choirgirl Hotel)

19. Concertina (To Venus and Back)

20. Taxi Ride (Scarlet's Walk)

21. Carbon (Scarlet's Walk)

22. Dragon (American Doll Posse)

23. Winter's Carol (Midwinter Graces)

24. Maybe California (Abnormally Attracted to Sin)

25. Shattering Sea (Night of Hunters)

This is not a list I would compile. lol Everyone's taste is different so if the orger that asked is even bothering to still follow this thread, I would recommend to go to iTunes and listen to the 90 second samples of the songs from the missing albums and make a decision based on that.
