Exactly, not to mention the fact that it's precisely BECAUSE of the stereotypes that shit like this sells. The people who sign artists have a certain idea of black women, and the people who buy music have pretty much that same certain idea. I'm not crazy about Nicki (although I loooove the video for "Fly") but putting all the blame on her is naive. Which isn't to say she's above criticism -- we absolutely should criticize people who use their power to shit all over their own, but we also need to understand why they're doing it. And why, no matter how much we criticize Nicki, as long as stereotypes and racism persist there will ALWAYS be people like her who are going to use the stereotypes people have of them to make money. It's easy to point the finger at her, but a lot harder to actually confront the larger system that makes it easier for black women to make money shaking their asses than to enter a master's program in physics.
