ALL THINGS VAN HALEN- Post Here, Tour, Albums, etc.

As the biggest Van Halen fan on the org, and the guys getting a lot of threads recently cause of the upcoming tour.

Discuss DLR era, Sammy era, Even Garry era, music videos etc.

The only era that matters to me is the six pack!
Before I got hip to Prince I was trying to figure out Edward on my guitar.
I was aware of P by the 2nd lp, but by "Controversy" he had my full attention!
But Eddie's brown sound had quite a head start!!!
GnH you may be the biggest Van Halen fan on the org, but I'm the biggest EVH fan on the org!
Finally able to afford a vintage 100 watt Marshall Super Lead amp to get me a little closer to the brown biggrin

I have barely heard anything since Balance. How are the new tracks on the 1996 best of album and Best of Both Worlds? VH III? Any of these worth tracking down or should I be content with the old albums?

I have really low expectations for the new album but I would like to see them go back to much shorter songs. After Dave left the songs kept getting longer and longer and now five-six minute songs are quite common. I think they would have a bit more punch and impact if they went back to doing more three minute songs.

Personally, I think that "Me Wise Magic" of the 1996 Greatest Hits album is an underrated classic, yeah, I say CLASSIC, perfect chorus by DLR, and a good 1984 vibe...the other new track was faceless, though...can't even remember the name, lol

VH III : abomination. Dull as a brick. Even the "hell of a rocker" (Fire in the Hole) is boring, in my opinion. The album sounds like a harder version of Balance, but with even weaker material...

New tracks of Best of Both Worlds: nah, ok, but not great, they sound like 80s leftovers with a modern, 00s production.

As far as the post Balance tracks,

Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More from Best of Volume 1, good stuff and worth getiing. Imo.

If anything because of reunion with DLR for those two tracks.

The 3 tracks from BOBW with Sammy on vocals, not to my liking. Even if you like the Sammy years, these songs aren't up to par. Imo.

VHIII, first off vocally Gary sounds a lot like Sammy on this album. Lol. Never understood that. Second, if you don't care for the longer songs, well this album has the longest song lengths of any VH release. Almost every song is 5 minutes plus. It's very dark as well. A lot VH fans despise this album. I guess if you look at it more as a Ed solo project, it's more tolerable. Imo. But it's as far as you're gonna get from the classic 6 pack and fun party vibe of CVH.

Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I just really, really hope the production on this new record isn't all in keeping with the times. I want it to sound like Ted Templeman and Donn Landee, with the vocals and guitar pushed back a little. Not directly in your face like every record has since going digital completely ruined recording.

I am putting a lot of faith in Dave to make this new music palatable. I don't expect him to sing that great, that's not a big deal. But I'm looking to him for art direction on this whole thing. I might as well say Wolfie is #2 on my hope list, because the elder Van Halens are really the obstacles to their own namesake here.

Me Wise Magic is a good song, it's worth checking out.

Might i add Balance was[And is] my least fav Sammy VH album.

But after listening recently again, it's caught some quality stuff. I think Not Enough has some great string & violin arrangements that sound fantastic. And Don't Tell Me[What Love Can Do] is one of Sammy's best with the group.

OMG the new tracks on Best Of Both Worlds sound so thrown together. There not bad per say, but with such a versatile song carrear they decide to do up for breakfest??, Learning To See had potential but is a bit dull.

VHIII Despite being an Extreme fan, i dug Fire In The Hole & How Many Times Say's I

The rest is thrown together lol literally the song writing & musicianship was at a low when they made that one.

I remember being somewhat interested in III when it was released and the lead single/video (can't remember which song it was) received a fair bit of airplay but the album quickly sank like a stone and I kind of forgot about it.

Honestly I would have preferred a new Extreme album in 1998. wink

Van Halen is really like a tale of two bands, like Sammy said, Eddie wasnt really running things, it was Dave's band then it was Sammy's band then it got ugly, Gary Cherone was a victim, he was dead because VH fans were going to hate this regardless if the music was good or not, the fact that Extreme were viewed for "more than words" and Nuno was propped up as a successor to the Eddie van halen wizard throne, VH fans hated Gary, and its a shame, but im glad Gary and Extreme are back together because that unit was strong. When things didnt work with III Eddie made it like it was Garys fault, and i never trusted or believed in Eddie since that.

As for the Music, i liked Me Wise Magic, good track, also Dont Tell Me was probably one of the best Sammy Rockers with VH, the new tracks are Best Of was so forced and the sexual innuendo lyrics on Up For Breakfast sounded more like a DLR song than something sammy would do.

New Van Halen song She's The Woman". It's actually a song that was a demo from the 70's.
Wolfie sounds awesome! He's burning "Hot Sauce" on that bass!!!

No problem! It was great to see them in a club setting. It would be awesome if they had the energy to do what Prince does. Big arena set and then an afterjam! Not gonna happen though, but this was a good way to reintroduce themselves!

I think they are mining the vault for some of the new album. Besides "She's The Woman", the next single sounds like a reworking of their old demo "Down In Flames" here's a sample.

"Tattoo" Snippet Available on Amazon

Take a listen, interesting....

I hope they did something with "Big Trouble" that's one of their funkiest unreleased songs and it would sound incredible with Wolfgangs big fat bass tone!!!
