Oh yeah, the award was definitely bought. I was wondering just what exactly is the criteria for this award. Other than paying money for it.

I don't understand why they couldn't give her artist of the decade instead, I really would have been so excited and happy for her getting an award with that title cause I was enjoying her during her second and third album a lot as well as with destiny's child, and admire her work ethic and think she has talent though she doesn't maximize it. Artist of the Milennium is just so....vain. Her performance was cool though I guess. And yeah, I know MJ and Mariah got those awards at the WMA's in 2000, but they worked HARD to get it, especially MJ. I'm not just saying that as a biased fan, but what he did was NOT easy or even possible to do and took very hard work and broke barriers....Beyonce has a lot more ways to go before getting such a big honor like that, plus didn't the milennium just begin? Or did she want it before the world ends? lol

lol

Usually can't stand Bey, but her performance was pretty good and ballsy...the first half, anyway. After that, it just reminded me of her VMA performance of "Single Ladies" with a kajillion girls on stage. Cringeworthy moments during the tribute...some of them folks got the side eye. confused Song still sucks.

RiRi: predictable.

Britney: unfortunately predictable. Seriously, I wanna pull for this girl, but it's times like these where I think she just needs to give it up.

Justin&Selena: cute couple.

Black Eyed Peas: meh.

Yeah I loved the performance, but still hate the song and video, very disappointing. I never saw that VMA's performance, will check it out later.

Britney is finished. She needs to retire and fast. I feel so much pity for her. Her voice is awful though she has some good singles, and some good album tracks, but I really think having a family fucked her up for good and her mental health isn't good and she just keeps doing so horrible on her performances and is hyped up for them just cause of her name. I feel bad for what she's been through.

I am not a Beiber fan at all and was all like WTF when he won, but I guess he seems like a very sweet kid and I noticed he was the only one that entire night that thanked God. Selena is adorable.

Black Eyed Peas are here because of technology. lol

Anyone else notice the triangle in Beyonce's performance on the screen? lol

It seems performances of today are all about lights, special effects, cd tracks playing in the back (even with a band on stage), a whole bunch of noise and chaos and complete sleeziness, with absolutely no substance.

Cee Lo's performance was excellent, but Bey's performance was one of the best live performances she's ever done. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't win an Emmy award for that one.

Stephen's getting senile...or his mind was never with him.

Beyonce's performance was great, but to compare it to Motown 25???

Michael was only armed with a sparkly jacket, a fedora, and the Moonwalk. And he made the entire world take notice.

Not to mention, he had a kick-ass song that's STILL in heavy rotation almost 30 years later! Run The World=Billie Jean? dunce

On Beyonce:

Although you can typically consider me in the "I wish she would challenge herself more camp," The first half of the performance was excellent use of technology. The interactive stuff was hot. No denying that. After that it was more of the same from her. She gave it her all though, but more of the same nonetheless. I mean, we've seen the million girl army on stage before, Beyonce. The song is still trash, no green screen or special affects can help that.

Sidenote: Kelly Rowland's body was sexy without doing nothing at all. She looked more toned than usual. She looks great!

That video montage was overloaded with BS for me. When Mathew said she's "already an icon," I said aw hell, here we go sad Why the need to offer all this kind of praise now for someone who's just 15 yrs or so deep is just beyond me. Icon? A lot of silly radio hits don't make an icon for me. Let the girl grow. She's been in safemode from day one. I write all of this because I'd actually like to see her be a dope artist, to see her maximize her potential.

Britney needs to get off that ritalin or whatever she's been on. It's like she's phoning it in but in person. Why bother? confused

I agree with this, she has so much talent, but does not use it to her full advantage and is stuck in a box.

What talent??????????????????????????????

do you realize you can go to any HBCU and find black girls with that "Talent" you keep saying she has. Its NOT so much. Beyonce is a mediocre dancer at best, she great at booty shaking and coochie poppin, I hear her sing live during that performance and it was okay, she actually didn't sound that great which is why she stop singing the background vocals. lol

im just SICK and tired of hearing people say she has so much talent and is not using it.

I posted some videos from 2006, before beyonce single ladies, and i believe beyonce gets all her stuff from other people.

i repeat: "you could take any of these black girls from an HBCU and give them the "beyonce treatment" (songs, marketing, videos, image) and they be deamed just as "talented" a beyonce."

the whole performance was typical, i knew at the end it would be coochin poppin, and squeezing 200 plus women on stage. It was the same, but added graphics, and didn't janet and MJ do this before??? when i saw her performing yes it did remind me of janet jackson feedback. I noticed that before Sean even posted that gif.

Please*.

I had an ephinany that Beyonce was going to try to have a "motown 25" with her performance....I saw she lifted A LOT of mj's This Is It tour concepts in that performance, and that intro with the yelling reminded me of Scream and Janet's Make Me. The graphics looked really cool, but as a dancer, not special and the song is still silly

I can say she's talented if I like, but I never said she is the most talented person on earth. She's talented for her generation and I rather the award go to her than someone else. I have a problem with her getting artist of the millenium instead of artist of the decade, and find it insulting to those who deserve it way more like mj who did get it 11 years ago. Liked the graphics, but continued to maintain in this thread and others that the song and music video are awful and the dancing offered nothing new.

I would have to say that the best part of that performance were the graphics and special effects. Those special effects are what made the performance well--special. Without them, all that’s left is Bey dancing & singing + a ton of girls jumping up and down on the stage.

lol I kept thinking those kind of things when watching babyface and stevie talk, and envy those who were older to remember the full experience of mj and janet at their peak....maybe subconsciouly they like her because of liking them as kids.....for me I used to light up with her cause of reminding me of artists I like and her hard work but having the talent to back it up(though I hear technique more than soul in her voice). However, Britney doing that annoys me cause her voice is terrible (despite a lot of good songs) and I see her as copying a black artist (Janet) and getting more credit to marketable people who think she's great and don't think janet's all that and it makes me want to kick their ass for being so dense for not seeing she paved the way. Everyone is already MJ inspired and it's obvious, but Janet gets no credit, it's always Madonna, even though I love her too. Someone may say Janet gave MJ the Living Legend Award....but when Beyonce got that award, I couldn't help but think no one really wanted to give it to her but her family, cause they'll all be gone when things go downhill, and deep down, she knows it will someday.

What is a millennium award and why is Beyonce getting one?

Mj_beyonce

Beyonce Giselle Knowles is a pop legend. In her 10+ years in the music industry, Beyonce has outworked, outtwirked and outperformed many of her peers with ease and skill. She's sold countless albums, won 16 Grammys and she deserves almost every accolade she's been awarded. But Billboard's decision to a...nium Award is a headscratcher.

We're only 11 years into the new millennium and we've already decided to crown Bey the queen of the next 1,000 years?

Of course, Beyonce isn't the first artist to be awarded with a seemingly bizarre "millenium" award. Michael Jackson famously got a "millenium" award at the 2002 VMAs, or at least he thought he did. (Jackson fans will still argue that MTV pulled a switcheroo on Michael) But he actually got a real life millennium award from the World Music Awards in 2000.

Mariah Carey was also crowned the "best selling female artist of the millenium" that same year by the World Music Awards. Keep in mind that Soundscan only started tracking sales data in 1991, which means that Mariah only began "competing," if you will, in the last 9 years of the millennium. Also, take into consideration the fact that "records" of any form were only sold in the 20th century, rendering the "millennium" part of the award is pretty meaningless. Even Mariah herself seemed stumped about the accolade in her acceptance speech.

The intent behind these awards is obvious: Deify a favorite pop star by rewarding them for their entire body of work way before they die. It's red meat for the base and the bigger the star honored, the larger the draw in audience. It's a vanity award, really. But you could say that about most award shows. Unless you're Kanye West. Who, as we all know, takes awards shows very, very seriously.

Beyonce_sla

The World Music Awards waited until the end of the millennium to dole out their awards last time, but it appears that Billboard wants to jump ahead of the pack and crown Beyonce the best at the beginning of the millennium rather than waiting for 2999. "Single Ladies" and all of its leotard glory would surely be a distant, faded memory at that point in time. It'll be the equivalent of renaissance music to future generations.

It's possible that Billboard doesn't mean to crown Beyonce as THE artist of the millennium with their award, but then again that's exactly what the name implies, so that's their fault for the misconception.

Perhaps we should just stick to awarding artists for a decade worth of work. Heck, we can even deal with centuries, cause you can argue that Michael Jackson was indeed one of the greatest artists in the last century. But trying to crown someone for the past or future thousand years is one leap too far. It's like calling an album the "Best Album in the Whole Galaxy." It's too big, too broad to have any real meaning in the moment that it's being given.

If we're gonna make up awards for Beyonce, how about "Best Hair Flip While Standing In Front Of a Wind Machine," "Lace Front Artist of the Year" or "Best Use of Bedazzled Costuming by a Pop Star." Just cut this millennium nonsense out.

i was wowed with beyonce first album, cause it really was something fresh and different. But now its the same stuff over and over again IMO. Same thing different background. And her music went down hill. at first you don't noticed the small things, but after being around 10 plus years and I look back and see no substance, thats when i call beyonce a "Fraud" lol

I was very disappointed with her first album and felt she was VERY undeserving of those 4 grammys, and I loved Destiny's Child. Crazy in Love took a year to grow on me, I liked Naughty Girl but got sick of it from overload, and I already knew Dangerously in Love from Survivor. I thought she would have a Mariah style or something like funk on the Austin Power 3 soundtrack, so I was disappointed. I loved her performance with Prince though a lot, and she won me over with her second album, especially with the re-release so I decided to check the tour since I doubted she would peak again and I was blown away, and before this I didn't want to spend any tour money on anyone other than michael, janet, madonna or prince but took the chance and it was worth it smile I liked the first disc of the third album too, the ballads really , really suit her and sound classy. But I heard no musical evolution or anything like that, she never really evolved and this tour was good too, I went only cause of the MJ tribute and the ballads otherwise it was a repeat of the other tour. I don't believe I will be supporting the next project though I'll sample the tracks.

Beyonce's performance was awesome, but her dress was atrocious. People just don't know how to layout and wear clothes right anymore.

Bieber was stupid for kissing that girl. He's already started to become played-out, and now he's gonna lose even more of his little fans because of that.

And why does Rihanna have to make it a point to thank Jay-Z every time she wins an award?

The dancing was like some HS talent show, vocals were not great, and I am so through with these award shows. They are a complete joke now. The "artists" now have to tweet/jack each other off to make them think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread when in fact it's moldy at best.

And Nicki Minaj was just pitiful. disbelief I was embarrassed for her. And Britney? Lawd... lol I closed my eyes when she and Rihanna "sang" together and I couldn't tell which was which. I love Rihanna's SM song but when I heard Michelle Obama saying Bey was a role model for girls and I watched her coochie poppin' and Britney and Ri pole dancing...well, I just give the fuck up. shrug sigh

I would have to say that the best part of that performance were the graphics and special effects. Those special effects are what made the performance well--special. Without them, all that’s left is Bey dancing & singing + a ton of girls jumping up and down on the stage.

i can't believe all those celebrities tweets, some of them grew up during the time MJ was in his prime.

Adam the first man was near to perfection, after that each generation gets dumber then the next, which explains why beyonce's mediocre talent wows people like a light up toy wows a baby... lol

The same thing has been said about Janet in the past.

Only time will tell what Beyonce's impact will be.

Janet got the flack because of her last name and being in the shadow of her family, she broke out of that. Even if Beyonce is a stronger vocalist, Janet is easier on the ears and does different things with her voice for different songs, I have yet to hear Beyonce do that. I don't know about all Janet fans, but I do know she's not the first dance diva and there were people before her, but she carved her own path. Even if Beyonce has potential, there is something so contrived about it all and I can't put my finger on it. I know she's a hard worker and she has talent, but there is so much payola for having such a vain award like that. I wouldn't want to accept that award if I were her and ask for it to be a better title if they must.....I really think artist of the decade would have been deserving and I really would have been happy for her, but it's hard to be now.
