I'm tired of Janet fans thinking that there is some sort of conspiracy in place to short-change her on credit, and having a "Jan Brady" complex when it comes to Madonna's fame and influence. As soon as I read the first sentence in the OP, I knew that it would be mere seconds before someone cried foul on her not naming Janet. Britney has cited Janet numerous times throughout her career as an influence; so have others. But I notice that whenever a poppy, dance-y female artist cites Madonna's name, or someone else makes the comparison, without mentioning Janet in the same breath, her fans throw a fit.
When Glee did the all Madonna episode, at another forum I visited there was a bunch of whining and complaining about how they should do one for Janet too; and even a petition set up for it to happen. I recall when Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" video came out, a number of Janet fans ardently trying to argue a "Rhythm Nation" comparison to match the one being made to "Vogue." This bitterly competitive tit-for-tat mentality is stale. On the flip-side, I never see Madonna fans act so neurotic and embittered when Janet gets mentioned and acknowledged over her. If Beyonce or Keri Hilson do an interview gushing about Janet's influence over them, would Madonna's fans collectively get upset and say "wait a minute?!" [Edited 3/12/11 23:06pm]

well said I also remember in 2008 when Madonna was inducted into the Rock N'Roll Hall of Fame, alot of Janet fans were rolling their eyes, implying that Madonna didn't deserve it.This type of behavior is childish and embarassing.

I agree with you. Every artist mentioned in the excerpt was white. They didn't even mention Beyonce as a contemporary to Britney.
Comparisons are often made based on race even when artists of different races might be more similar than same race artists. It's stupid. Also, given the ideologly of white supremacy, there is always a hesitation for media to compare a white artist to a black one. Therefore, Brritney is not a "white" Janet. Whereas blacks artists have at times been deemed "the black" whoever, like when Jimi Hendrix was referred to as the black Elvis or Prince was "the black" version of several white artists throughout his career. It's no complex, but when you see Janet's influence and it is never given credit then yes, as a fan, it makes you crazy. When "Alejandro" came out, critics immediately said that it was a cross between "Vogue" and "Rhythm Nation", but in all the blogs after that, the only thing you read was "Oh, it's SO Vogue." And as far as the dance-pop females go, it seems that there can never be one to come out who isn't immediately compared to Madonna, even if they have little to nothing in common with her (I still say Lady Gaga is equally if not more like Grace Jones than Madonna with her crazy antics and get-ups, but Gaga will never be compared to Grace in the media). If it's a black-white thing then, as sad as that is, it's at least a tangiable enough reason as to why Janet always gets the shaft.
And, yes, the whole Glee thing is just ridiculous. When Britney Spears can get an episode devoted to her before the woman she's patterened herself after (Janet) can, even when certain members of the cast have dropped Janet's name, then...well...
I have been a Madonna fan for years and I love her work, but the way the media eagerly jumps on any new pop starlet as The Second Coming of Madonna, even if they have barely anything in common with her, can be annoying and tiresome. Janet's influence is in most if not all of these younger crop of female pop performers. It's a shame she barely gets recognized for it. And, I don't know what sites or blogs you've been on, because Madonna fans are constantly berating and throwing shade Janet's way.

Like JT .... Britney stopped talking Janet once she met MJ ...... Janet is used by most artists as a way to get to meet MJ.....

Not that it matters all that much....I believe alot of female artist will be riding Jan's clit/tit (which ever term you choose) once she produces some new hot music. They'll always be naysayers but people tend to be followers more so than leaders, especially modern pop/r&b artists. Right now, Janet's not as en vouge as she once was. Some of this is age, some of it is the lack of hit music, some of it is remnants of the SB backlash, some of it is the ole out of sight out of mind, etc. But rest assured, if she was to create something undeniably hot, that everyone was feeling, everybody would soon wake up from their self-imposed amnesia. I feel like I'm back in 2004 with this type of thread. Seriously, you guys? Seriously? If Britney and Beyonce wants to shout to the mountaintops that Madonna and Janet were their idols respectively, let them. I doubt no one's forcing them to say it with a gun on their noggins.
And wasn't this originally about BRITNEY?!

People have been saying that for years and here we are 13 years later still chucking out #1's.

^^Yeah! Whatever you think about her, I guess it's save to say, that she's here to stay and won't go away anytime soon!

Yea, she just earned her 4th #1.... [Edited 3/13/11 12:44pm]

Right. He claimed Janet was one of his biggest influences. She even mentored him when he was in that shitty group *NSYNC. They opened for her The Velvet Rope tour.
Yes, she's a fake. | |

This thread was about Britney, Madonna and Plastic Surgery and Janet and MJ always find a way to creep into it. Sneaky! HAHA

Ch...
LOL, Britney only mentioned Janet a couple of times (MTV iCON special and on TRL when Janet was brought up). Other then that the bitch wants to be discrete about it. Like I said, it's TOO obvious that her whole career is influenced by Janet - from her style to her choreography. By the way, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry reference Madonna all the time but Janet fans don't care because they aren’t influenced by Janet. So no, I don’t agree that there’s this tit-tat mentality. The whole Glee thing happened prior to Madonna’s episode, LMAO.

That was a part of my point earlier in the thread. The mainstream is more concerned about Ciccone.

YASSS!! That's another thing I've noticed! It's seems like Madonna is not brought up unless the Interviewer or the MEDIA, brings her up.

^ Y'all acting like that's a new discovery or something.
HELLO! It's been going on since the beginning of time.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Um come on now. Madonna is seen as the female equivalent to MJ so she's always brought up and seen as the ideal pop female artist. Whereas Janet is seen as MJ's sister.

DEAD at Lady Gaga earning 3 #1's since her debut in 2008 and Britney only earning 4 since her debut in 1999.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Lady Gaga was born in the digital era. If Spears arrived around the same time she'd have about 10 right now.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's hard to believe but the time Britney emerged and the time Gaga emerged are two different stories. Digital sales definitely help Gaga whereas Britney had radio. Why you think Rihanna got so many number-ones in this day and age?

And shit I'd rather have 5 #1 albums (about to be 6 and should be 7) anyway. Floptina collected her 4 #1 singles in a quicker time-frame but so what and who cares.

I've never heard MJ brought up By the Interviewer, he seems to always be brought by the Artist that is being interviewed.
As opposed to the Interviewer always having to bring up Madonna's name.
