The ridicolous Rick James / Teena Marie hype in here

I don't get why people keep defending Rick James in here.

He started out as a mediocre funk artist, getting even more mediocre by releasing shallow disco-funk.

And that Teena Marie girl presented by him was just as mediocre.

Oh, and don't forget Rick James did get put in jail because he and his wife abducted another women, tied her up inside their house, and sexually abused her.

No strong music, no strong character.

Teena Marie was just delivering slick discofunk...nothing really soullfull, sincere.

Pretty sure no one overrates/hypes Rick James. Just a guy with a few good songs. Don't think anyone has him as one of the greatest. Teena Marie, she was alright. I only know the one song of hers though. Never got into her.

I wonder if you have any shame. It is appalling that you've chosen this time to defame Teena.

I will just comment on one part of your post...

Rick, did not "start out", as a funk artist. He in fact, started out years before in a group called the "Myna Byrds". Ths group also featured a cat named, Neal Young. Also Rick, is the only artist that I can think of, who created his OWN genre of music....That be it, Punk Funk. Before Rick, this music was unheard of and this is still the case, years after his death. As for Teena, she had a style all her own, a great talent and will be greatly missed.

Purple Diamond, Nobody knows about a white disco-singer like Teena Marie.

Everybody knows Rick James was a coked up freak who abused women.

And, take it or leave it, Solomon Burke will be reminded, not Rick or Teena

Let me say this CornyCornelius1973, the word is REMEMBERED not reminded and it's RIDICULOUS not ridicolus and as much as you want to change history.. YOU CAN'T!!!

Let me give you a taste of who this White Disco Singer has touched outside of the org...

Taraji P. Henson
"OMG!!!! RIP Teena Marie…speechless…shocked."

Questlove
"Educate.Learn.Absorb.Share. She was an amazing work of art. Most believed [Rick] James produced all her records. Truth is she produced these on her own…the mark of a true artist is when their album cuts get more love than the hits. Marie's magic was defined by her album cuts."

Kimora Lee Simmons
"RIP to the legendary Ms Teena Marie. Luv u always! We'll celebrate & sing in your memory!"

Common
"R.I.P. Lady T! Your rhyme in Square Biz is and will always be classic material…Teena and I are both Pisces and we believe that we've been here before. Thats why De Ja Vu is my favorite song."

Gamble & Huff
"We're shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Teena Marie. She was one of the most memorable, soulful and unique R&B vocalists to come out of Motown. We send or condolences to Teena's family, the entire Motown family and of course, our dear friend Berry Gordy."

Hill Harper
"RIP Teena Marie – an amazing songstress and trailblazer with so much soul and that's 'Square Biz.' We love you"

Holly Robinson Peete
"My heart is broken. Teena Marie was an R&B pioneer. She was also a beautiful authentic friend who I'll miss forever. RIP Lady T."

Kandi Burruss
"In memory of Teena Marie @thedjaone is playing her songs on our ride back to atl. An amazing artist"

Alicia Keys
"God bless Teena Marie and her family. Sending blessings and prayers I was just saing that 'Fire and Desire' is one of the most beautifully performed songs. Once a beautiful song, always a beautiful song. Certain songs just have that 'thing.' What a sangin lady."

Kim Whitley
"I spoke with her yesterday…Teena has passed. I just found out my friend is gone."

Q-Tip
"Some folks don't know who Teena Marie is…wow. You can run my mini Teena Marie playlist back to the top then do it again, hopefully a young singer can take this blueprint she left. RIP."

Roxanne Shante
"Ms. Teena taught me how to handle my 'Square Biz' Stop going 'Out on a Limb.' She also said I could not have made more noise even if 'I was a bell.' To never lose my 'Fire and Desire' because 'a Rose' by any other name is still a rose. That one day I would find my 'Portuguese Lover' and to keep my eyes open for 'Cassanova Brown,' but if you ever need me Shante just call out for 'Lady T.' RIP TEENA MARIE I LOVE YOU ROXANNE SHANTE"

Sheila E
"I will miss my girl Teena Marie. Real music by real people. God bless my sistah and her family. You will be missed."

Shirley Murdock
"R.I.P. Teena Marie! Father, Thank You for the gift you gave Teena Marie and for the Lady herself! 'Absent from the body...present with the Lord!' It's with this knowledge and knowing she loved you, we have peace and joy and the ability to celebrate her life! We lift up her family. Send your angels to strengthen and comfort them! In Jesus' name we pray, Amen!"

Teedra Moses
"I truly loved Teena Marie's music…her attitude on rec[ords] raised me as a woman [and] artist. RIP Teena Marie tru[e] blue eyed soul."

Tichina Arnold
"OMG! Sadly it is true. We lost a great one…please, please, please pray for the family and friends. My heart is so heavy right now."

Mary J. Blige
"Teena Marie inspired me vocally as a child. Her songs I sang in the mirror with a hair brush. I'm so hurt.I'll love you forever Teena Marie…in my heart she's Teena. So rest in peace Teena. I love you. Every girl that grew up in the hood with her blasting through the windows, cars and radio waves can feel me."

and in closing i'm gonna have to borrow a quote from a fellow orger

You have a right to your own opinion but you do NOT have a right to your own facts....

This cornelius person appears to be so upset that hardly anyone commented on the Solomon Burk thread so he/she feels the need to come here and bash Teena Marie. Sorry, but who is Solomon Burk? I grew up in the 70s and grew up on Soul music, yet, I never heard of Solomon Burk. I've even asked 3 people much older than I and they have no idea who he was either! So, cornelius, grow up and get over it. No one knew Solomon Burk. Teena Marie, however, is well known and loved all around the world. Hearing about her passing all over the internet, the news programs and hearing her music being played around the clock on the radio for the past 24 hours just drives home how influential and loved Teena is. Teena was a genius, a trailblazer. Who is Solomon Burk?

Instead of being a hit and run poster trying to stir up shit, have the willingness and courage to stay and debate your post. As for stating any facts, you maybe absolutley correct on calling out Rick James as a convicted felon but you're way off base for calling Ms. Marie overrated. Of the 1001 threads posted on this site per week, why did you choose to talk mess like this after someone's death? Do it while they're alive, fair game. Do it six months or a year after, fair game. All you end up with is looking like an asshole for this, enjoy your self.

This post is just as disrespectful as Cornelius'

Solomon was a soul pioneer and early rock n roll influence.

He was definitely influential and loved.

I'm all for showing respect for Teena Marie, but there's no need to disrespect anyone else who's passed on.

I think we may need to get used to ignorant posts by this new "ridicolous" poster (Cornelius1973) as I just read another one in the thread on Prince's reason for being a Jehovah Witness. He had very negative things to say about Prince's intelligence. I see that he just joined December 12 and maybe he just came here to start trouble. As someone else said, this is certainly not the time to talk s**t about Teena Marie while we are still reeling from her untimely death!

kit bradley, Solomon Burke is a soul pioneer. I don't know how old you are and why you are not aware of him, but he, too is someone you should check out. I'm not sure what Cornelius 1973's original post was about him, but Burke was an important figure in early soul music.

Timmy created this new thread about Mr Burke to get him out of the Teena Marie RIP thread because he came in that thread complaining that the Original Solomon RIP thread didnt get 20 post but Teena 'whom he feels is undeserving of the amount of posts" she has received since her passing..
