This cornelius person appears to be so upset that hardly anyone commented on the Solomon Burk thread so he/she feels the need to come here and bash Teena Marie. Sorry, but who is Solomon Burk? I grew up in the 70s and grew up on Soul music, yet, I never heard of Solomon Burk. I've even asked 3 people much older than I and they have no idea who he was either! So, cornelius, grow up and get over it. No one knew Solomon Burk. Teena Marie, however, is well known and loved all around the world. Hearing about her passing all over the internet, the news programs and hearing her music being played around the clock on the radio for the past 24 hours just drives home how influential and loved Teena is. Teena was a genius, a trailblazer. Who is Solomon Burk?

This post is just as disrespectful as Cornelius'

Solomon was a soul pioneer and early rock n roll influence.

He was definitely influential and loved.

I'm all for showing respect for Teena Marie, but there's no need to disrespect anyone else who's passed on.

How is saying I never heard of Solomon Burk being disrespectful? It's the truth! If it wasn't for seeing the post on this board, I would have never known he was dead. I hadn't heard or read about it anywhere else. He may have been influential at one time, I dont know because I've never heard any of his music or heard anyone else mention him until a few days ago. I'm not disrespecting anyone. I just brought it up because this cornelus person seemed so annoyed that so many of us were giving love to Teena but didn't extend the same kind of sympathy/memories towards Solomon Burk. And, again, probably because many people on this board have no idea who he is.

No strong music, no strong character.

Teena Marie was just delivering slick discofunk...nothing really soullfull, sincere.

kit bradley, Solomon Burke is a soul pioneer. I don't know how old you are and why you are not aware of him, but he, too is someone you should check out. I'm not sure what Cornelius 1973's original post was about him, but Burke was an important figure in early soul music.

I'm 40 years old and grew up on mostly soul music. I asked my mother and my aunt, who are both in their 60s, who Solomon Burke is? My mother had no idea who he was. My aunt says she seems to remember her mother (my grandmother) playing Solomon burk but she couldn't name any of his songs.

I disagree largely and fundamentally with what you are saying. The context that has been created by this phenominally self-hating and power less person, intruding on a moment in time where untold numbers of people are spiritually devistated by the death of Teena Marie, is without defense. What people are really and clearly saying has nothing to with Mr. Solomon Burke, but rather that Cornelius needs to step off of Lady T's neck. She died less than 24 hours before that bullshit was repeatedly posted in a hateful fashion. As far as the statement about the hype for Prince on a Prince website I think there is a strong possiblity that woogie's word choices were made hastily, and were not fully formed to match their intent - for this there is indeed a great measure of defense.

But I betcha my bottom dollar that Teena loved and respected Solomon Burke up a storm. Further I bethca my last breath that Solomon Burke would be mortified that his name has been brought up in this manner - respect? Maybe they are crooing a tune together just now.

Kit, this foolishness has a plan and a map, and is fully formed by the incindiary poster; this is not his/her first time to the "I'ma fuck with you because I have no real power or fullfilling love in this world rodeo." The poster is sitting back joyfully watching the org go after each other. Hold on to your composure, let this bullshit go and stop splitting hairs with people about Solomon Burke - I feel this is actually disrespectful to Teena. From my 31 years of loving her music I frankly doubt that she would want this crap going on in her name. Consider getting a Solomon Burke record for your mother and Aunt, I think they might love them.

Everyone isnt going to hear of everyone, regardless of the age of the person, popularity etc.....I mean the other day a girl i was talking to had never heard of the Bee Gees or seen Saturday Night Fever? so after i woke up from passing out, i explained it to her, and told her, forget going to see movies of today, SNF was a cult classic and had to be seen, especially for someone that wants to be in the film world. So alot of people have not heard of Solomon to be honest, alot know the name but wont know a song till you sing it to them, so its far from disrespect to not hear of someone, now if you havent heard of someone or own their work and pass comments on them then thats another story

I will just comment on one part of your post...

Rick, did not "start out", as a funk artist. He in fact, started out years before in a group called the "Myna Byrds". Ths group also featured a cat named, Neal Young. Also Rick, is the only artist that I can think of, who created his OWN genre of music....That be it, Punk Funk. Before Rick, this music was unheard of and this is still the case, years after his death. As for Teena, she had a style all her own, a great talent and will be greatly missed.

Wasn't Prince influence by rick James? Infact the first time I heard and saw Prince, the first person I thought about was Rick James.

It sounds like riverpoet to me. I could be wrong but it sounds just like him. I've gotten into it with him several times before. He knows I love Rick James and he also knows I love disco which are two things he hates. If it is riverpoet, that is why he continuously calls Rick James disco and with Teena Marie being a former member of the Rick James camp, that's why he's placing the disco label on her also (as if that's a bad thing, hell that's a fucking compliment as far as I'm concerned). What really makes me think it is him, is he made a comment in the other thread about Cameo being disco also. Riverpoet did that once before when we got into it.

I think it may be him though. Apparently he just loves to stir up shit. He did the same exact thing when Michael Jackson died also. Watch out though, when he gets his back up against the wall in a corner, he'll come out spurting racial shit.

I think you're right about who it is.

As for the disco comments, a real soul fan would know that disco was a part of the style in a certain era. A Prince fan should certainly know this after hearing "Just As Long As We're Together" or for the uninitiated mainstream listener "I Wanna Be Your Lover". To label them as disco then dis it as soulless just made the original poster sound ignorant.
