Thoughts on the Michael cd?

not sure if i missed the thread about it (the official MJ thread is 18 pages long now and quite convoluted) but the Michael album isn't that bad. several songs got caught in my head right away. if i had to suggest singles i'd go with

Behind the Mask (for me its the most infectious groove on the album)

Hollywood Tonight (if Mike were here, i could see a vid with a supermodel on this)

Hold My Hand (ppl have come to expect the "change the world" type ballads by now and its not bad actually)

Another Day (the requisite "rocker" with Lenny instead of Slash, it could work)

I just got it for my B'day and I am not impressed. I love Mike's voice, the production is smaltzy and lame. Why didn't they hire a real band to play on some of the songs. Get Quincy to make real arrangements? Really, its a dissappointment his vocals are always great. It totally feels like Michael was not there to direct the production. sad

Please guys...stick to the MJ thread. This will just get locked.

And as far as the album goes, yeah, it's pretty tight (considering the fake tracks, but alas, I'm digressing). But c'mon..don't be scared. The MJ thread is for everybody smile

It's a typical MJ cd! I love it! I don't understand Monster right now but at least about 6 of the 10 songs on there jams and I understand them being in the cd although there's two songs that mention Hollywood and not understandable to put them both on a cd but never the less.... My favorites are Best of Joy and The way you love me <--- love love love this song right here!

for those who say "go to the MJ sticky", have you looked in there lately?

i wanted to see what people thought of the songs, see if there was some

info on the actual songs, you know, lol.

but that thread always derails into discussions about anything but music.

very treu, the sticky isn't much fun. Very hard to follow a discussion in there.

As for the album, it doesn't do anything for me. I'm never too crazy about new albums of people who passed away. The person didn't have the last hand in it and that's excately what's missing on this album. It has no spirit.

It's missing mj's magic finishing touches, but it's not bothering me. I like the album a lot and have it on regular rotation. My top 5 are

Behind the Mask

Much Too Soon

Monster

Hold My Hand

Hollywood Tonight

I never understand why people clutter up a sticky with a bunch of pointless, giant pictures. Print it out and stick it on your Trapper Keeper or something, if you must gaze at it constantly and share it with others. Leave a sticky to discussion and stop trying to make it difficult to navigate. confused

I love the Michael CD. Finally we have new music from MJ and as far as I'm concerned, all of the tracks are ALL Michael, no fakes, imposters or Jason Malachi on any of them! hmph! My favorite song is Another Day. Behind the Mask is starting to grow on me, I didnt care for it at first. I think what I dont like about it is the fake live audience that was added to it. It really doesnt add anything to the song and I wish it wasnt included in it. But I find myself liking Greg Phillinganes version better.

I actually made my own 2-disc Deluxe Edition set of Michael and included some other unreleased songs that should have been on the cd but werent.

Disc 1
1. Hotstreet
2. Hollywood Tonite
3. Do You Know Where Your Children Are?
4. Keep Your Head Up
5. (I Like) The Way You Love Me
6. Best of Joy
7. Xscape
8. Breaking News
9. Monster
10. Blue Gangsta
11. (I Cant Make It) Another Day
12. If You Don't Love Me
13. Slave To The Rhythm
14. Behind the Mask
15. Much Too Soon
16. Love Never Felt So Good
17. Hold My Hand
Disc 2
1. Hold My Hand (Leaked in '08 version)
2. Hold My Hand (Alternate Mix)
3. Breaking News (Stilez Remix)
4. Got the Hots
5. The Man (Duet w/Paul McCartney)
6. (I Can't Make It) Another Day (Leaked in '09 version)
7. All I Need
8. The Way You Love Me (2004 version)
9. No Friend of Mine (2007 Remix ft. Pras & Tempamental)
10. Behind the Mask (Greg Phillinganes (MJ's former keyboardist) version)
11. Another Day (CEY Entertainment Remix)
12. Breaking News (Acapella)
13. Hold My Hand (Vocals & Orchestra Mix)
It rocks!

Pretty much. There's hardly any talk of the new album in there.

I'm glad you made this thread because I actually love the new album and would like to discuss it. It's a much better album then I expected it to be. Is it on the same level of "Off The Wall" or any of his other works? Of course not!

But it's not an awful album AT ALL. It's still better than most of what plays in the top 40 these days. I think aside from "Monster" and "Breaking News", both of which have some questionable vocals imo, it's a very solid album overall. If you listen to it with an open mind and not try to compare it to MJ's past work, you'll find that it is a decent album.

My favorite songs on the album are:

Behind The Mask (Just great, love the sax playing in the beginning and of course MJ's vocals are fantastic here as always. Good stuff)

Another Day (Nice collab w/Lenny K. Again, MJ's voice is the main reason why this song works, at least for me)

Hollywood Tonight (Awesome upbeat track)

The Way You Love Me (As others mentioned this was featured on the Ultimate Collection some years ago, but this version is a bit different. It's not as polished, but still great nonetheless).

Monster (Has a modern sound. You wont like this if you're not a fan of rap or overproduced songs, but although this track has some questionable vocals imo b/c I'm not sure if it's MJ singing the entire time, it's very catchy).

Much Too Soon (Sweet, sappy tune that's different to anything else on the album. Great way to close the album)

-I'm very happy with the album overall. I'm glad I didn't get caught up in the negativity and decided to buy it. It's a nice addition to add to my MJ collection.

man, i can't stop listening to Breaking News, Behind the Mask and Hollywood Tonight. i think the album could've been a big hit if he were still here and done vids for these tracks and a couple others. mike would always "do it big". power pop!

Not crazy about it. And I can't help but wondering on every song I listen to on the CD: "Is this the way Michael would have released it?". So it doesn't feel like I will ever be able to accept it as I would have if Michael were out promoting it himself.

No, Michael is gone. And the albums that he released while living will most likely be the tunes I'll choose to groove to from this point on out.

I bought this CD as a Christmas gift for my 15-year old nephew and I'm sure he will like it,but I'm not impressed with the songs that I have heard so far shrug I don't like those 'modern' Teddy Riley beats.I'd rather just listen to old outtakes from the past.

Monster, Breaking News and KYHU are fake and I'm disgusted that his estate have released three blatantly fake songs on an official release.

I like the rest of it. Hollywood Tonight in particular is a great song. I'm a sucker for MJ's beatboxing.

my fav track is probably "behind the mask", i listen to that all the time. vintage michael.

slightly annoyed by the robotic voice in the bg tho, they sound out of place.

rest of the album is a little bit boring to me. some great moments but it lacks something.

Keep Your Head Up is actually a descent song and would be killer with Mike on it, the other 2 are just nasty, even if Mike was on those they'd still be awful, but then he wouldn't have released them because they are so bad biggrin

If he loves HIStory he'll love Michael. 8 of the 10 tracks are good (the 2 that are not good, Breaking News and Monster are 2 of the 3 fake tracks, Keep Your Head Up i quite like)
